THE MANDALORIAN: Giancarlo Esposito Says Season 2 Will Delve Into Moff Gideon And The Darksaber's Past

Season two of The Mandalorian is set to premiere on Disney+ this October, and star Giancarlo Esposito has now dropped some big hints about how the series will tackle Moff Gideon and the Darksaber's past.

In one of the best cliffhangers in recent memory, the first season of The Mandalorian ended with Moff Gideon emerging from his downed TIE Fighter with the Darksaber in hand. Fans of the Star Wars franchise immediately wanted to know how the villain got his hand on that blade, and what it might meant for the future of this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Well, it appears as if answers are indeed coming in season two as actor Giancarlo Esposito has confirmed in an interview with Deadline that both Gideon and the weapon's history will be touched on.

"You'll see more of the Darksaber, you'll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world," Esposito revealed after receiving his Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for the Disney+ series. "Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It's a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later."

"(The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon's past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together," he concluded.

The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels often featured the Darksaber, and when we last saw it, it was in the hands of Bo-Katan Kryze (who is expected make her live-action debut in season two of The Mandalorian). There are definitely some gaps to fill in, and it's looking like this show will address them based on these comments from Esposito.

Are you guys excited for The Mandalorian's return?

Wonder how long Bo Katan's reign was, cause yeah if he has the darthsaber, guessing she is dead, and pretty sure this takes place a lot closer to Return Of The Jedi than Force Awakens

I really hope we get to see a fight between Bo-Katan and Gideon. Really wanna see some live-action Mandalorian fighting, and this seems like the perfect opportunity

I bet we get a cameo from Clone Wars Jedi. I know Ashoka is showing up but I’d pass out if we saw Ewan and Hayden for a cameo as well.

I love how enthusiastic Esposito is about pop-culture. He's completely unafraid to just nerd out about Star Wars and the Darksaber and all sorts of things. It's quite a change from the more stoic, mercenary actors who play these kind of roles.

Actually, that's really something I've enjoyed about all the behind the scenes on The Mandalorian with the actors. Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito - they all seem to love it so much. Compare that with the more unenthused sequel cast as that trilogy went on...

@ProfessorFate -
One of the things that was clear with the most recent slate of SW films is that the people involved, the directors especially, just didn't understand what made SW special. I think, and it has been stated pretty clearly, is that The Mandalorian is SW school and all the directors and most of the actors are SW fans and nerds at heart. That was prerequisite #1. They are going to grow the future of SW from those people, like Taika who got a feature film out of it.

This makes me consider more seriously to binge The Clone Wars because I know there is a meaty amount of info and history about the Darksaber.

I am also interested in what Giancarlo Esposito does with this character.
