CD Projekt Red, the video game developers behind The Witcher franchise, has confirmed (via SFFGazette.com) that they're collaborating with Anonymous Content to produce a live-action project set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077.
The media company is responsible for Emmy-winning series such as True Detective and Mr. Robot, as well as Academy Award-winning films including The Revenant and Spotlight. That immediately gives the project some credibility, though before you get too excited, it's only "at an early development stage" right now.
In fact, the hunt for a screenwriter has just started, and while that means plot details are non-existent at this stage, CD Projekt Red has confirmed this movie or TV show will be "a brand-new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077."
The developers are working directly with Anonymous Content Studios' Head of Television Garret Kemble, Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, and Chief Creative Officer David Levine. The latter counts True Detective, Westworld, True Blood, and Game of Thrones among his credits after an executive role at HBO.
Garrett Kemble, David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, and Bard Dorros will produce on behalf of Anonymous Content alongside Charlie Scully. Anonymous Content's AC Studios will serve as the studio on the project which will be developed in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team.
After numerous delays, Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released on consoles and PC in what proved to be a glitch-ridden, largely unfinished state. The visuals didn't live up to what was promised and the backlash was immense. Since then, however, improvements have been made and its popularity has only increased.
For example, CD Projekt Red recently released spy-thriller expansion Phantom Liberty, which starred actors Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba respectively. Will the former reprise his role as Johnny Silverhand in this movie or TV show? The majority of fans certainly hope so and we're hearing the idea has been considered in the past.
Netflix has previously released an anime series based on Cyberpunk 2077 titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. It's unclear whether the streaming platform will be involved with this adaptation, though they do currently hold the rights to The Witcher.
