THE LAST OF US: Ellie & Riley Take Center Stage In The New Promo For Episode 7: "Left Behind"

It looks like next week's installment of The Last of Us is going to explore the "Left Behind" DLC, which will, of course, shine a spotlight on Ellie's backstory and her relationship with Riley.

The Last of Us continued tonight, picking up the story three months after the events of last week's heartbreaking installment and we saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) finally make their way to Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel was able to reunite with his younger brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and learn more about what he's been up to.

While there was plenty of tension throughout the hour, with Joel struggling with a myriad of things, namely his surrogate father/daughter relationship with Ellie as well as Tommy's new perspective on life, the hour did ultimately see the pair continue their journey as a unit.

Unfortunately, however, they quickly ran into trouble and the episode ended on a major cliffhanger - slightly changed from the game - that saw Joel seriously injured and Ellie struggling to keep him alive. We won't spoil what happens next, but it looks like Ellie will take center stage next week as we learn more about her backstory.

Check out the new preview for season one, episode seven, titled "Left Behind," below:

Plus, check out the featurette for episode six:

The Last of Us features Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, Elaine Miles as Florence, and Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

THE LAST OF US story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Not sure how to feel about Ellie always having anger issues when the games implied that was Joel's influence, but after last night episode, they earned a vote of trust, definitely the best episode so far, it even improved the game.

Travels across country during the zombie apocalypse to find/save his family… instead finds out his brother just gave up on communication. Sounds like present day apocalypse.

Performances are great by all the actors, really like the look of the show, but it's just "slow" to me. I guess I was expecting more action, and I have not played the game so no reference there, but I dunno I'm a bit let down by it so far.
MyCoolYoung

@SouthernNeo - it is a little slow, but I did like this episode overall. The game isn't action-packed either. Though they did remove one of the more action-packed chapters in episode 3. Bill's town was loads of fun in the game.

The game prioritized Ellie and Joel's journey over action and it works in the game. As someone who loved the game, I don't see the big fuss over the show. I liked episodes 1 and 6 and thought episode 5 was outstanding. 2,3, and 4 were boring and felt like filler.

It feels like it's fishing for awards to me

@MyCoolYoung - That’s exactly what it’s doing. The game had a tight script and every moment spent, even in gameplay, is designed to endear you towards the main characters. This show plays way too much.

bkmeijer1 - 2/20/2023, 4:17 PM
@MyCoolYoung - it's definitely prioritizing their journey.

Bill's Town, Tommy's Dam, and the University were all gameplay heavy chapters, so I like how they adapt those chapters in the show. I expect to see the Lakeview Resort to be very limited as well.

Maybe they're laying it too thick on the journey? I don't know. But I do know that you got our last week's bet right, so internet fame goes to you.

@bkmeijer1 - ayyy I'm internet famous. I love it.

I would've rather had more Ellie and Joel in episode 3, especially how gameplay-heavy bill's town was, but also Bill and Ellie's interactions.

I see lakeside resort as being the most action of the season. Not episode 7. I think that's going to be like Bill's town, where most are flash back and a few things in the present. Of course, David shows up towards the end which sets up the action. Similar to episodes 4 to 5.

@Kurban - I agree. I'm not locked into the show like I was in the game. Even with the obvious fishing for awards, I just feel like they took away the most interesting parts of the game thus far. I felt like in the game everyone lived in a sort of grey area other than maybe David, nobody felt like the bad guy.

At the end of the game, I was emotionally devasted because I felt like we were the bad guys, but I don't feel that way at all right now and it's not interesting

bkmeijer1 - 2/20/2023, 5:58 PM
@MyCoolYoung - yeah, that could be the case as well.

Left Behind and the Resort chapter tie nicely together in the game, so it would be a missed opportunity to skip that in the show.

The last two chapters can easily be merged into one episode though. Only action it needs is the escape from the hospital.

@MyCoolYoung - and also, I agree with the show making it feel less so that our protagonists come across as bad guys.

The show did humanize the KC mob, but I think that doesn't help. The show tries to put everyone in a grey area now. Except for Joel, but that might also be because we don't see him mowing dozens of other humans.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 2/20/2023, 6:06 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I wonder how much action the hospital scene will actually be. Ror said they changed the ending a tad. I think they're going to want that to be smaller and more intimate(even though I don't think it needs to be) to maximize it's emotional stakes.

From the trailer, we already see some action from David and his men
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/20/2023, 6:24 PM
@MyCoolYoung - don't think it needs to smaller either. But I can see them skipping over the big shoot out. Only moment it really needs is killing the doctor.

I'd be lying though if I think it would be more impactful to see Joel kill lots of people. So far we only heard about that, and haven't really seen it.
MyCoolYoung

@bkmeijer1 -

The KC Mob kinda lived in that grey area, but they were kinda tricky. It's like they were on their way to being there, but we just saw an uprising.

Yes, parading dead bodies in the street is a tad much(how am I even going to defend this lol), but Fedra was raping and murdering innocent people for 20-plus years what else did we expect? They fought back an organization that was undoubtedly evil. By saying Fedra was doing dirt absolves them of their grey, because how long should innocent people take that? They officially made them a villain by making them do murderous things. They should've kept both in the grey. Both just doing what they thought was best and it would've been more impactful. Though that's a nitpick to an amazing episode 5

We haven't seen much from the firefly so we don't know how grey they are.

No grey from Tommy and his people, but if I'm not mistaken they always resided in a neutral area where they just were like don't bother us we won't bother you.

I did like what they did with Henry. They put some grey in his area by giving up the resistance leader. That's what the game was all about to me. Everyone did what they could to survive even if it meant taking a life.

Since we haven't seen Joel maul through a bunch of people and we've gotten confirmation he's old and slow, I can't see him doing it to a trained organization. Maybe they can say Ellie was an adrenaline boost for him or something, but it seems cheap.

I think it's going to be a sneak mission, shooting the doctors, Marlene sneaking up.

bkmeijer1 - 2/21/2023, 3:45 AM
@MyCoolYoung - Tommy summarised it pretty well: having a nad reputation doesn't mean your bad. Think that goes for a lot of characters in this show.

But yeah, a sneak mission makes sense. Unless they make the Fireflies much smaller in numbers. That wouldn't surprise me either.

The best show on TV right now🥲

@drtraggerr

We were both kinda dumping on the shows cheap looking nature but for me the show has improved significantly since the first few episodes for me. How about for you, sweetheart?🙆

Possibly my favorite episode. So many little nods to the games, and Pascal giving the performance that should secure him an Emmy.

Great episode. Really loving the show. I feel like there's not a lot of infected battles because it makes it more effective when they do actually face them. Anyway can't wait too see the rest of the game play out in live action. Is really been great so far.

Wonder how much is gonna be from Left Behind and how much from Lakeview Resort.

The Lakeview Resort chapter was pretty gameplay heavy, so I expect that to be limited just like the University chapter was to just a short bit in this week's episode as well.
