THE LAST OF US: Joel & Ellie Make It To The Hospital In New Promo For The Season Finale: "Look for the Light"

Next week, in the season finale of The Last of Us, it's time to finish what we started as Joel and Ellie finally make it to the hospital where danger awaits and a major decision must be made...

Following arguably one of the show's most harrowing hours, The Last of Us returns next week for the final episode of its freshman season and, if you're familiar with the game, then you should be well aware that it will likely be the show's most intense and potentially devastating hour yet.

Before we get to that, let's quickly recap this week's episode as Ellie (Bella Ramsey) continued to care for Joel (Pedro Pascal) in his weakened state. But, things take a turn when a quick hunting trip results in her crossing paths with a pair of strange men David (Scott Shepherd) and James (Troy Baker) from a nearby community.

She does manage to initially get the upper hand and secure some penicillin, but when she discovers their connection to the men they encountered at the college, she makes her escape and goes to treat Joel and hopefully get him back on his feet before they come searching. While her efforts show promise by morning, she does run out of time and must create a diversion to keep David and his survivors away from Joel, so she makes a break for it on horseback.

Unfortunately, she does get captured and ultimately learns David's deep dark secret - that he's been feeding human meat to his colony, a racket he hopes to bring her in on as his teenage bride. Yeah, he's a sick man and Ellie suddenly finds herself in a whole world of danger.

Elsewhere, David's minions continue to search for Joel and when it seems like all hope is lost, he strikes and takes out the other three men, but not before torturing them for intel on Ellie's whereabouts. With the info in hand, he rushes to save her... but, he's too late.

Ellie manages to break free by taking out James first before doing her best to evade David, as the cafeteria burns, and finally making a critical strike - or well, several critical strikes - to take him out once and for all. She then walks out of the cafeteria and nearly breaks down before Joel finally finds her and calms her down. They walk off and now, we're in the endgame.

Check out the new preview for the season one finale, titled "Look for the Light," below:

Plus, check out the featurette for episode eight:

The Last of Us features Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, Elaine Miles as Florence, and Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

THE LAST OF US story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

@regularmovieguy - one of the best of the season for sure.

Great Freakin episode! Even though I know how it all turns out, this show still has me glued to my seat.

It was a little rushed but man did that guy capture the creepy, pedophiliac undertones of David really well. They really gave David and Bella a chance to really act and shine

MyCoolYoung - 3/6/2023, 11:30 AM
@bkmeijer1 have you seen it yet?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/6/2023, 11:42 AM
@MyCoolYoung - not yet. I'll give it a go in a few hours. I'll probably come back to this thread then, since it's the only TLOU article anyway
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/6/2023, 11:58 AM
@bkmeijer1 - yes we only get Like one or 2 week. Let me know what you thought
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/6/2023, 5:19 PM
@MyCoolYoung - yeah. Kinda expected discussion articles as well.

Anyway, it did get around to it. And I gotta say, it was an okay episode. David was still terrifying, but the ending just didn't feel as satisfying as in the game. Think it may be because we didn't spent that much time with him.

The episode is basically the same as the chapter, but without the combat. And even though it's just combat, it did give me more time in the game to properly develop a much stronger aversion to David.

MyCoolYoung - 3/6/2023, 5:45 PM
@bkmeijer1 - exactly my thoughts. I don’t know why they didn’t make this one longer and it seems they want to get away from Joel being a one man wrecking crew, which I get for grounding purposes, but it makes some portions feel incomplete.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/6/2023, 6:44 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Yeah, some episodes feel rushed, this series needed 10 episodes, and not waste one with that pointless Kathleen side story.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/6/2023, 9:26 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I get what they were going for with Kathleen, but that actress just didn’t do it for me like at all. You’re right though, that time could’ve been spent fleshing out Joel and Ellie more.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/7/2023, 3:43 AM
@MyCoolYoung - true. Kinda miss that one man wrecking crew part. In the game that really made me feel like he'd really do anything to protect Ellie. In the show we're just told four episodes in a row he is one
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/7/2023, 12:01 PM
@bkmeijer1 - then he told us he wasn’t in episode 6 lol I guess he can’t really protect Ellie
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/7/2023, 12:08 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I get why they’ve eliminated herds of zombies and hunters. It’s for more intimate settings and moments, but I feel like it lessened their journey. We’ve been told plenty of times why Joel was the man for the job and how treacherous this journey was , but an all honesty this Joel wouldn’t of made it without Ellie. She had to shoot the guy in episode 4, she had to tell him the guy was coming to stab him in episode 6, she got the medicine and stitched him up in 8, she took watch. Shit ,who’s really the protector here. We’ve had no real protector feats from Joel other than that fedra dude
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/7/2023, 2:27 PM
@MyCoolYoung - that's a really good point. Guess they more a team than anything.

Also, I feel the hordes of zombies and hunters in the game gave me more of the idea Joel was the protector. As he was the guy with the gun doing all the hard work.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/7/2023, 8:29 PM
@bkmeijer1 - they did. Taking them away kinda leaves Joel as just a man. I don't want to be too dramatic here, but them making it on this journey doesn't feel "special". It kinda feels like luck they haven't run into more danger
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 3:39 AM
@MyCoolYoung - exactly.

Don't know if you finished The Peripheral so I will say it without spoilers, because I think that show did the protector angle better.

It has only a few threats along the way, but it is very clear what Flynne and Burton relationship is and how that changes under the circumstances thrown at them.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/8/2023, 1:25 PM
@bkmeijer1 - not yet. Finishing this weekend for sure. I have to wait until the wife sleeps to watch lol
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 2:29 PM
@MyCoolYoung - wait, didn't you say you planned to watch it with your wife?

Anyway, I think it's already pretty clear from the first few episodes what that relationship is and what trajectory it is set.

It's kinda too with Joel & Ellie, but that's more said than shown.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/8/2023, 3:09 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I was supposed to but I started to watch without her. She’s so weird with the way she watched things and when I’d watch stuff 6 months late messing with her.

I think that’s my biggest gripe with the last of us, there’s more telling about Joel and Ellie than seeing. I remember by like episode 4 watching the after episode stuff, they were saying Joel loved Ellie at this point, and I just couldn’t help but think why?

Episode 3 was completely away from them and episode 2 they just got started. Maybe this season shouldn’t have completed the whole first game or they should’ve added that 10th episode and expanded some other ones.

But I’m in the minority with what I think of the show anyway so maybe I’m wrong. My friend, who hasn’t played the game, said the show has been a little boring for him and he prefers the walking dead
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/8/2023, 5:26 PM
@MyCoolYoung - agreed, it's definitely more tell than show. And when it shows something, I feel it adds little.

Like Ellie having that Riley flashback to show she doesn't want that one special person in life to die. But at that point, I feel we already know Ellie loves Joel and so her hesitating feels out of place.

Anyway, think we're in the minority. My dad's undecided. He's a few episodes in and thinks its just them getting from A to B to get told the something and nothing more.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/8/2023, 6:40 PM
@bkmeijer1 - wow I typed a really long one and it didn’t post. I can’t remember everything I said smh

It don’t feel like the left behind episode needed to happen at episode 7 period. We’ve had multiple things kind of completely halt everything. I do think Ellie needed her origin just as Joel did with his.

The tree I will always die on, especially with how the show has gone, is bill and frank did not need an episode.

I feel like the show would’ve benefited from bill and Frank’s story playing out exactly how it did in the game and I really feel like they changed it for award season and not for story purposes because it moved nothing forward, while also stopping everything. You could take that whole episode out and almost nothing would change other than them getting the battery.

Bill and frank could’ve mirrored Ellie and Riley or dark mirror rather. Their journey would’ve had her thinking of Riley even more and it could’ve led into her and Riley.

Another issue is we got A LOT of cordyceps set up and backstory and it’s really led to nothing. Zombies have been an afterthought in this show. Since the uprising we’ve gotten what ? 1?

No hive awakenings. The bloater was 5 seconds.

I wonder if they’re going to try to bring everything full circle with the last episode which would mean a lot needs to be covered. We’re getting the Ellie and her mom flashback, probably some Joel and Sarah, probably some Ellie and Riley, plus the hospital scene and whatever else they try to fit in there.

bkmeijer1 - 3/9/2023, 3:49 AM
@MyCoolYoung - although episode 3 is one of my favorite episodes because it dared to diverge from the game so much, I agree it was too long.

Think they could've had the Bill & Frank stuff play out while Joel & Ellie were there, and it's Joel's presence in Ellie's life that makes Bill realize he wants to die with Frank.

That or have the flashback play at the same time as Ellie & Riley's, since kinda follow the same storybeats and happen at roughly the sae time.

But yeah, I'm no showrunner too so maybe I get it totally wrong.

Most of it was good, but like with the rest of the show, it was very rushed. The ending absolutely sucked, though. In the game you make your way through, killing all of the pedos goons along the way. But in this Joel only killed a couple. What about all the other people in the group? Surely they’d hear the commotion and come to see what was up. It seems like they can’t get through the first game fast enough, so they can focus on having a show about strong women.

@PatientXero - if you want the game, go play the game.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/6/2023, 11:30 AM
@PatientXero - I was with you until your ending. Not sure they want to get to the next season because of strong women, especially considering Ellie just killed 2 men on her own.

I do agree someone should've seen the smoke at the very least. Maybe they only had 5 men. I don't know
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/6/2023, 6:48 PM
@PatientXero - You wanna control Pedro Pascal with the remote?
Lol, while this series is pretty good, it's a great example about how some stories can be told only in gaming format, for example, I still don't feel attachment with this Ellie, because we are not spending 20 hours having to protect her...reason why I also think Joel taking golf leasons next season won't have the same impact.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/9/2023, 9:51 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - late reply but I feel like they took most of the protection out and that was the problem. You can read my comment just above for my full thoughts but they took most of the zombies and the hunters out of the show which made it less of a perilous journey. It made the journey easier and some unnecessary moments fleshing out side characters
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/9/2023, 10:05 AM
@MyCoolYoung - While I agree (as others said, this world doesnt feel dangerous), I think even if they showed Joel protecting Ellie all the time, it wouldnt have worked as well *we* having to protect her.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/9/2023, 10:12 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I kinda think the protection was important. Often times that was how you saw Joel’s feelings towards Ellie. In the beginning, she was just cargo. by the end, it was similar to the latest episode.

We’re at the finale and I still don’t think we spent enough time with them as a whole. It’s not just Ellie for me, I don’t have an attachment to none of these characters and I’m sure I won’t be devastated Sunday, like I was in the game.

Granted, I know I’ve seen the ending via the game. It could still resonate and if it was done correctly
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/9/2023, 10:59 AM
@MyCoolYoung - I seriously dont see this man dooming the entire human race over this girl, the series didnt spent enough time developing their relationship...also, I dont think Pedro and Bella have that much chemistry, in fact, I think Bella was casted with season 2 in mind more than season 1.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/9/2023, 5:46 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I can’t lie, I liked them. I just don’t feel like we got that much of them. The way their relationship turned from you’re just cargo to I love you came out of no where. I guess those dark mirrors were enough for them to realize they need each other I guess
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 3/9/2023, 6:01 PM
@MyCoolYoung - I like them too, but I dont see the dynamic working.
I hope they know what they are doing with Dina's casting.
