THE LEGEND OF ZELDA CG Animated Concept Reel

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA CG Animated Concept Reel

In 2007, Imagi Studios (TMNT, Astro Boy) created a concept reel to pitch a cg animated Legend of Zelda film to Nintendo. The project died in development but the pitch reel has finally surfaced for Zelda fans to watch and comment upon.

Legend-of-Zelda-cg-TMNT

Check out this Legend of Zelda cg fan film teaser from Hong Kong animation studio, Imagi Studios. They’re also the animators behind the 2007 cg animated film TMNT and 2009′s cg Astro Boy feature. Back in 2007, the studio produced a high end concept reel to pitch to Nintendo how they would approach a Legend of Zelda animated film. Sadly, this project died in development and Imagi closed down in 2010 after the poor box office performance of Astro Boy and Warner Bros.’ cancellation of a then-in-development, cg Gatchaman film.

The brief teaser features Ganon, a fleeing Princess Zelda who looks to be trying to keep the Triforce out of Ganon’s reach. And of course Link. Link’s trusty steed Epona also features. Would you have been interested in seeing a Legend of Zelda cg film or would you be more interested in a live-action version? Some gamers believe that cg animated adaptations are the best way to approach video game films. There have been some great cg animated films (Final Fantasy: Advent Children) but there have been a few clunkers as well (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within).

The Legend of Zelda is an action-adventure video game series created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka in 1986 for Nintendo. To date, the franchise has sold over 67.93 million copies worldwide. Princess Zelda is named after American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda. In late Januray 2013, Nintendo announced that two new games are being planned for the Wii U, one a remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and an untitled, original entry.

I'm kind of glad it didn't come to fruition as a movie. Maybe a tv show, seeing as though it has visuals comparable to the Clone Wars.

the closest thing we'll ever get to a live action LoZ movie is that April Fools trailer IGN made a few years ago.

Well as me I am big Zelda fan, they really could do a LOTR style with Zelda. But we all know this will never happen, just like the Metroid movie that never happened as well.

I dot understand why they never made it into a anime tv series. I think that would be better then a movie.

It can have 200+ episodes. That would be cool.

I love the Zelda series, have played almost every game too and as a huge fan...a Zelda movie is a no-no. Want to enjoy Zelda stories without playing the games? Read the mangas made for Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and if possible get the Hyrule Historia and feast your eyes since the last 30 pages or so are the story of the first Link.

Awesomesauce.

LOTR style of Legend of Zelda would be cool but it will never happen and if it did then someone is bound to [frick] it up. I could see a succesful animated movie if done right.

That looked pretty awesome to me....Except yeah I gotta agree the character design for Gannondorf was terrible.
Was that even supposed to be Gannondorf?

But other than the one characters appearance it looked cool. Very Legend of Zelda.

A live action Zelda movie COULD work. It isn't overly unrealistic. Just slap some pointy ears on Link and there you go.

A Peter Jackson helmed live action Zelda movie would be interesting, as would a Pixar helmed animated film. Too bad neither of these things will probably happen, but I'd definitely go see them if they did. This trailer looked interesting, except for Gannondorf. I didn't even know that was Gannondorf when I watched it, it looked nothing like him. Anyway, one Nintendo property that I'd love to see a live action film of is Metroid. Cast Jennifer Lawrence as Samus maybe?

That was Ganon?!?!? Sorry but NO to an animated TV Series, Show, Anime whatever. A Live Action Legend Of Zelda Movie would be A LOT better, prefferably NOT by Disney, they've just turned overrated this days. Grab Peter Jackson based on his previous work especially LOTR, to direct this movie and release it in 2016 for the 30th Anniversary of the Zelda Franchise. Here's my fancast:

Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class, A Single Man) or William Moseley (Narnia) as Link

Jayne Wisener (Sweeney Todd) or AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia, Soul Surfer) as Zelda

Idris Elba (Prometheus, Pac Rim) or Gerard Butler (300, The Phantom of the Opera) as Ganondorf

Kristen Kreuk (Smallville, Edgemont) or Anne Hathaway (TDKR, Rio, Les Misarebles) as Navi

Liam Neeson (BB, Taken, Star Wars EP 1) or Sean Connery (James Bond) as The Hyrule King

Emma Stone (TASM, Easy A) or Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing, Die Hard 4) as Malon

I would rather have a live action Zelda film/TV series than animated. Seriously, Peter Jackson is the perfect choice. And now that I think of it. I got a Legend of Zelda vibe from his work on The Hobbit and I got a Lord of the Rings vibe from Twilight Princess. He would be perfect to helm a live action film. The only real problem is Link, he seems like such a hard character to develop without playing hours and hours and days and months of gameplay (seriously, these games are difficult as hell).

The problem with a live action Zelda is that we never see Link actually talk. That'd be weird.

So would link still be a silent protagonist? It wouldn't make sense for the main character to just not speak through the whole film, and he hasn't needed to talk for almost thirty years. We should probably keep it that way. TMNT was great, but I don't this would have worked. I'm not digging the Alucard-y Ganondorf.

JGAR - 8/5/2013, 11:33 AM
Link can say just like 3 words in an entire film and that's it. He's not really mute or can't talk, he is just the silent and quiet type.

@Charlie2094 You know what? I wouldn't really mind having a Zelda movie...but I think I would like to see an animation movie instead of a live action...and maybe an anime would be the way to go. One of the things I wouldn't want to have in a movie is Link uttering words..I mean,I know that doesn't make any sense but it's just part of his charm. Miyamoto has already stated that Link will probably never say a single word in a game...it is implied though cause most people you actually talk to in the games usually make comments on what Link supposedly just said...I don't know, if anything,I'd like to see an anime first and only THEN try to make it a live action movie...do I want to see a Zelda movie? Probably yes, but I think playing the games brings me satisfaction I need any ways.

Oh and a Metroid movie would have worked, and it probably would have made a great movie...too bad it didn't pan out.

This shit looks awesome. If any game can work as a movie it is Zelda. The reason I say this is because there is no definitive Zelda story. Each game your another times version of Link charged with rescuing Princess Zelda, and defeating tyhe great evil that took her, a lot of times with the help of the tri-force. So They could have good writers write a whole new story based on these and aren't tied down to any certain game narrative.

As a fan of Zelda since the 1st game, it looked pretty good. I hope to see live action flim(s) in my lifetime.
Make it a trilogy and use these game titles as a subtitle for each flim, not based off these games persay. Certian elements pulled from various games and original ideas.
TLoZ: A Link to the Past
TLoZ: Spirit Tracks or Oracle of Ages
TLoZ: Twilight Princess or The Master Sword(not a game)
Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro to direct.
I would think Link should talk too. It would be wierd for him not to. I wouldn't mind it.
