VIDEO GAMES: Concept Art Surfaces From EA's Cancelled Marvel Fighting Game

In the beginning of 2008, it was announced that video game maker Electronic Arts (EA) had cancelled an untitled fighting game they were developing based off Marvel-owned properties. Today, some concept art from that defunct partnership has surfaced online. Come take a look!

In 2004, Electronic Arts joined forces with Marvel with the intention of creating some exciting new fighting games based on their vast comic book universe. The first title from the ill-fated partnership was 2005's "Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects." When it was released it didn't fly off the shelves as the price of the game had to be cut by as much as 40 percent less than two months after its release.

After that, EA would take one more crack at a Marvel fighting game, but it was cancelled, and EA dissolved the partnership with Marvel. Now, new images have surfaced from that cancelled project, as the site Siliconera, has received new screenshots from an artist that worked at the EA Chicago studio. As you can see in the video and images below Captain America, Spiderman, and the Hulk would have been playable characters. Also, screenshots of the menu, which had comic book-like aesthetic, reveal the game controls and fighting modes; campaign mode, what if scenarios, and online play.

@SageMode: I had both the PSP and the PS2 versions (my damn ps2 daoesn't work anymore, i should fix it..). The psp version was slightly different, on the costumes were alternate versions of the comic costumes and there was a playable Captain America, Dr. Doom and Magneto (probably some more too, can't remember).

I actually really liked Rise of the Imperfects, just needed more characters, that's all that was holding it back, lack of characters.

ROTI was a pretty cool game. This one though, looks very crappy. Obviously, it wasn't a finished product. My favorite Marvel fighting game was a X-Men game on Sega Saturn system. I think it came out around 1995. Can't remember what it was called.

WOOOOW..OFF THE CHAIN I LOVE IT..PLEEEEASE MAKE THIS.. IT DOES REMIND ME OF RISE OF THE IMPERFECTS..I LOVE FIGHTING GAMES LIKE THIS WHERE U CAN INTERACT WITH THE BACKGROUNDS..I STILL PLAY RISE OF THE IMPERFECTS..REALLY SUPRISED THEY NEVER MADE ANOTHER ONE FOR PS3..EXCEPT LOOSE THE IMPERFECTS AND JUST MAKE IT ALL MARVEL CHARACTERS. ALSO THE WHOLE GETTING TIERD THING LOOSE THAT TOO. I HATE GAMES LIKE THAT ITS VIDEO GAME THAT SLOWS DOWN THE ACTION. I WOULD PAY WHATEVER FOR THIS..ALSO I WANNA LOT OF CHARACTERS TO CHOOSE FROM AND I WANT IT LIKE THE IMPERFECTS WHERE THEY FIGHT WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS OF THEIR REAL POWERS. LOVE IT. CHARACTERS SHOULD BE HULK, SPIDERMAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THOR, REED RICHARDS (SO U CAN KNOCK PEOPLE OUT FROM ACROSS THE SCREEN..LOL), STORM, WOLVERINE, THE INVISIBLE GIRL, HUMAN TORCH, MAGNETO, NAMOR, DAREDEVIL, IRONMAN, JUGGERNAUT, ELECTRO, THE ABOMINATION, HAWKEYE (WITH AN ARSENAL OF DIFFERENT ARROWS), THE VISION (IMAGINE PHASEING OUT SO PEOPLES WEAPONS COULDNT TOUCH YOU), SHE HULK, CYCLOPS, LOKI, GIANT MAN (HAVE HIM GROW AND SHRINK), THE BLACK PANTHER, LUKE CAGE, SABERTOOTH, GAMBIT, VENOM, CARNAGE, GREEN GOBLIN, ICEMAN, PUNISHER, DR DOOM, NIGHT CRAWLER(OF COURSE WITH THE ABILITY TO TELEPORT), THE ABSORBING MAN (HAVE HIM REALLY BE ABLE TO ABSORB WHAT HE TOUCHES) SANDMAN, ARCHANGEL (THE BADASS ONE WITH THE RAZOR WINGS) APOKALYPSE, THANOS, NOVA, SUPER SKRULL, ROUGE (REALLY MAKE HER ABSORB PEOPLES POWERS FOR LIKE A CERTAIN TIME LIMIT), MS MARVEL, DEADPOOL, THE THING, WAR MACHINE, CRIMSON DYNAMO, SILVER SURFER, GHOST RIDER, DR STRANGE AND THE MANDARIN. IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES..ID PLAY THIS SH@% TILL MY FINGERS FELL OFF..LOL. FIGHTING PEOPLE ONLINE AND WITH MY FRIENDS..MAKE IT SOOOOOO!!!!! OH ONE MORE THING COSTUME SELECTIONS LIKE STREET FIGHTER. YOU CAN CHOOSE THE GOLDEN AGE OR CLASSIC LOOK, THE ULTIMATES VERSION, THE LIVE ACTION MOVIE LOOK, OR THE MARVEL NOW VERSION..HIRE ME TO DO THIS IL HOOK IT UP FOR YAL.

@LEVITIKUZ: There was X-Men Legends 1 and 2, Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2, X-Men Destiny last year (Which i've heard it was pretty bad), Marvel vs Capcom, there will be Deadpool. Hulk Ultimate Destruction was my favourite, open world, basically Prototype with Hulk (always thought more than half of the moves sets and all were just grabbed from that by activision).

Darth258 - 12/19/2012, 6:26 PM
@LEVITIKUZ: Yeah, totally agree. I'm not a big MK fan, i tried MK vs DC from a friend, it was really cool, but the lack of characters and costumes didn't make it much worth for me to buy it back then. I'll see how Injustice is.
Loved Lego Batman 2, i miss the Batman theme so much lol.
Next of the Arkham series should feature the whole JLA, so there's some hope.

The menus and presentation look awesome, but I didn't get too excited over the gameplay. I wish they would do another game like this.

ROTI would've been better if all the playable characters were straight from the comics. Not some random characters created for the game.

I loved playing Spider-Man! I would web people by their feet and throw them across the stage. Especially the library stage. That was fun throwing people at bookshelves and on tables! Good times.

Rise of the Imperfects was awesome. The fighting engine was insane. With the Avengers hype now, maybe Marvel can make a sequel to it or something for next gen consoles.
