The Hollywood Reporter has learned that HBO has enlisted Kantemir Balagov, the Russian filmmaker behind the critically-acclaimed dramas Closeness and Beanpole, to direct the pilot episode for the hotly-awaited live-action The Last of Us series.

2x Primetime Emmy-winner Craig Mazin (ChernobylThe Hangover Part II; The Hangover Part III) and Naughty Dog co-president/creative director Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us; The Last of Us Part II) are writing and executive producing the upcoming series, with the first season presumably adapting the events of the first game.

Johan Renck, who helmed Chernobyl for Mazin, was originally set to direct but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. It's unknown at this time whether he'll return for a future installment.

The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed and centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for a deadly pandemic. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

I wonder who they’ve got cast as Joel and Ellie if they’re gearing up to start production soon.

Dylan McDermott in a perfect world for Joel.

Too bad Kaitlyn Dever is 24. She would’ve been perfect at Ellie. I hope Marvel or Lucasfilm snatch her up before she gets sucked into some DC bullshit with no guaranteed future. She’s too good to be wasted.

Hopefully they get someone like Jeffrey Dean Morgan for Joel and maybe Kiernan Shipka (Sabrina) for Ellie. I think she'd be good.

Always saw this as a Hugh Jackman, Ellen Paige movie but Jacman may not be down for it and not sure what is going on with paige but she isnt aging well. I would nominate Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for Joel.

Lol I'm probably the only cinephile here that watched Beanpole, truly magnificent film (it was like my fifth favorite movie of 2020).

I think he truly fits well with the last of us universe and if he puts more focus on character and emotion like he did in his fantastic film than that is just the perfect choice for the last of us.

I'm still pretty miffed that they're retelling the game's story, why not tell a new story in that universe?
