X-Men franchise star James McAvoy has addressed rumours he'll return as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, making it clear Charles Xavier isn't a role he particularly misses...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will bring Sir Patrick Stewart back as Professor X, and fans continue to theorise about the other big cameos we'll see. It wouldn't really make sense for James McAvoy to make an appearance as his younger Charles Xavier, though the hope is that this movie does something to set the stage for the X-Men's MCU debut.

During a recent Instagram Q&A, McAvoy was asked if he'll appear in the Doctor Strange sequel, and offered a blunt answer in response.

"No," the Scottish actor said of a possible return before doubling down by saying, "No, I don't think so" when asked if he misses playing Professor X in the X-Men movies. After the response to Dark Phoenix, we're not surprised by that reaction, and it sounds like this is a role he's moved on from.

McAvoy was great as the character, but with Stewart considered the truly iconic version (or should that be Variant?) of Charles, it does make more sense for him to take centre stage here. There's always a possibility Marvel Studios would turn to his successor to play the MCU's take on the leader of the X-Men, but we still have no clue how Kevin Feige plans to add mutants to the mix.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released in theaters on May 6!

@Typhoon20 - McAvoy was great - it’s the scripts that were shit outside of First Class and DOFP

I'm so sad that Dark Phoenix wasn't better. Apocalypse was a let down, but it opened the door for a live action animated series type movie

@TheMapleSyrup - Dark Phoenix was more tolerable than Apocalypse.

@TheMapleSyrup - Dark Phoenix > X Men The Last Stand and Apocalypse.

If Dark Phoenix had come out when it was suppose to and had a better marketing campaign it would have faired better.

I also imagine the third act they had to change was alot better. For directorial debut it wasn't bad and the score was dope.

It definitely wasn't the best Xmen but it isn't the worse, that's for sure.

@UniqNo - in my opinion it’s the second worst, topped of course by new mutants

@TheMapleSyrup - Okay but can we agree that the Hans Zimmer soundtrack for Jean was amazing?

@UniqNo - The Last Stand was made borderline watchable by First Class by adding a bit more to the lore with origin of Beast, but making Mystique a lead when she barely had any interaction with Xavier in the OT was just bizarre. They really tried to make JLaw a thing and for a while she was, until Weinstein was busted.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Personally I liked Apocalypse, that aside, can you say his performances were bad? not to mention previously he did First Class and Days of Future Past, two of the best X-Men Movies to date.

Patrick Stewart is an icon, but he is too old, and had the perfect send-off with Logan, I would've prefered McAvoy, plus, maybe he could've stayed.

It's okay if he doesnt want to come back, not everything is comic book movies and he has already done the experiencie so it's understandable that he's like to do other work, he was a good Xavier in two great movies and two Bad ones

It's really sad how that First Class series played out, the first movie was great even though it took a very loose approach toward adapting the X-Men lore, and then DOFP really stepped things up and was arguably the definitive Fox X-Men movie (not including spin offs).

Then Apocalypse dropped the ball in a really big way and after that Dark Phoenix was ignored by most while the ones who did watch it basically sat through a poorly written and underwhelming final installment in a dying franchise. It's so sad that the likes of McAvoy and Fassbinder, who were amazing in their roles, ended up fizzling out so unceremoniously.

I would so very much love McAvoy and Fassbender to have one more shot. Such a pity two amazing actors playing amazing roles were wasted on two mediocre movies. Honestly, not even just those two. There are a lot of great actors putting in great performances. Hoult and Turner especially. Just wasted by generic writing and lazy directing (or inexperienced directing in Dark Phoenix's case).
