Could Josh Trank Be In Line To Direct The X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel?

We had heard the Chronicle director was Fox's choice to helm the Fantastic Four reboot, but could they have him in mind to replace Mathew Vaughn on a sequel to First Class instead/also?

HeyUguys had a chat with the young director of found footage super-hero movie Chronicle, and as well as asking him some revealing questions about that movie, they inquired about the recent report that he was in line to direct a Fantastic Four reboot for Fox. But they also ask him about an X-Men movie. That is a new one for us, perhaps they were just testing the water, but either way Trank doesn't shoot it down..of course neither does he confirm anything! Here is an excerpt from the interview, in which Trank also gives his take on the proposed Akira remake and reveals his favorite superhero..

If there was a US version of Akira, Chronicle would be it – would you make one?

Josh Trank: After Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, I stopped judging remakes. Who knows?

Will you be doing Fantastic Four or X-Men?

Josh Trank: It’s a little weird, as I knew this movie would work, but it’s been surprising how everyone’s responded. I have been working on some original ideas and things are being talking about, but nothing’s a signed deal yet.

Who’s your favourite comic-book character?

Josh Trank: Batman – Frank Miller is my favourite writer as I grew up with the Tim Burton Batman.

Last word on a sequel to First Class was that a script was being worked on, the cast are all looking forward to returning, and previous director Mathew Vaughn has still not signed up. So it is entirely possible that Fox are looking at other options, even if this particular rumor has little weight aside from Trank not outright denying it. What do you guys think?

Click below for the full interview in which Trank discusses Chronicle, there are a few spoilers.

lmao. A movie he hasn't seen is shit, and he wants the director of some of the worst movies ever made for Batman. ..makes sense I guess.

i'd rather he did the fantastic four reboot,we need a decent fantastic four movie.

x-men first class 2,i'm not gonna be that intrested unless we get to see at least cyclops & marvel girl & a different villain i.e the sentinels.

I couldn't care less who directs the sequel to First Class. Vaughn did a good job with the little time he had but if it wasn't for Fassbender's Magneto/Bond scenes, the entire film would've seemed like a carbon copy of X3, with shittier mutants. If they just want to make average action flicks then i'd prefer them being about mutants i've enjoyed reading in my youth, such as X3's cast of x-men. X3 wasn't any better than G.I.Joe but at least i liked the characters on screen. First Class was a wasted opportunity to develop cool new mutants. All they did was a random selection in the mutant bin and then throw them in as cannon fodder with zero development. They killed their coolest mutant and did nothing with the next best two, Banshee and Havok. IMHO, the movie should've been X-men Origins: Charles and Erik, focussing much more screen time on both characters than what they had in First Class. So whoever directs a sequel to it definitely won't make me go to theaters. I'll just rent it.

I kind of have forgotten it, has Matthew Vaughn said that he won't be back for the First Class sequel? If so...then he's definitely not a bad choice. BUT, I'm okay if the sequel to it is scrapped in favor of the Fantastic Four reboot; I can see him doing the team good. :)

TRANK SHOULD DO FF WITH YVONNE STRAHOVSKI AS INVISIBLE WOMAN BRUCE WILLIS AS BEN GRIMM RYAN KWANTEN AS JOHNNY BLAZE AND UP IN THE AIR WITH REED.

I hate his movies, with a passion. He injects absolutely nothing into them except for his attempts at stylized action which is ripped off from better films anyway. All of the Underworld movies are horrible, and Die Hard 4 was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. ..I was exaggerating with the "worst ever made" sure, but by Jaysus they wouldn't be far off!

Maybe that is why he annoys me so much, cos I see potential. He can direct an action sequence no doubt..just whenever anyone opens their mouths I drift off. It might help if he didn't cast his cardboard Mrs. I'll give Total Recall a chance..but I don't have high hopes. Colin Farrel can be pretty good if he's working with a decent director, when he's not..ugh! The new Fright Night is really good by the way, check it out if you haven't already.

I enjoyed Rise of the Lycans better than the first two Underworld movies but that doesn't mean i didn't enjoy the Underworld movies though. I put Wisemen on the same "stylish but shallow" pile Paul W. Anderson's on. Both of their visual styles would be absolutely perfect for Batman but they just can't force the best out of their actors. It's as if they just don't care about the script as much as the storyboards. I think James McTeigue is the best choice for the next Batman reboot IMHO. He's as stylish as Wisemen and Anderson but actually makes his actors act their best. He was able to do something Branagh didn't. Make Natalie Portman shine. Yes she's a great actress but not in every film she's in. So guys like Aranofsky and McTeigue are very much the way to go for stylish yet brilliant comic book films.

Morty- I would agree with you if he didn't direct my favorite sci-fi/horror film ever, Event Horizon. Michael Bay has yet to make a favorite of mine and i'm not about to hold my breath until he does. I agree all three are on the same "stylish/shallow" pile but i'd place Anderson slightly above Bay and Wisemen. Bay has directed The Rock which i find as good as Underworld but neither are better than Event Horizon in my honest opinion.

Give Batman to James McTeigue. He's already a WB man. And has some decent movies under his belt. If this guy directs X-Men and it takes place in the 70s, I'm all for it.

Chronicle is getting some of the best reviews for any superhero flick of last year, so the GL comparison is way off.

McTeigue directed V For Vendetta. Whatever else he did (some of it was bad let's be honest), that is approaching a masterpiece imo so I'd be happy to hear he had the reigns of any other CBM.

Ror- Well i guess Ninja Assassin's on par with Underworld so i can see why you'd consider it bad. But "The Raven" is looking really [frick]ing good! And yeah, V was most definitely a perfect comic book film blueprint to follow :)

Eh, I would think X-Men would come before F4 with Fox.

I wouldn't mind this new guy.

When must F4 start production before the rights revert?

Morty- "If you give the worst ball player in the league enough goes at bat he will hit a home run once and a while... right ?"

Yeah... i got nothin' on that. That is a good point, i'll give you that. Either way, as cool as the visuals would be for a Anderson/Wisemen/Bay Batman film, i don't want either of them to ever be considered for it.

Vaughn isn't going to make this with Bryan Singer lingering over him when he could have an Oscar potentially on his hands with Superior. Whoever directs this movie will be working under singer. That being said with Josh Trank's newbie status as a director and accomplishments so far (even at Grif's dismay) he sits as a perfect candidate.
