You may not realise this but long before filmmaker Michael Dougherty took the helm of
Godzilla: King of the Monsters, he worked on the scripts for both
X2 and
Superman Returns along with
X-Men: Apocalypse's story. When I recently had the opportunity to talk with him about the
Godzilla sequel, I had to ask whether he would be interested in contributing to Marvel Studios' reboot.
"No...not really!" he said when asked about potentially being involved with a fresh take on the characters.
"I love them but I think I've graduated from the Xavier School for The Gifted! [Laughs] I would much rather see them placed into the hands of fresh filmmakers."
That's fair enough but does that mean he's not interested in superhero movies, period?
Well, while Dougherty is clearly a fan of what Marvel and DC are doing these days, it doesn't really sound like there's any one character he's gravitating towards.
"I don't know," the director admitted.
"I don't ever want to completely say 'no' but, again, I've played in that arena so much, it does for me personally feel a bit like I've been there and done that."
"I love watching them and I'm really enjoying the way the genre has evolved into its own genre because I feel like they're only getting better with time but I can't name one particular superhero that's left to interpret that I would want to put all my blood, sweat and tears into."
That's a shame but if he's not passionate about the comic book universes currently dominating theaters, then it makes sense that he doesn't want to get involved with it again.
