X-MEN '97 Finale Recap: An Epic Final Battle, More Twists, And An Unmissable Post-Credits Scene - SPOILERS

The X-Men '97 finale arrived on Disney+ earlier today and, well, what an episode. Along with an epic final battle, we got a huge cliffhanger ending and a must-see post-credits scene. Here's our full recap!

This article was originally published on Toonado.com - head there now for all the latest on X-Men '97!

Following the shocking events of last week's episode, the X-Men '97 finale - "Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 3" - begins with a visit to the past and the moment Charles Xavier told his friend, Magnus, that he was a mutant.

We soon learn this is all in Magneto's head, with Professor X using his immense psychic abilities to force his friend-turned-foe to undo the damage he's inflicted upon the Earth. He succeeds, but Bastion is far from done and still has an army of Prime Sentinels on hand.

Just as the villain is about to kill Cable, Jean Grey returns as the Phoenix (briefly) to deal with him and leaves Mister Sinister a husk of his normal self. However, Bastion takes advantage of the distraction to take the Techno-Organic Virus from Nathan and transforms into his ultimate form.

On Asteroid M, Wolverine remains unconscious, leaving the remaining X-Men to fend off Bastion's attack (the team on Earth eventually shows up in a modified Sentinel).

It's a brutal battle, but Cyclops orders the team to stop fighting and offers Bastion their help. He refuses and when Earth's leaders unleash the "Magneto Protocols" missiles on the base, he seemingly allows himself to be destroyed rather than stand alongside the X-Men as a mutant.

While all this is happening, Charles manages to get through to Magnus and, just as it looks like the heroes will die stopping the asteroid from hitting Earth, the Master of Magnetism awakens and stops it...only for that and the mutants to suddenly vanish!

Six months later, the X-Men are still missing, presumed dead. A heartbroken Forge has tried and failed to assemble a new team and is suddenly met by Bishop who reveals that they're still alive...someone just sent them hurtling through time, and it's down to these two to find them.

In Egypt, 3000 B.C., Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Beast encounter a young En Sabah Nur. Meanwhile, in the future 3960 A.D., Scott Summers and Jean are confronted by Clan Askani and their son, a young Nathan Summers. Unfortunately, there's no mention of Wolverine, Storm, Morph, Jubilee, and Sunspot, and the episode ends with "To Be Continued..."

A mid-credits scene takes us to the present day and sees Apocalypse walk through the ruins of Genosha. He pulls a charred playing card from the rubble and says, "So much pain, my children. So much death," with the implication being that Gambit will be resurrected as Death, a member of his Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!

That lines up with the comics and it's fair to say season 2 can't get here soon enough...

Dude, I read Age of Apocalypse 2 weeks ago, if you recall - then I said to my best friend: "I bet they'll remove Charles from the equation in the finale and then bring on Apocalypse to take over".

Oh, what a glorious day it is to be an X-Men fan. @DrReedRichards

I wonder if DeMayo is going to open up about what went on now.

Great finale though. Can't wait to see what goes on next between Magnus and En Sabar Nur

Well, I gave this show a really good try. But it didn't take at all.

However, I am always glad when CB related stuff comes along that makes people happy.

@bobevanz -

I just don't much like animated stuff other than the Disney classics, and with my Grandkids all grown up, I haven't watched any of that in years & probably never will again. None of the superhero Saturday morning cartoons existed yet when I was a kid in the 60s.

But yes, I still read and collect all the comics.

@DocSpock - ha. I was going to say maybe you're too young. But on the contrary you're actually too old to relate!
I believe you already shared with me so sorry I forgot

Yes I was born late 80s. So I grew up with xmen as a cartoon. It had a bigger impact on me than comics. So this show literally speaks to the child-me

He said he wasn't sure about the changes they made after his departure, could be the same thing or quite different, only time will tell.
Sabre81
Sabre81 - 5/15/2024, 1:08 PM
@Doomsday8888 - Ah, gotcha. Josh bombarded the site with so many articles about what DeMayo says on Twitter I stopped reading them lol Josh actually thinks journalism is simply writing what happens on the Twitter accounts of DeMayo, Gunn and his idiotic scoopers.

I'd say Marvel shouldn't make any changes to DeMayo's season 2 after the positive response to this season.

@Doomsday8888 - Hahaha, yes, we can never have nice things ;-)

Aye, we don't know what happened. Could be that he may not want to work there anymore. A lot of things seem to going haywire behind the scenes over the past while.

DeMayo will be back, he has more leverage than anyone at that company. What a fantastic finale! The biggest take away for me is that PETER AND MJ ARE BACK TOGETHER! He found her after all this time... now please give me one more season. This is beautiful, this sets the standard for Mutants in the MCU. I pray they don't [frick] it up

@bobevanz - well it was the possible end of the world from their view so not a jump for Peter to want to be with her, haha. But yeah. What a show. Awsome from start to end. So happy Cyclops has gotten the limelight and Wolverine got put on pause.

@GhostDog - yeah man, who would’ve think they’d bring DD out AND Cloak and Dagger. Marvel Animation is dipping toes for sure
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 5/15/2024, 10:22 AM
@GhostDog - Biggest takeaway from all of this is why we haven’t ever got one yet, and why we aren’t getting one now on top of what we’re already getting.

Spoil us, ffs 😫
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/15/2024, 10:27 AM
@FireandBlood - I would hope these cameos are also litmus test to see what characters have the appeal for more exploration in this universe. I do think they have a gold mine with expanding and continuing the 90s animated universe.

Can you imagine a DD show working its way through the comics the same way the X-Men show does!
ATrueHero1987
ATrueHero1987 - 5/15/2024, 10:30 AM
@GhostDog - I always wanted a street level team up animated show(DD, C&D, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and etc.)
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/15/2024, 10:37 AM
@ATrueHero1987 - same. Marvel Knights type of thing. I think they could do an street level Marvel 90s show.

The way this X-Men show has colored in the wider Marvel world by showing us these cameos and even factoring in Cap into the plot briefly, they can do the same with a NYC street marvel show.

@GhostDog - Of Daredevil’s two Marvel Animated Universe voices, Edward Albert’s unfortunately dead while Bill Smitrovich is still alive.

The Bastion stuff in the finale didn't work. The rest mostly did.

Far from perfect, but enjoyable.
