According to MTV, reports in September that the "30 Days of Night" sequel would begin filming in October appear to have been corroborated yesterday as filming kicked off in Vancouver.
Director Ben Ketai's follow-up to the 2007 adaptation of Steve Niles' IDW comic (directed by "Twilight Saga: Eclipse" director David Slade) seems to be proceeding on schedule with actress Kiele Sanchez as Stella Oleson instead of Melissa George.
"Not something I've seen spread around anywhere else yet, but the sequel to '30 Days of Night,' 'Dark Days,' began shooting in Vancouver today," IDW publisher Chris Ryall posted on his Twitter account.
Sanchez will be joined on set by newcomers Mia Kirshner, Rhys Coiro and Harold Perrineau. Coiro and Perrineau will unite with her character to track down the vampire queen Lilith who was responsible for the destruction of her Alaskan town in the first film.
Expected to be a direct-to-DVD release in light of its predecessor's low-performing $70 million at the box office, "30 Days of Night: Dark Days" may still keep a film franchise of "30 Days" adaptations alive, even without theater distribution. Sales numbers will most likely decide if that's a possibility.
In the meantime, Vancouver citizens should keep their eyes and camera's ready to see some vampires roaming their Canadian streets in the coming weeks.
Thanks to MTV for the info.
