Benedict Cumberbatch Set to Play the Villain in the 24th JAMES BOND Movie?

We're still roughly a month away from the release of Skyfall, but a recent report suggests that work on the next installment in the long-running franchise will begin next year, and that actor Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the main antagonist. Click for more details.

Following the report that actor Daniel Craig has signed on to star as 007 in two more James Bond movies, Express UK's Day & Night reckon he will be joined by Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), saying he has landed the role of the main antagonist in the planned 24th entry of the franchise.

"Benedict is considered perfect Bond villain material," the site reports. "Work on the next film will begin next year and the plan is for Benedict to be on board. He grew up watching Bond, so it would be a childhood ambition fulfilled. Playing a Bond villain is one of the plum roles in film history and he'd jump at the chance."

The actor has also once stated that he would jump at the chance of playing James Bond a few months back, and while no official confirmation has been issued by the studio regarding this matter, it certainly would be interesting to see Cumberbatch in such a role. What do you think of this? As usual, sound off with your thoughts in the comment section below.

The James Bond film series is a British series of spy films based on the fictional character of MI6 agent James Bond (code designation "007"), who originally appeared in a series of books by Ian Fleming. Earlier films were based on Fleming's novels and short stories, followed later by films with original storylines. It is one of the longest continually-running film series in history, having been in ongoing production from 1962 to the present. The latest entry of the franchise, Skyfall (starring Daniel Craig as James Bond), is set to be released on October 23, 2012.

Yeah, cause UK newspapers NEVER miss the mark on movie casting scoops.

I'm surprised they haven't claimed its called "Bond 24: The Wrath of Khan" and (insert x factor winner) will be singing the theme song.

Good actor but a wee bit too posh .. what about the older statesman Jeremy Irons or a really gritty hardman?

Of course Silva dies in Skyfall. All James Bond main villains die in James Bond movies. If they did not die, Bond would not be doing his job. In that case, Bond might as well be a regular cop or FBI agent. If MI-6 sticks Bond on you that means to two things, you're a bad ass and you're as good as dead...you just don't know it yet. :-)

Yeah the next Bond movie shouldn't even be in pre-production any earlier than late 2013, way too soon for casting announcements.

Chris Nolan should direct a Bond movie. Can you imagine how perfect that would be?

Besides having an awesome name for a kitty ("BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, YOU GET OFF THAT TABLE RIGHT NOW!" "STOP SCRATCHING UP MY CHAIR, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH!"), Benedict Cumberbatch also happens to be one of the finest actors working today. He could captivate an audience by reading a phone book.

If its true... Then I dont know how should I feel!

He's an amazing actor & will be one of the best villains ever for Bond!
But; he's already the villain for 2 huge franchises!

Smog in Hobbit & "some-dark-bad-guy" in Star Trek Into Darkness!

I fear he might not get only casted as a Villain!

He's [frick]ing Sherlock & the BEST one!
He needs to be protagonist in big blockbusters!

Wow, this guy is being a boss with movie roles now. Getting to play freakin' Sherlock Holmes, getting a main villain role in Star Trek, and now he might get to be a main villain in a Bond film, too! Next they're going to say that they're rebooting Star Wars, and he is going to be Darth Vader (overdramatization).

He needs to play more good guys. He's too wonderful to be evil in everything.

Just watched the second season of Sherlock over the weekend. Love that show. Pisses me off we have to wait until next fall for season 3 and why must they make only a 3 episode season? Cumberbatch is a thumbs up from me for playing a Bond villain.

FilmsFan@ Not sure I would qualify his voicing Smaug as playing a villain role. He's not onscreen, so that shouldn't typecast him as an actor at all.

Grif is happy. We must rejoice!

EH! Maybe Benedict Cumberbatch could play a Bond villian, but not James Bond. I would say that would kill the 007 franchise if they did cast him as Bond in the future.
