BOX OFFICE: KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Exceeds Expectations With $35M+ Weekend
Despite being forced to face off against Fifty Shades of Grey this Valentine's Day weekend, Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' Kingsman: The Secret Service has been a box office hit domestically and overseas. Hit the jump for details...
Fifty Shades of Grey opened this weekend with a three day total of over $81 million despite being torn apart by critics, but moviegoers with taste found refuge with Matthew Vaughn's brilliant Kingsman: The Secret Service. The raunchy adaptation now holds the best Presidents Day weekend opening record of all-time, but Kingsman has still done very well with a $35.6 million haul way above estimates which had it pegged at debuting with $20 million. It's thought that it will hit $41 million by tomorrow, and it has earned $43.8 million overseas for a worldwide total close to $80 million. What's next for Vaughn? There's been talk of a sequel, but he's also dropped hints about being approached for another big franchise. Marvel Studios' Spider-Man reboot, anyone?
