Casting For Mortal Kombat: The Digital Series Announced - Plus Jeri Ryan Gallery

Warner Premiere today announced initial casting for their upcoming live-action digital new media series "Mortal Kombat" which is based on the iconic gaming franchise.

Jeri Ryan, ("Star Trek: Voyager") will reprise her role as the headstrong "Lieutenant Sonya Blade" from the unofficial fan short. She is joined by Michael Jai White ("The Dark Knight") as "Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs" and Darren Shahlavi ("300") as the sly and cunning "Kano."

Kevin Tancharoen who directed and produced the popular, unofficial "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" fan short that garnered over 10 million views worldwide, is bringing the same immersive directing style to this live-action digital new media series. Fans will be able to delve deep into the history of the warriors they know and love including "Sub-Zero" and "Scorpion." Shooting for "Mortal Kombat" is currently underway in Vancouver.

"It's extremely gratifying to have such talented actors playing these iconic roles," said Kevin Tancharoen, Director, Producer and Co-Writer of "Mortal Kombat." "They will bring the essence of 'Mortal Kombat' to life and gamers will be deeply immersed into the game's universe."

"Mortal Kombat" is one of the most celebrated videogame franchises of all time. Since its debut in 1992, it has spawned four arcade games, multiple console-based videogame titles, two movies ("Mortal Kombat" and "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation"), two television series and an animated prequel. Additionally, a new "Mortal Kombat" video game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. will be available April 19, 2011 on the PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Written by Kevin Tancharoen, Aaron Helbing and Todd Helbing, and available online this spring from Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, the "Mortal Kombat" digital new media series is an anthology of multiple live action shorts. Each episode will provide never-before-revealed insights into characters featured in the upcoming videogame as well as the game's universe.

"Mortal Kombat," the newest chapter of the award-winning videogame franchise, will be on store shelves starting April 19th, 2011. Marking a triumphant return to the series' mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic, "Mortal Kombat" will introduce a number of new game-play features including tag team, a deeper story mode and nostalgic online and offline arcade battles. Players will be able to choose from an extensive lineup of iconic warriors and challenge their friends in head-to-head competition as well as several new game modes.

I'm intrigued by this, I love the original 1995 movie and thought the rebirth short was a cool idea but I don't want to see a mortal kombat crime drama. I want Liu Lang shootin fireballs n Raiden electrocuting the shit out of people. Plus, the true rivalry between sub zero and scorpion, who knows, maybe well see my favorite character, noon saibot, on screen for once

Forget about MK...

Lets focus on some real talent... and that's Jeri Ryan wearing a bikini, or nothing at all. Mmmm, mmmm.... Add to that Christina Hendricks and we got the ultimate fantasy blockbuster! Gotta love those red heads.

That rebirth short was really cool, it was something new and fresh even though it didn't play very close to the games story. I always liked the idea of using the characters and making your own story, that way there's nothing your compared to or held against.

sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 6:25 AM
It seems to be more canonical to MK than the short was but people must remember that us fans of MK tend to want a faithful adaptation rather than something someone made up and decided to call MK. That's how ya get movies like Catwoman, Street Fighter:The Legend of Chun-Li, Dragonball Evolution, X-Men Origins:Wolverine, or any videogame adaptation made by Uwe Boll.

@Deadpool: Fresh and new my ass...that short film ripped off Saw and Law And Order at the same time.

thought the short was cool, pumped for the game and i will be watching these shorts.

still laugh at people who think that rebirth was way off from mortal kombat games. i point to annihilation and say THAT is pretty far off. this simply looks like a new take, a "dark knight" kombat. wether it can sustain a series, digital or not, remains to be seen.

but i gotta be hopeful

@Boogie138: Rebirth(I'm talking about the short film solely) is EVEN FURTHER off from MK than Annihilation was.

- Jax and Sonya weren't in the Special Forces(which do exist in real life last time I checked)

- Johnny Cage died way too early

- Shang Tsung was no longer a sorcerer but a crime boss

- Baraka was no longer a nomadic Tarkatan prince from Outworld but an emo doctor that surgically attached bleades to himself and somehow got amazing Martial Arts Skills from it despite the fact that he should be in pain from that and would have no time to train.

- Reptile was no longer a Saurian reptile from Outworld but a guy with a rare disease that would make him weaker and weaker but somehow he's managing to be a serial killer.

- The Mortal Kombat tournament is now an underground thing rather than event from a different plane of existence that is used as a means to give the people of Earth a chance to defend their world from being conquered by other realms.

- Deacon City is not a city in Mortal Kombat OR in Real life.

- Scorpion is seemingly no longer an undead ninja while Subzero looks like a full on automated cyborg rather than a half human/half cryomancer species that he is.

- Then add on the fact that the younger and current Subzero is already killed by Scorpion despite the fact that in the games he spared his life and agreed to protect him to atone for killing his brother.

Now The Dark Knight

- Batman was still a costumed vigilante going out into the night whose parents were killed by Joe Chill

- Bruce Wayne still puts on a facade of being a playboy to avoid suspicion of the people

- Bruce Wayne still learned from training in Japan with the League of Shadows before coming back to inherit his dad's Business

- Two-face is still an indecisive person who leaves his life up to chance

- Joker is still a psychotic clown

See the difference? At least Nolan stayed true to the roots of the Batman mythos while Rebirth stripped the franchise completely of its identity.

Wow...considering how much VG adaptations get fricked up I'm surprised some of y'all are willing to bend over and take anything MK related yet bash X-Men:First Class for also taking too many liberties with the source.

Good, the guy playing Kano is a martial artist, stunt man and actor. He's done some credible movies.

I was afraid they were going to get some actors who weren't martial artists or some martial artists that weren't actors.

I'm still not feeling Jeri Ryan, though. It's an odd choice.A 40-something year old woman with no martial arts training. There are plenty of suitable younger actresses without training, as well as plenty of suitable younger actresses with training.

..more nerd super fanboy complaining, Keep it coming. "Not faithful enough", "I wanna see fireballs and electrocuting", didn't we get that in the first 2 films?? Hmmm
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 7:58 AM
@Luther: What happened in the first two films dont mean sh!t because those weren't even really faithful to begin with....I'm looking forward to this series because it seems more faithful but the short film in and of itself was ridiculously unfaithful even moreso than any CBM has been.

Plus the fact that you're posting on sites like this makes your right to call people nerds null and void IMO
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 8:01 AM
@kidzombie: From the sound of the press releases as well as the premise revealed in the article I did yesterday it seems to be more faithful to MK than the short film was

ARE you Kidding me its a FAN MADE SHORT !!!!!!, and it was alot better then the 90 mins of crap that was annilation.
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 8:07 AM
@LocoLobo1127: That's not saying much but anything can be way better than Annihilation...plus I just wonder why he didnt just use the pre-existing human character rather than humanizing the otherworldly ones.

With that said......... Some people found that Batman: Year One script with Batman as a homeless drifter than uses a hockey suit and golfcart instead of his costume and Batmobile to be better than Batman and Robin but that didn't mean they would tolerate it as a take on Batman.

Not to meantion Street Fighter:Legacy was a fan-made short as well and it was more faithful to anything SF related and it did the supernatural attacks justice while the MK short was a complete departure.

Haters will hate, because that's what they do. It was a fantastic short that toyed with the source material, and placed it in a more realistic world. Ed Boon himself said the thought it was fantastic, and noted that it was a "legitimate alternate universe Mortal Kombat," and that it was "incredibly well done." If the creator salutes it, and puts his stamp of approval on it, as it were, then how can anyone dislike it?
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 9:41 AM
@Reflecting Hierophant: The same way fans hate Fantastic Four despite Stan Lee loving it or One More Day despite Stan thinking it was good.

Plus Boon admitted that it CROSSED THE LINE AS FAR AS REIMAGININGS GO. Not to mention he said MK:Annihilation was good before it came out are we supposed to like that too?

I bet if someone did this kind of crap to a franchise like Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, Hellboy, Superman, or even X-Men..... you'd be singing a completely different tune.

@Intruder

dude its the same thing even Mortal Kombat had comic book also.

also Sweetre15 is right if they mess around the source material in x-men like what FOX done u will be p!ssed the same way i was p!ssed with MK Rebirth.

@ReflectingHierophant

that not toying the source material they fricking butuched it. whats next Dr Strange cant use his powers cause its unrealistic.

sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 11:20 AM
@Intruder: Regardless both have in-depth mythologies that can be turned into compelling works if adapted faithfully unless you're an unimaginative hack.

Again, I'm sure if it was an adaptation of an IP you were passionate about and grew up with, regardless of if it's a videogame, novel, cartoon, Tv series etc.,you'd be pissed about them disregarding the source.

Plus MK has had comic book runs as well as the games that have been around since the early 90's.

@Jazzman: Speak the truth my friend.

@Sweetre15

thank u

to me some people have very short memory. people get upset about how film studio butching characters source materials but when Mortal Kombat Rebirth did the same thing its alright.

the only reason people like MK Rebirth is only because it had gore apart from that the characters and story is p!ss poor.

YakeTheSnake
YakeTheSnake - 2/14/2011, 1:58 PM
@Sweetre15: The difference between what Mr. Boon said about "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" and "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth," is that he was promoting the former of the two. Actors, directors, writers, etc. all say positive things about films while they're promoting them. While he did initially state that it "crossed the line," he later said that it was a "legitimate alternate universe Mortal Kombat," as well as being "incredibly well done."
And, as far as the "double-standard" goes: I hate "Lord of the Rings" and "Superman." So, if someone were to do this "crap" to one of them, it couldn't make me hate them any more. I'm all about people putting their own twists on established stories, as long as it's done tastefully. So, if someone can put a spin on "Harry Potter," "X-Men," or "Hellboy," and it still be decent, then so be it...

@jazzman: "Butchered" is an awful strong term to use. If someone were to make a "Dr. Strange" movie (fingers crossed), he probably shouldn't be placed in a "Too-Realistic" setting. It really wouldn't work. Not every character can work in a realistic setting, I think we can all agree on that. I didn't think Mortal Kombat would work in a realistic setting, but "Rebirth" shows us that it can. Some characters will be lost in the shuffle, which will leave most fans p*ssed. But, if this guy can figure out a more realistic take on Reptile (I will agree that his take on Reptile was really pushing it), then I'm sure not that many characters would be lost. But, with his Subzero, he really seemed to steer away from his "realistic" take, so maybe it can be a world where Realistic and Fantastic can live in brutal, bloody harmony...
YakeTheSnake
YakeTheSnake - 2/14/2011, 2:00 PM
AND, regardless of our differing opinions, we can all agree that Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan are excellent choices...
jazzman
jazzman - 2/14/2011, 2:25 PM
@ReflectingHierophant

yes Rebirth did butchered the characters

Rebirth did not show it can work in a realisitic world. why the hell Baraka a failed plastic surgeon put blades in his arm thats one of the most unrealisitic thing. Baraka and Reptile are not humans they both monsters from outworld.

Jax and Sonya making a deal with Scorpion WTF. they have no real connection to Scorpion only at the tournament. the only person they should be talking to is Kano.

Jax and Sonya in the game are not police officers but U.S. Special Forces. u telling me they could not have them as U.S. Special Forces in Rebirth.

look Rebirth changes of the characters is the same thing what Hollywood did with TEKKEN, Street Fighter live action movie, Street Fighter Legend of Chun-Li, King of Fighter movie. they all butucher all the characters backstory as they like.

imagine i did a X-Men movie and had Wolverine a failed plastic surgeon who puts blades in his arm. or Cyclop and Jean Grey two police hunting downing a killer by the name of Magneto. what about Toad instead of him been a mutant his just a human with a skin disorderd.

lets see the reaction of people if i did that i bet it wont be good. even tho its my own twist to the X-Men universe.
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 4:00 PM
@jazzman: Exactly...

Not to mention this simple fact If you watch MK Rebirth's trailer with the volume off you would not be able to tell it had ANYTHING to do with MK BUT when you watch the trailer's for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with the volume off you're still able to tell it's a Batman film.

sweetre15
sweetre15 - 2/14/2011, 6:43 PM
@Reflecting Hierophant: Just look at this post of mine to see why MK wouldn't work with "realism" aka plausibility.

Case in point, if you use realism and it strips the source of it's core premise as well as the characters' identities and requires retooling everything about the franchise from scratch then it DOES NOT WORK. Batman is an earth-based hero that has a lot of human villains so Batman lends himself to a real-world take a lot more than MK ever would because it would take everything fans have known and loved about MK for several years and completely throw it in the trash.
YakeTheSnake
YakeTheSnake - 2/14/2011, 11:37 PM
@Sweetre15: I read that when you first posted it above... But, I honestly see your point now. I just really hate counting out a movie/tv show before I actually see it. I still think that "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" was excellent, and it will make a fantastic show. But, it does strip everything that was "Mortal Kombat" from the source material. Perhaps if it wasn't called "Mortal Kombat," it would be more accepted by fans...
