According to Twitch Film Spike Lee is offering the role of the main villain in Oldboy to British actor Clive Owen. This is a role that has been a lot harder to shore up than the main lead, which Josh Brolin is locked in for. Actors Colin Firth and Christian Bale have been said to have passed on the role of the villain. Firth acknowledged that he was considering the part, but soon passed. Now Spike has his eyes set on Clive, who is someone that he has worked with before. He hired Clive Owen for the lead in Inside Man a bank robbery heist film.

Twitch has learned that the villain role has now been offered to Clive Owen. Owen and Lee have history, of course, having worked together on Lee's underrated thriller The Inside Man. That the director and star know and like each other is certainly a plus but a much bigger plus is that Owen embodies the perfect blend of sophistication and menace that the part requires along with the sort of charisma needed to go toe to toe with Brolin. Now he just needs to say yes. - Twitch Film

While in other casting news The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that True Blood star, James Frain is joining the cast of Johnny Depp's The Lone Ranger. Frain is best known for playing a vampire in the popular HBO vampire show. He tortured and raped Rutina Wesley's character Tara, and then was killed off by her.

Frain will play a tough foreman overseeing Chinese and Indian rail workers who works for the story’s chief villain (Wilkinson). - The Hollywood Reporter

Thanks to Josh Wilding for the heads up.

I like Clive Owen as an actor but ever since I saw Shoot Em Up, I can't think of him the same. That movie was plain simple.

Owen is decent choice but i think James Frain would be perfect. He has that creepy psychotic look what i think the role needs.

I really hope they are going to add Butch Cavendish to the Lone Ranger movie. He is after all the archenemy of that character.
They should get Jeffrey Dean Morgan for that role.

Clive Owen is for me a great actor. I loved Inside Men, Children of Men, Closer and of course Sin City. I think Bale was better suited based on his American Psycho performance, but Owen is a good choice too.

Clive Owen and Josh Brolin going against each other could be interesting, and the guy was just great as the villain in Inside Man.

Christian Bale, Colin Firth, and now Clive Owen. They keep asking actors whose name starts with C.

Clive Owen deserves this, in my eyes he hasn't had a decent role since Children of Men, maybe shoot em up, pushing it.

I cannot stand Clive Owen. Really really really can't stand him. Don't know what it is about the guy. Just rubs me the wrong way. I'm sure he's broken up about it, too.

Frain was excellent in The Tudors.

I cannot in any way understand why someone would NOT like Clive Owen. I just can't. You may hate some of the cheap movies he has been in, but his performance in those has NEVER been mailed in. He's no snob.

*Bent was such an understated play/movie - his first (?) lead role.
*Closer is probably my favorite role of his, probably because he has so much raw energy there. His academy award nom was definitely deserved.
*Children of Men was great, if not overrated.
*Sin City - Tarantino had his back for his pulpy narrative.
*Inside Man was good, not great.
*Croupier is probably my favorite movie with him. Great neo-noir.

Note: Jason (Ryan Kwanten) is actually the one who delivers the "true death" with a wooden bullet.
