Yesterday, ABC announced that it had handed a series pickup to an untitled show based on the Stumptown graphic novels by Greg Rucka (The Punisher) and Matthew Southworth (Spider-Man: The Grim Hunt). Avengers: Endgame star Cobie Smulders has landed the lead role, and it's said that the network has high hopes for the drama.

I was able to speak to Cobie last night about her new movie Songbird (a.k.a. Alright Now) less than an hour after the pickup was made official, and I asked her what we should expect from the show.

"Yeah, we just found out today that the show's been picked up which is really exciting. Like you said, it's based off those graphic novels and features a wonderful character. I'm playing this really stricken woman who is trying to become a private investigator but she's got a lot of issues and is an ex-military member. She's dealing with PTSD, she's a gambler and she's drinking a lot. She's a little bit of a mess but extremely honourable and inherently good. It takes place in the city of Portland and it's a cool town and the show is about that, these characters, and the crime in this city."

Written by Jason Richman and directed by James Griffiths, the show follows Dex Parios (Smulders). According to the official synopsis, "her military intelligence skills make her a great P.I., but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police."

It sounds like a series with a lot of potential and it will mark Cobie's return to network TV after starring in How I Met Your Mother and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Given the talent involved, it should nicely fill the void left by Jessica Jones' cancellation and, if we're being honest, the character sounds much cooler!

Check back here later today for more from the actress on Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Songbird

Sounds a lot like Jessica Jones to me. Not heard anything about this but I'll give it a whirl when it airs.

@hummingbird68 - I hadn't read either Umbrella Academy or Deadly Class before watching the shows and they both impressed me - so am willing to give another new property a try, especially as this one stars Cobie Smulders :)

Its a great read. A little Jessica Jones-esque, but not too much to where its glaring. Dex is a little more warm-hearted when it counts. However, its up to the show-runners to really make that clear.

I recommend it highly.
