Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for Marc Webb’s Day Drinker, an upcoming action thriller that seemingly features supernatural elements as Johnny Depp seeks revenge on everyone who has wronged him.
Whether he means only in the movie or is not-so-subtly breaking the fourth wall is for the audience to decide. Per the synopsis, "In DAY DRINKER, a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) encounters a mysterious onboard guest (Johnny Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming."
After personal troubles forced him to take his career in a different direction, Depp is currently on the comeback trail, with this winter’s Ebenezer set to be his first major theatrical release since 2018. While that film is based on pre-existing IP, Day Drinker will be his first lead role in an original film in over a decade, so its success will go a long way toward determining whether Depp is still the box office draw he was in the late 2000s.
In addition to Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean; Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), the cast features Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks; Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz (The Invite; Vanilla Sky), Lazaro Manu Ríos (The Chosen One; Nowhere), Arón Piper (Elite; Muted), Juan Diego Botto (The Suicide Squad; Good Behavior), Anika Boyle (Stranger Things: The First Shadow; Summerwater), and Javier Botet (Mama; IT).
Day Drinker marks the fourth big-screen collaboration between Depp and Cruz, following Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. Each of their previous three movies was a major box office success, which bodes well for their new project’s prospects—though it is currently slated to open opposite Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which could make things a tad challenging.
Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man; Gifted) helmed the feature from a screenplay by Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War; The Gorge). Dean also serves as a producer alongside John Wick duo Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner, and Nathan Kahane.
Day Drinker hits theaters on March 26, 2027!
