Don't be so quick to judge

Don't be so quick to judge

It's easy to judge a cast choice when we haven't even seen the actor/actress in the role...

Editorial Opinion

Now I have never done an editorial before so this is a big day for me: I'm losing my Editorial Virginity! (yay!)

Now on to the article....

I feel as though that we as fans of CBMs have become a little too picky when judging roles in said film. We can't look past the surface on what the actors look like and we judge how they are going to do before they even start filming the movie.

Now, how many of you can honestly say you knew 100% without a shadow of a doubt that Heath Ledger (RIP) was gonna blow the part of the Joker clean outta the water? Not many! I would even hazard to guess that lots of you said things such as "He doesn't even look like the Joker" or maybe "He can't be the Joker, he's Australian!" Maybe I'm way off base here, but let's choose another more recent example.

How about Chris Hemsworth as Thor or Chris Evans as Capt. America? Both were not huge guys but they bulked up quite a bit for their roles.

I could go on and on with examples but I will spare the torment and end it here.

Sound off below with what you think and maybe post your initial reactions to the casting of actors and their roles.

Majestically fails? So it will fail with great dignity? Or are you just trying to use big words to make your constant bitching sound like it has a point? It's well documented you prefer Marvel.

And recommending Qunito for Hal Jordan is equal to suggesting Christopher Walken for Squirrel Girl.

you forgot the big one wadepool keaton the outcry that happened is well documented the guy was CRAZY as batman not perfect bruce but he was still good and every one was saying he wouldnt be able to pull it off, and are you crazy reynolds and evans both look the part perfect. ledger is the greatest example i will be brutally honest when first heard i was a bit sceptical but i wasnt bitching about it, i like being open minded and actually giving actors chances. Roscoe and Intruder please dont turn this in to thor vs GL kinda getting tired of it, i hope thor does good but also hopefully GL does good aswell this coming from a marvel fan aswell by the way who will watch both movies

Keaton as Batman, Reeve before he beefed up, and Downey as Stark.

Look I have my doubts about Reynolds, Hemsworth, and Evans, too. Jackman as Wolverine is good, but if he were shorter he would not only be closer to the character's attributes but seem even more dangerous. You also wouldn't need a seven-foot tall Sabretooth.

I agree with the author, we should just chill until we see them...the real problem is the internet. People are sitting in the security of their homes (or basements) and use attack mentality because they can only be answered with keystrokes.

When they cast Tobey Maguire as my favorite character, I simply skipped watching any of his movies (I hadn't seen any previously) until the first movie was released.

I think we should all be more concerned how they translate characters and realms rather than the individual actors. I'm very worried about Asgard in the 'real' Marvel cinema world. I'm very worried about the removal of Nazis from WWII in "Captain America." Since I'm not a billionaire, I will wait a day or so after release, listen to reviews and other people think, then go. It's all you can do.

it was reported on CBM exclusively aswell lol, obviously there not going to be the main focus of the movie but they are there, hydra hasnt replaced them, hydra is a agency of the nazi army which will eventually split from the nazis in the movie because red skull has much more crazier goals then hitler, which all sounds good to me, all of this info is in EW magazine that covered cap

I know I've gone on record as complaining about Andrew Garfield for Spiderman, but it's not about the actor playing the role. It's about the progression of the franchise.

I have no doubt that most actors can portray our beloved characters. I don't think Clooney and Kilmer are such bad actors that they ruined Batman, but rather the direction/writing of those films were so bad that they weren't any good either. Now I do think it is important not to just pick a flavor of the week, such as Clooney or Afleck.

@Superguy. Yep. They only cast Reynolds because the nerds love the guy from one of the worst-received comic-book movies ever. Nerds would never go for the star of Firefly and Serenity.

Nathan by the way, is nothing remotely close to Hal Jordan. I like him, but he's no Hal.

You don't like Reynolds in serious roles? Have you seen Buried? He's goddamn incredible.

Congrats on your first editorial, Wadepool! I, too, try to keep an open mind. I have no problem with CBM's casting unknown or obscure actors for their characters. (Robert Downey Jr was frown upon by a lot of people when he was cast as Tony Stark.)

I do think Ryan Renolds only got GL because of his name draw, which may or may not pay off. And I was really opposed to Chris Evans being cast as Captain America. (Hasn't he been typecast as too many superheros already?)

But it's more than just the actors. The directors, producers, and casting agents chose these people for a reason. If everyone does their jobs, they can deliver to us, the fans, what we're hoping for. Egos aside, assuming the film is produced and directed with integrity, any actor could be a surprisingly good fit for a superhero role.

Wonderful sentiment. But as sure as the sun rises in the morning, fans will pre-judge (and fail).

I will agree with you wade. Its not just the actors that make the movie; it is also the story and way that it is all put together in the end. I have to admit that when I heard that Chris Hemsworth was playing Thor I was like who? Now that I have seen the trailer and things on the movie I can say that I think he was the right choice.

@wadepool: This is a short but a VERY good article. and you gave a great example with Heath Ledger (R.I.P) as the Joker. all comic fans were skeptical of him playing the part. but now after the Dark Knight came out, everybody says that his portrayal of the Joker is arguably the best so far.

Now i can see if the Actor looks absolutely nothing like the character, but they can atleast be passable.
