FACE/OFF Sequel In The Works From GODZILLA VS. KONG Director Adam Wingard

Though original reports pegged it as a remake, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has now clarified that he is working on a direct sequel to John Woo's preposterous '90s action thriller, Face/Off.

Godzilla Vs. Kong helmer Adam Wingard is set to write and direct a Face/Off sequel for Paramount.

Variety originally reported that the fan-favorite filmmaker was working on a remake of John Woo's 1997 action thriller, but Wingard and the project's co-writer Simon Barrett later took to social media to clarify that it's actually going to be a direct sequel.

The original starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage as an FBI special agent and a terrorist, respectively, who literally swap faces and assume each others' identities (against the former's will). It's generally seen as a silly, but fun diversion, and has gained a strong cult following over the years.

As far as we know, Travola and Cage will not be reprising their roles, as the movie is expected to "have a brand new cast." Whether that means different actors will be brought in to play Sean Archer and Castor Troy is unclear.

What do you guys make of this news? Do you consider Face/Off to be an action classic, or a load of nonsense? Or both? Drop us a comment in the usual place, and please enjoy the following video.

This is a perfect vehicle for Wingard. The Guest and You’re Next, prove he’s right for this.

@BlackBeltJones - What if Godzilla vs Kong is [frick]ing ass tho

@tmp3 - It looks good...the 2 minutes of randomly spliced footages we’ve seen haha. It could stink (see Death note; although I think that was more Netflix wanting to Americanize the material too much).

Wingard works best with cheap thrills (The Guest) and being playful, taking the tropes of one genre, messing around with the expectations they set. Face/Off is the sort of material that’s just that.

I still enjoy watching this movie. But does it really warrant a sequel especially if the characters and actors aren't coming back. I've been wrong before aka jumanji but this I don't know

@Ace101 - I mean, you can just get 2 new guys to swap faces. Granted I don't know why it would need to be a sequel but still.

Also nic cages character died pretty definitively so there's that.

I say no to the remake but to be fair I'm a sucker for the original. "I wanna take his face.......off"

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssss..............!!!

I love Face/Off and super glad that they're doing a sequel instead of the remake. Cage and Travolta's chemistry and performances made that movie, along with John Woo's amazing action Direction.

@HeavyMetal4Life Have you seen this dude?

Also I watched In Search of the Last Action Heroes documentary on Amazon Prime, it was mainly about 1980's and 1990's action movies and loved it, if anyone ese likes the genre

@Se4M4NSt4ine - WoW That's great casting. I think I'd be disappointed if it wasn't those two.

It's going to be very difficult to cast, the first one worked because Cage and Travolta have such district personalities, they're so famous for their mannerisms that it was fun seeing them try to imitate each other, something viewers were also attempting for years, Cage impersonations especially, there really isn't any young actors around with the kind of recognisable voice or personality as Cage or Travolta.

@ARMUS - That was half the appeal, although the direction was tight. I say just watch it again and let it lie.

Face/Off is great. A direct sequel doesn’t make much sense without the original actors though.

@mgeoff88 - And since the main villain died. Don't need this. Don't want this.

I mean... sure? Obviously Travolta and Cage aren’t coming back so the whole appeal of the original film is out the window. Maybe with better writing, we can have a good film, but I don’t know if I see this ever going into production lol

I love the original, it’s one of my favorite action movies, and I guess someone’s got to give John Travolta work. His last couple movies have been abysmal.

Great action flick. Worth a watch for Cage's performance alone.
