First Reaction To Spike Lee's OLDBOY

First Reaction To Spike Lee's OLDBOY

A JoBlo reader was lucky enough to catch a test screening of Spike Lee's adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya's Manga (or remake of Park Chan-wook's original if you prefer) and gives his reaction. He doesn't give TOO much away, but obviously there are some spoilers.

JoBlo have posted a reader's reaction to a test screening of Spike Lee's Oldboy. Apparently it was only a rough cut, coming in at just over 2 hours. He praises Josh Brolin's performance as Joe above all, comparing his character to anti-heroes like Beaking Bad's Walter White. "You feel for him, you root for him, but that does not make him a good guy." He also says Sharloto Copley "blew him away" as the villain, and was almost unrecognizable in the role. He only seemed to have some issues with Elizabeth Olsen, who he praises but seems to feel she didn't have enough to do.

As far as similarities to the original go, from this account I get the impression that this movie sticks a bit closer to the Manga while also working as a remake. The reviewer mentions a few minor differences, but the overall plot seems pretty much the same. He says the hallway fight is there, with a few tweaks, and that infamous ending hasn't been changed either. "The ending is even more incestuous than the original. The “big twist?” Still in there as is. However, the villain’s character…let’s just say the best thing about incest is that it’s the game the whole family can play!" Sounds even more disturbing! Anyone fearing that the violence would be toned down for American audiences needn't worry either. "The violence hasn’t been downplayed even a little bit as its just as sick and twisted as the original. If I had to summarize the violence in three words, they would bloody, gratuitous and hammer." He also praises Lee's direction but didn't seem to have liked the score -- or lack thereof -- for the film.

In summing up:

"Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and I can’t wait to see the final version of it in theatres. Even after seeing the original, I could say that I like them equally as much. The acting, story, and action all outweigh the negatives of the film, which can (and hopefully will be) fixed up before the final cut‘s release. I’ll give it an 8/10. And, as a quick note, the film was presented without a title, so we might have to start referring to it as something else sometime soon."

Sounds good to me. Be sure to click on the link below to read the report in full.

Eh, still gratuitous. Only reason it's being adapted again is because of Park's version's international acclaim. I hate to say that because I like Josh Brolin, but it's going to be a Redbox for me.

This is good to hear. I don't think it will be as good as the original, but as long as it stays true to form i think people who haven't seen the Korean version are gonna be blown away.

Spike Lee isn't as good as a filmmaker as he thinks he is. I'm going into this one skeptical.

If they're are going to make this movie simlar to "oldboy" and if everyone thinks this movie is similar to oldboy just watch the korean movie. It has much better actors with better action and setting. Josh brolin is no CHOI MIN SIK.

I'm surprised that Hollywood still lets him make films. I'm even more shocked that he tore himself away from courtside long enough to slap together another what I'm sure will be his next attempt to change the source material into his next foray into the problems with race in society. It's gotta be the shoes Spike!

I'm glad spike is churning out some quality projects again. Miracle at St Anna was a let down, but Inside Man and Red Hook Summer have really sparked my interest back in him.

Here's hoping Oldboy turns out well.

Why all the Spike Lee hate? He's made some badass films, sure he's had some misses, but no director is perfect. I'm looking forward to this. The Kincks suck though.

I believe it follows the manga more than the Korean movie (which is badass & one of my favorite movies!!!) if you haven't seen it do yourself a BIG favor & watch it, also checkout "I Saw The Devil" which also stars Choi Min Sik it's a sick performence!!!

The Korean movie is way different to the original Japanese Manga and so is its ending.Spikes Lee's version is probably going to be just as completely different since both his and the Korean movie are not even set in Japan or have any of the Characters depicted as their original Japanese persona's or even names.

One day some Japanese director will make a definitive version.

Changing title?

I wonder what they change it?

Joeboy? BoyJoe? Boyold? Man of Vengeance? Oldman?

Im not against remakes. As long as they remake movies that need to be remade. This didnt really needed it. What it needed is version much closer to the japanese manga. But whatever.

LOL How about Iron Boy then we could listen the whining of those people who took their children to the theater to watch the film because they thought it has something to do with Iron Man. ;)

Surely there should be a massive spoiler warning plastered all over this, I know Id be super pis.sed if I hadnt seen the original before and read this article.

As for this remake I'm all kinds of meh about it, it just aint gonna live up to the korean one so whats the fu.cking point, altho Brolin and Copley are pretty much always great

I'm in the middle on this. I haven't watched a Spike Lee film so I don't know what to expect. But it's OldBoy. And OldBoy is awesome. But that's the problem. OldBoy is awesome. the original Korean film. This film might not be awesome.

"The ending is even more incestuous than the original."
So maybe instead of his daughter whispering in his ear, and we don't hear what she says we just see his reaction, we hear what she whispers, and she says, "I'm pregnant."?
