GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Star Chris Pratt Reveals Whether He Was Really Going To Play INDIANA JONES

A few years ago, there were rumblings online that Chris Pratt (Thor: Love and Thunder) was being eyed to take over the role of Indiana Jones from Harrison Ford. So, was there ever any truth to the rumor?

With James Mangold's Indiana Jones 5 fast approaching, it's easy to forget that there was a time when it looked like Harrison Ford wouldn't reprise the role of the iconic adventurer. Earlier this week, the actor celebrated his 80th birthday, and it's clear that next June's fifth chapter in this franchise will likely be Ford's last.

Set photos have confirmed that VFX will be used to de-age him for specific sequences, but a few years ago, we heard that Chris Pratt was being eyed to take over the role.

Hot off the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, that news didn't come as much of a surprise, but fans weren't massively keen on the idea of Ford being replaced, and while reliable sources reported that Pratt was in line to play Indy, it's believed the response to Solo: A Star Wars Story (where Alden Ehrenreich played Han Solo) put an end to that idea.

During an interview with Josh Horowitz (via ActionNewz.com), Pratt was asked about those Indiana Jones recasting rumours, and it's clear he was once under consideration.

"I don't even know who Steven Spielberg is. Steven who? No, aren't they doing Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford?" the actor joked, feigning ignorance. "Here's the thing, all I know is that I once saw a quote from Harrison Ford who said that when, and I don't even really know if it was really him, but it was enough to scare me, he was like, 'When I die, Indiana Jones dies.'"

"And I'm like, am I gonna like get haunted by the ghost of Harrison Ford one day when he dies if I play [the character]. I don't know, that's not anything that is real I think, people are capable of making mistakes even if they're Deadline."

While it would make sense for a younger actor to take over the role so the franchise can live on, it's easy enough to see how it could have backfired on Lucasfilm. It would have also been a risk for Pratt, especially as his star was on the rise at the time thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. Even so, a failed Indiana Jones reboot could have been disastrous.

Harrison is 100% right when he said that and Chris is right here. When Harrison dies, what's the point? It's all about that Ford charisma, that was the whole thing.

Might as well just make a series about a new explorer after that.

@Nightwing1015 - Two iconic explorers do exist but apparently they don't work in live action. Lara Croft & Nathan Drake. I do feel that Brendan Fraser was also a fun and iconic explorer too in The Mummy. I wouldn't mind that being rebooted with him returning.

Its like he is becoming the modern day version of his father in law

They throw him into anything to basically play the same character in a different setting

I'm surprised Harrison Ford just turned 80 and still shot this new Indiana movie, respect. But am also surprised that they will de-age him a bit, well maybe I shouldn't and on the other hand should have seen it coming.

I totally get Chris Pratt here, haunting joke included. And he's done just fine with Marvel and with Jurassic World even though I missed the final one, oh well.

@NinnesMBC - Seemed like he phoned it in Dominion. Not a very interesting character overall. Hell, even the OG cast was misused.

@NinnesMBC - I for sure thought Ford was 70, not 80. So, I'm impressed too he just shot a whole Indy movie. Gonna look really awkward with the action I think.
