Thanks to Empire Magazine (via ActioNewz.com), we're finally getting to see more from Indiana Jones 5. The publication confirms previous reports that the movie takes place in 1969, with America deep in a battle with the Russians to be first to the moon. However, the space race is also at the forefront of Indy's mind.
"The simple fact is that the moon-landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis," Indiana Jones 5 co-writer Jez Butterworth explains. "How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose."
"It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed," he continues, hinting that the adventurer now finds himself as a man out of time. "It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there - it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people that are behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies."
That's where Mads Mikkelson's villainous Voller comes in. Partly inspired by real-life Nazi-turned-NASA-engineer Wernher von Braun, the Doctor Strange star says, "He’s a man who would like to correct some of the mistakes of the past. There is something that could make the world a much better place to live in. He would love to get his hands on it."
"Indiana Jones wants to get his hands on it as well. And so, we have a story."
That story is one the legendary Harrison Ford hints is, "full of adventure, full of laughs, full of real emotion. And it’s complex and it’s sneaky. The shooting of it was tough and long and arduous. But I’m very happy with the film that we have."
We can't wait to see more from this one, and have to believe a trailer is on the horizon. That will more than likely play in front of Avatar: The Way of Water next month, so you'll want to keep checking back here as we'll have it for you the second it lands.
Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.
