UNCHARTED Star Antonio Banderas Shares First Details About His Mystery INDIANA JONES 5 Role

Doing the rounds to promote Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Antonio Banderas has opened up on his mystery role in Indiana Jones 5, saying that he has a small but pivotal part to play in Indy's story arc...

It was only a few years ago that it was starting to look like Indiana Jones 5 wasn't ever going to become a reality. For some, that came as welcome news after 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the disappointing movie that brought Harrison Ford back to one of his most iconic roles after a 19-year absence.

Director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas were plotting out story ideas prior to Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, with the former officially announced as Indiana Jones 5's helmer in 2016. Set for release in 2019, it was pushed to 2021 before Spielberg walked away from the project, agreeing to hand control of the iconic character to a different filmmaker.

Shortly after, Logan director James Mangold was tapped by Lucasfilm to take the helm of the project. That's led to an increased level of excitement for the movie, especially after Empire Magazine recently started pulling back the curtain on this long-awaited (latest) return for Ford's iconic adventurer.

However, while we got to see many characters, Antonio Bandaras' wasn't among them (though he was previously spotted on set looking a little less suave than normal).

He recently spoke to Collider (via ActioNewz.com), though, and confirmed he will only make a cameo appearance in Indiana Jones 5. Despite that, it sounds like he will still play an essential role in the story.

"My character is very little; it's almost a cameo. He's just a friend of Indiana's character, and he's looking for him because he needs something from his friend," Banderas explains. "But he just takes up very little time of the movie, but very happy to be part of a saga that is of the history of motion pictures, obviously."

It's a little surprising that an actor like Banderas only has a relatively minor role in proceedings, though it's a good indication that Mangold has filled his cast with as many huge names as possible. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Jones, and John Rhys-Davies will be among them.

Indiana Jones 5 is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2023.

After seeing him as Zorro and in the recent Uncharted movie, I wouldn't mind an adventure movie with Banderas as the protagonist.

So maybe we'll get a spin-off with his character? There's gonna be Indy spin-offs for sure, so I hope I'm willing one into existence that actually interests me.

Been watching him since I was too young to be watching Desperado. Throw in some Puss in Boots as well years later; freaking love this gentleman. (Damn scene stealer in Expendables 3 too.)

Indiana Jones' friends tend to either bungle boobytraps/ambushes and almost get him killed or try to kill him directly.

Can't wait for him to be hyped as the villain only to kill him stupidly half way through because of "subverting expectations".

@Origame - if you're talking about Uncharted, I'm not sure it was to subvert expectations. I remember his character had no more role to play, so they just had him killed off because they didn't need him anymore.

Either way, it's no good reason to get rid of a character.

@bkmeijer1 - ...I really don't know how he didn't have anymore of a role to play compared to any other uncharted villain before him. Plus, he had all the motivation for getting the treasure beyond just wanting money.

@Origame - true. I probably don't remember him because the character was such a cliche forgettable villain

@bkmeijer1 - I mean, he was pretty cliche yes. But he had more than the girl at the end. Plus, Antonio Banderas made him fun enough.

@Origame - indeed. The henchman girl (henchwoman I guess) was even more cliche. Banderas definitely made it better

The more I hear about Indy 5 the worse it sounds.

I Also hear that Banderas is probably the best thing in the movie and Ford seems like he's phoning it in.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Oh my....the rumors seem true.

That woman is Marcus Brody's daughter Helena.
Indiana Jones is supposed to find a magic clock that opens a time portal.
He goes back in time with Brody's daughter Helena.
They find young Indiana Jones in 1933, which is why Toht (Mads Mikelsen) is playing the younger version of him.

And according to the numerous rumors Young Indy sacrifices himself to save Helena and when he dies ( in 1933) the older Jones fades from existence like Marty McFly was going to.

And the next thing we see is a montage of Brody's daughter wearing the hat and carrying the whip and reenacting all of the most famous scenes from the previous Jones movies.

And at the end it says "Helena Brody will return" which means she is going to be the new Indiana Jones.

Dear God in heaven. If this all is true I will actually be physically ill.

@TyrantBossMedia - the movie was designed specifically to have TheQuartering suffer a rage infused heart attack
