JAMES BOND: Director Shortlist For Amazon's First 007 Movie Includes A Nolan (But Not The One We Wanted)

A shortlist of directors who have pitched ideas for the next James Bond movie to Amazon and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman has been revealed, and it includes a Nolan. Well, the wrong Nolan, that is.

The news broke earlier this year that longtime James Bond franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson had struck a deal with Amazon that gives the company full creative control over 007.

It's no secret that Amazon, owners of the Prime Video streaming platform, has been eager to expand and monetise the property since acquiring MGM. However, they repeatedly faced pushback from Broccoli.

As for Bond himself, it's unclear what the plan is for the iconic Sir Ian Fleming creation, but Amy Pascal and David Heyman have been tapped to oversee the property moving forward, starting with a new movie.

According to Puck (via ActioNewz.com), Pascal and Heyman have finally started meeting with filmmakers for the next James Bond movie. Those are Edward Berger (Conclave), Denis Villeneuve (Dune), Edgar Wright (Baby Driver), Jonathan Nolan (Fallout), and Paul King (Paddington).

It's an intriguing list of names, and each of these directors has vastly different backgrounds in filmmaking. The biggest disappointment for many fans will be the fact that Jonathan Nolan is being eyed to helm 007's next movie instead of his brother, Christopher.

However, we've previously heard that The Dark Knight Trilogy director would want a lot of creative control, something even Amazon might baulk at, given what audiences expect from the character. This first movie will be crucial for the company as it looks to establish the franchise's tone moving forward, and the expectation is that we'll eventually see some big and small screen spin-offs, too.

In a joint statement, Pascal and Heyman previously said, "James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. We are humbled to follow in the footsteps of Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson who made so many extraordinary films and honored and excited to keep the spirit of Bond very much alive as he embarks on his next adventure."

Bond reunites Pascal with Amazon MGM Studios. She is currently in post-production on the studio’s upcoming Phil Lord- and Christopher Miller-directed Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, which the studio is releasing on March 20, 2026.

Pascal is best known for her work on the Spider-Man franchise, serving as a producer on the last three Spider-Man movies, starring Tom Holland, with Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, starting production this summer.

David Heyman produced all eight film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, as well as the three Fantastic Beasts films. Among his other credits are Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... in HollywoodMarriage StoryGravityBarbiePaddingtonPaddington 2, and Wonka.

It was recently reported that Rebel Ridge and Lanterns star Aaron Pierre is being eyed to play the next James Bond. However, a decision may not be made until a writer and director are found. It may also be tricky for him to balance Bond with his DCU commitments as John Stewart.

As always, keep checking back here for updates as we have them.

Paul King is an odd one on the list but otherwise not a bad bunch to choose from, heck King isn't a bad director at all just not known for anything like a spy thriller thus deffo the odd one out.

If true then that’s an truly electic mix of names honestly….

I mean imagine a Paul King (Paddington 1 & 2 , Wonka) directing a Bond film?

Honestly , I kinda want to see it now just for the sake of curiosity lol.

An Edgar Wright Bond could be fun and Jonathan Nolan is an interesting choice because outside of his collaborations with his brother , he’s mainly made a name for himself in television with Person of Interest (which tonally could be a fitting template for Bond perhaps) , Westworld and Fallout.

I don’t see Villeneuve getting it tbh so I think Edward Berger might be the best fit tbh given his work so I hope he gets it.

Villeneuve would be a great choice, the man has an eye for cinematic action.

Goodness gracious have I avoided this ban hammer 🔨.

Should I have gotten one a while back but some of these editors have been too scared to move forward with any discipline.

So far...

Yikes, that's what no comment moderation gets you ⬆️

Anyway, I'd prefer Westworld and Fallout over most of Chris Nolan's solo stuff (especially Tenet) so the slam against Jonathan Nolan seems unnecessary, he'd be a fantastic pick

@Luigi - Jonathan Nolan would be great. But for Bond? Chris Nolan would be better.

Paul King is an odd choice in that list, the tone of his work is vastly different from the rest. He's a fantastic artist, but I'd expect something closer to the sillier Moore era while the others I can see keeping to that Dalton-Craig darker edge and realism.

@1stDalek - King's solid, but vanilla. You can always get him later. Best to start things strong.
