Star Wars Episode X Rumors Tease Romance-Focused Story, Sequel Trilogy Returns, And More Spoilers

Star Wars Episode X may be taking a very different direction than expected, with new rumours pointing to a romance-driven story, returning sequel trilogy characters, and ideas from the scrapped Rey movie.

Star Wars Episode X looks set to continue the Skywalker Saga, though we're still not entirely sure what that's going to look like. Some early details were recently revealed for the movie set to be written by Simon Kinberg (Dark Phoenix) and directed by Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and we now have some additional insights.

As we first shared on SFFGazette.com, insider Daniel Richtman has weighed in, revealing that Lucasfilm intends to bring back more characters from the Star Wars sequel trilogy for future movies—including this one—potentially in smaller roles.

He also explains that the studio (now run by Dave Filoni following Kathleen Kennedy's departure) wants Episode X to feel more along the lines of the original Star Wars trilogy. This likely means it will be more Skeleton Crew than The Acolyte in tone and approach.

Star Wars leaker @fiveswalker has also shared a few updates, reiterating that the movie's leads will be in their early 20s with a "heavy" focus on their romance. In fact, that will be one of the movie's "key definers." Apparently, it's very Young Adult-oriented, but "very good," so Lucasfilm may be looking to tap into the audience drawn to The Hunger Games, for example.

Of course, a casualty of Episode X is the long-delayed New Jedi Order movie revolving around Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker. Interestingly, it seems at least some of the ideas from that have carried over to this follow-up to The Rise of Skywalker...

It's not hugely surprising that the plot of a movie which was once going to bridge the gap between the two trilogies has now been incorporated into Episode X. It's also been reported by the trades that Ridley will be back in some capacity as Rey for this story. The question is, will scrapped plans for The Hunt for Ben Solo also be folded into the next trilogy?

The leaker later added, "So no, 'New Jedi Order' is no longer happening. It's been dead for quite a while. From what I know, I think we will get far more of the Rebels-quality Kinberg and not the Dark Phoenix Kinberg. I am excited."

Watts is no stranger to Star Wars. He developed and directed episodes of Disney+'s Skeleton Crew, which holds a 92% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The filmmaker also has blockbuster experience, having helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home for Marvel Studios.

Kinberg's track record isn't quite as good. He wrote the Oscar-nominated Ridley Scott film The Martian, but is also responsible for duds like X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four, and Dark Phoenix.

Stay tuned for updates on Star Wars Episode X as we have them.

@RKSDooM - this isn’t going to make a billion dollars, this is at best Solo territory. There’s no hype or excitement for Star Wars or these characters.

There is absolutely no winning with SW these days. There won’t be anymore blockbusters or event movies. It’s over. They should throw the franchise into the public domain and let anyone take a shot at something original. That is how you can keep it relevant.

I wish Filoni was doing something noticable even if it was kinda terrible like James Gunn just something different

Romance , ewww I don’t like that girly shit is something I’m sure many will say or insinuate on this comment thread but we’ll see.

Anyway given that the main lead seems like he is going to be “rough around the edges” and that they might plan to bring some of the sequel trilogy characters back in small roles , i would love to get more of DJ , Zori Bliss and/or Maz Kanata in these films…

Regardless , Simon Kinberg’s track record is a mixed bag at best but if he & Filoni as the creative head of Lucasfilm can channel
the energy they had working on Star Wars:Rebels to this then i feel we can get some good stuff with this apparent new trilogy!!.

Josh, this is the second article where I've seen you state that Simon Kinberg wrote the screenplay for the Martian. Drew Goddard wrote that screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar for it.

Yeah , Goddard wrote it and Kinberg helped produce it.

Oh so that’s why it was good. My opinion of Kinberg went up a notch, just one mind you when I was under the impression that he wrote it . The movie was an excellent adaptation of the book.

@RolandD - yeah , that’s a solid film as is Project Hail Mary imo which is another one written by Drew Goddard and adapted from an Andy Weir novel.

Kinberg has produced a lot of good movies and shows , it’s him as a writer that can go either way or in the middle.

This is no longer the Skywalker saga, they are all dead, and Rey isn't a Skywalker. Romance heavy in Star Wars sounds horrible too. The romance between Han and Leia was about as deep as Star Wars needs to go. Keep it light and organic. But none is going to do a good job writing a romance heavy element into a SW movie. And Bringing ST characters back for further movies sounds like a disaster. They should have just time-jumped ahead several decades and have a young Jedi Mandalorian Grogu be the new lead and have a completely new and separated story away from Episodes 1-9.

@LilJimmy - By letting a bunch of neo-feminists/cultural Marxists run Disney. In other words, by ripping the balls off Star Wars.

The romance between Han and Leia worked because it was Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, that means you could NEVER replicate that, like EVER!!! It will never be the same, you won’t EVER capture that magic again.

You have to write a masterpiece script for all three films, the perfect cast, like the OT, and everything has to align perfectly. Good luck with that.

Need to go back before they can go forward. Dawn of the Jedi was the best concept they haven't moved forward on.

They need to move in a whole new direction. Bring in a new alien threat from outside the galaxy, like the Yuzzhan Vong from the old books.

Simon Kinberg?

Really?

Tell you what, Mouse house. Send me a copy of the final draft. The night it arrives I'll order a quality Biryani from the best Indian takeaway in town. None of your muck.

Then, I'll wash it down with a four pack of vintage Henry Westons. 8.5 percent. The finest Somerset gutrot.

Finally, for desert i'll have a profiterole mountain laced with milk of magnesia.

I'll give it all a bit of a brew for a couple of hours and when it's ready, I'll roll the script up nice and tight and shove it firmly up my bravely willing and puckered arsehole.

As the volatile cacophony of the unholy finally exits my innocent bowel, it'll crash its way through the centre of the rolled up script, soaking through the tightly wound layers as it goes.

Once the procedure is complete, and once I've received my insurance payments, I shall return the much improved script to you, post haste.

And, you're most welcome.

@Kahron0 - I don’t think this is a part of that saga but just a new trilogy…

Trades have apparently been just reporting it as Ep 10 but it’s suppose to just be a new chapter apparently going by scoopers but that can be dubious so we’ll see.

Star Wars deserves to fail after Lucas literally gave Iger a finished sequel trilogy, only for him to throw them in the trash for that JJ Abrams/Rian Johnson [frick]ed up hodgepodge. Now that Dave is in charge, I'm more hopeful. Talentless producers think they're talented (Feige) when they're literally there to just sign the [frick]ing check.

@bobevanz -

Kennedy in the Hollywood Reporter:

She recalled asking Star Wars creator Lucas, after he handpicked her as his successor at the company, if he had any material she should look at for direction on storytelling.

He [Lucas] said, ‘No, no, it’s all here,’” she said, pointing to her head. “I said, okay, well that’s going to be interesting to try and mine that.” (She added that she received “a couple of paragraphs” with story ideas, but no story treatments.)

I really hope that James Mangold “Dawn of The Jedi” is still happening…

A biblical epic about the discovery of The Force and creation of The Jedi Order sounds really interesting and the SW project that appeals to me the most as of now tbh!!.
