Matthew Vaughn Will Helm Spy Thriller I AM PILGRIM; What Does This Mean For KINGSMAN 2?

MGM will be teaming up with the very talented Kingsman: The Secret Service & X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn to bring Terry Hayes' best-selling espionage thriller I Am Pilgrim to the big screen. But what does this mean for Kingsman 2? Read on for more...

Matthew Vaughn is making another spy movie! Hot off finding strong commercial success with Kingsman: The Secret Service earlier this year, the popular British director is set to helm a big screen adaptation of Terry Hayes' espionage thriller I Am Pilgrim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will also produce the film, based on a script adapted by Hayes himself. Apparently, MGM view this as a potential franchise, and production will begin in 2016.

Per THR, the story follows “Pilgrim,” code name for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for U.S. intelligence. Now in anonymous retirement, he is called upon to lend his expertise to an unusual investigation but ultimately becomes caught in a terrifying race against time to save America from a cunning terrorist.

But what does this mean for Kingsman 2? Last we heard Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman were hard at work writing the sequel, with the former potentially directing too. This development would appear to throw a spanner in the works there, with production on I Am Pilgrim set to begin next year. This wouldn't be the first time Vaughn's passed up the opportunity to direct a sequel in favor of something more original - having declined to direct both Kick-Ass 2 & X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

However, Vaughn's frequent partner in crime and original Kingsman writer Mark Millar seems to think he'll have time to helm the sequel first - tweeting out this in response to the news:

Which movie would you like to see Vaughn tackle first? I Am Pilgrim or Kingsman 2? As always, be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the comments below!

Would suck if this impacted Kingsman negatively, but I'm glad to see Vaughn get his hands on another espionage franchise. What he did with Kingsman shows how knowledgeable he is about the spy genre. I'm just excited to see him getting more high profile work as I believe he's one of the most underrated directors today.

If only he would do a sequel

Matthew Vaughn is probably the least dependable franchise director in history.

Kingsman will be pushed to the side for a different director, I can feel it

I honestly thought the thumbnail was Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock.

I'm not very bright.

Matthew Vaughn getting a job directing another franchise while he is doing a sequel and thus he will end up leaving the sequel? What a [frick]ing surprise, if you arn't going to do sequels stop saying you're going to do them Vaughn jeez, this is like the 3rd [frick]ing time now. I love ya Vaughn, but this has got to stop.

If only he would stick around for sequels. DOFP turned out well, so him not coming back on that one wasn't a big deal. But Kick-Ass 2 definitely suffered. If he had done that one, we might have actually gotten a third movie.

And sure millar says he'll have time to do the sequel, but come on. He won't, they thought the same thing with DOFP and that didn't happen. I'm not getting my hopes up for him doing kingsman 2

Be aware, he still has Kingsman 2 on his plate and has already started writing a Hit Girl solo and Kick-Ass 3.

I think Vaughn is trying to be the new Guillermo Del Toro with how many projects he'll start but never finish.

Maybe he should clone himself, at least twice. That way Vaughn clone 1 could direct whatever the next Kick-Ass movie is (I read something about a Hit-Girl prequel happening), Vaughn clone 2 could direct Secret Service 2 and original Vaughn could direct I Am Pilgrim. He's that good a director multiple versions of him would be awesome.

Joking aside it's great he's doing another spy movie...hmmmmmm talking of the spy genre, I wonder if he would consider doing a Bond movie. (Maybe not because his movies are usually more humorous/crazy rather than being serious with realistic action, but then again this sounds like it 'may' be a more serious movie).

So basically Matthew Vaughn will become 'The Spy movies director' now?

@CallMeColossus - Disagree. Everything in the title is addressed in the article.

But in the end... who cares? You still clicked.

Starting to think Vaughn avoids Sequels .... Wish he stayed on directing Xmen. First Class was great.

Matthew Vaughn should have been the director for Marvel's Spider-Man.

Hopefully it means that it won't happen. Overrated tripe.

I personally am okay with this, because it allows him to not get stressed out for having to make sequel right away. Plus this gives another movie a chance to come out, where had he made the sequel instead this might never come out.

Now the real question is what studio will work with MGM on this movie? You'd think Sony because of James Bond, but I personally see this fitting more with WB.
