REAL STEEL TV Series In The Works At Disney+ From Original Director Shawn Levy

Fans have been clamouring for a Real Steel sequel of some sort for over a decade now, and it's now been revealed that a TV adaptation is in the works for Disney+ from original director Shawn Levy...

Deadline reports that Shawn Levy is returning to the world of Real Steel for a new Disney+ series. The 2011 movie starred Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, and Anthony Mackie, and followed a father and son who reconcile after year's apart as they train a junkyard robot to become a boxing champion.

Disney Branded Television, 20th Television, and Levy's 21 Laps are teaming on the show, and the hunt has begun for a writer. However, this untitled Real Steel follow-up has found a roster of executive producers in Levy, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Jacqueline Levine, Susan Montford and Don Murphy.

Since helming Real Steel, Levy has gone on to work on the likes of Stranger Things and Free Guy. Fans have never stopped sharing their hopes for a sequel of some sort, and the filmmaker recently revealed that since the movie started streaming on Netflix, it's found a new audience and that's left to him talking to Jackman about a sequel of some sort. That could be this TV series.

Either way, this is exciting news for fans and while it's still early days for the project, we're optimistic this could be the start of exciting things to come for the Real Steel franchise. There's a tonne of potential with the property, and regardless of whether it's a continuation or a new story set in that world, Disney will make a lot of fans very happy by revisiting this relatively obscure Fox property.

Check out what Brad Simonsen told us about his work as part of Real Steel's VFX team (when we caught up with him last year to discuss Disney Animation's Us Again) in the player below:

This is a fun movie that doesn’t get a lot of love. Much better than I expected when I first watched it.

@micvalpro - I hope we get some guest appearances from the Iron Legion...

It would be nice to see the full capabilities of Tony's suits.

@JonC - And if we don't get the actual Legion... maybe just robots inspired by the Legion.

Shawn Levy seems like another yes man, like a Bret Rattner but slightly better

I actually really enjoyed the original movie. It was a fun take on the conventional sport film genre. Bring it on!

I’m interested if they will follow Jackson and his son or if it will follow a new cast. I’m guessing the later.
