Sam Mendes Is Directing James Bond 23, Further Delays Preacher Adaptation

Well, from maybe no Bond 23 to a confirmed director. The man who is supposed to be giving us a Preacher movie will be busy with Mr Bond next...

MGM has announced (via Heat Vision) that Oscar winning filmmaker Sam Mendes, of American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, and Away We Go, has been hired to direct the upcoming 23rd James Bond movie. Despite recent concerns that the production was temporarily on hold, MGM is on track to release Bond 23 in late 2011. Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing the script along with Frost/Nixon writer Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will produce. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007.

Well, despite Mendes frequently reassuring comic fans that he will be directing Preacher as soon as possible, it seems he is full of shit quite frankly. Not only am I not in the slightest bit exited about another Bond, Im of the opinion that Mendes is a pretty terrible choice to direct one. He's a great director but not exactly known for his action movies, and isn't that what Bond is all about?

I know there are lots of Bland..sorry, Bond fans out there so I'm glad the movie is back on track for you..but I'm fuming at Mendes' involvement because of the delays(possible cancellation) it means for Preacher. Give Bond to Michael bay for Gods sake!

I'm with LEEE, Preacher has its odds stacked against it. To hell with the 23rd Bond film, lets see Preacher progress!

They need to bring back Q and some humor in Bond!
Just a little tasteful tongue-in-cheek humor will
turn it from too stuffy like the last Bond movie was!

Please give Bond back some of his dry humor style,
Mendes!

And for goodness sake (or should I say evil's sake)
hurry up and get Bond finished and get on the Preacher
project!

I hope Bay eats some poisonous mushrooms and
PERMANENTLY leaves movie-making alone! He has
no style or writing ability, just boom boom
and potty jokes with no soul!!!

i just finished reading Preacher book 1 today, and let me tell you, that is one awesomely twisted piece of work.....but i loved it. i couldn't put it down, work was slow today so i even read it when i should have been working. But i was a fan of the bond films before Preacher so i'm not to torn up about it not coming out for awhile.

Bay and bond don't belong in the same sentence. Bond is not about fast cars, faster women and 'splosions. He's a really great pulp style spy, and he has a lot of emotional depth. I think you're confusing the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnen movies with who Bond really is, and that's akin to saying that Shumacher's version of Batman is what the character is all about, it's just not true.

To deride an entire franchise because you'd rather see your personal favorite just seems kind of petulant to me. I mean, Hellboy is by far my favorite comic book, but you don't hear me saying that the Hobbit should be left to Bay because Del Torro needs to come out with the conclusion of his Hellboy Story arch.

Personally, Mendes is an amazing choice for the next Bond film, I mean how can you not watch Road to Perdition(which Daniel Craig was in)and not think that this guy could deliver both the action and the emotional complexity that is Bond.

This may not be a bad thing.

I dug the shit outta Casino but never saw Quantum. Heard mixed mehs from it so I haven't gotten around to it. Sam could pull this off nicely, sucks for Preacher, but let's be honest it needs to be a series not a movie. Maybe SHOWTIME? HBO has it's True Blood, that's probably why they scrapped it in the first place. Showtime could use a show like this, and they have the ability to do it right. Dexter is the shit but it won't last forever.

Ror01 - Bay already has his next film

Here is a production still

Well dude, thats my opinion. I don't see any emotional complexity to Bond at all. Any movie I have seen is just the same smarmy misogynist git doing the same stunts, with gadgets, women and yes..splosions, Add some cheesy as [frick] one liners and you have [frick]ing kryptonite to me. Im not deriding it because I want Preacher more, Im deriding it because I think its shit. If you disliked The Hobbit as much as I disliked Bond, wouldn't you be pissed off that he wasn't making Hellboy 3 instead? Maybe their is more to the character from the books..I wouldn't go within a million miles of one to find out, but ALL of the Bond movies suck except for Casino Royale as far as I'm concerned...and that good work was flushed down the drain with Quantum Of Bollocks.

And, like I said in the article, Im happy that the Bond fans are getting another movie, Im just pissed that Mendes is the man behind it. I was joking about Bay, I wouldn't wish him on the next frakking Twilight movie!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 1/5/2010, 6:33 PM
[frick] Preacher - I care more about Bond than that, lol!

I actually enjoyed Quantum of Solace just as much as Casino Royale, and as someone who loves the original books its great to see the latest movies being more faithful to them rather than all that invisible car crap!
thegamedrex
thegamedrex - 1/5/2010, 6:34 PM
i am a james bond fan, no matter if it seems the same or not, i love this shit, bond will be banging chicks into the next millennium giggidy gig gigidy gig gentlemen. and what the hell is preacher, somethings are just not good enough preacher is probably just that.
someone give me a short rundown of preacher to give accurate assessment of?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/5/2010, 6:40 PM
A short run down doesn't allow for an accurate assessment, go read it, its only one of the greatest comics ever written.

Seriously, I get that Bond is the ultimate male fantasy, I get the appeal of the cars and the suits and the chicks..but we have had 22 movies now and every [frick]ing one of them follows the exact same formula! How can you not get bored with that?

Oh look, theres 007, isn't he cool in his tux? I wonder what he will order at the bar? Oh look, an unfeasibly hot girl ..will he shag her? Will she survive!!! Oh the possibilities!!!..And the biggest surprise, will he best the foreign/facially scarred/both bad guy..oh my nerves, Im on th edge of my seat!!..Oh, he won,, again....ah well, Next!
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 1/5/2010, 6:43 PM
Same here josh, I liked Quantum of Solace. I do however understand why some people didn't enjoy it...but still it was far from just pretty girls and splosions...I mean that was why people didn't like it because it specifically lacked many of those things...it was more about the emotional impact of taking a life than anything else and I really liked that. It was a really good adaption of the novel and I think Mendes will continue in that vain.

And even if I hated the Hobbit I still wouldn't deride it because it was stalling Hellboy, because I respect Del Torro and I know that no matter what choice he makes that I'm going to get an awesome movie. And it's the same here, if tommorow they announced that Mendes was doing preacher instead of bond I'd respect that because the guy makes great movies.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/5/2010, 6:46 PM

ror@ i understand your point. although casino and quantum are radical departures from the older style, it can get stale. but i have sex with my wife like 5 times a week and it hasnt gotten stale yet, so sometimes its ok :)
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/5/2010, 6:52 PM
Casino, I agree, that was a departure and it really entertained me. But I thought Quantum, although certainly better than the previous Brosnan muck, was still very formulaic. I mean even with Casino, you have the liked of Bourne out there doing it even better:)

Good for you Guardian!:) Seriously though, Im just pissed of at him talking shit and saying he's definitely going to make it and then [frick]ing around with Bond of all things. Maybe your just more patient than me.
superdog
superdog - 1/5/2010, 6:58 PM
bourne is definately the reason they made casino the way they did. updating the character to be more like that. brosnans first couple of go's were ok, then it got very roger moore like. i see your point, but i like the craig ones. quantum was a bit of a let down after casino (eva green is sooooo hot), but im definately down for another one.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 1/5/2010, 7:06 PM
I've always thought the Bourne comparison to be a little funny, it's like claiming that deadpool is an original character even though he was admittedly based on deathstroke, Bourne was created to be an American James Bond. So it seems natural then that when updating the bond series in a post bourne movie world that you'd necessarily have similar techniques in stunts and cinematography.

And ror, I understand the your frustration man, preacher has been off and on again for more than ten years now. It's crazy.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 1/5/2010, 7:08 PM
Although I think that the older movies became incredibly stale and cliched, I think that the past two have been brilliant! Ok, so we can all go into the cinema and not be all that suprised by what we're going to see but that doesnt overshadow the fact that they're still well made, enjoyable movies! Yes we know that Bond will win the day and het the girl but the same goes for the majority of other movies of this type out there!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/5/2010, 7:10 PM
Maybe Bourne was created with Bond in mind, Iv never read either series of books. All I know is, his movies are good. And, after the Bourne movies, the Bond movies dropped the cheese and the silly shit and became much more gritty. It wasn't just about the stunts and stuff.

Josh , thats true, but then again im not a big fan of those other movies either! Bourne was different for me though because I really didn't know anything about how many books there were or any of that and the way they were structured, especially the second one, really kept you guessing right until the end. Bourne is not some suave, womanizing tux, he's a dangerous, emotionally scarred weapon. That tens to make for more entertainment for mw than shaken not stirred ever will.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 1/5/2010, 7:21 PM
An emotionally scarred weapon is exactly what Bond is though, that's where Bourne gets it from. Also the name was supposed to be a homage to Bond, Jason Bourne...James Bond, it wasn't a coincidence any more than deadpool being named wade wilson was.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 1/5/2010, 7:22 PM
ROR: I'm not going to argue with you there - though I really like the Bond movies (the past two more than the fun but sometimes chessy/sometimes crap older ones) I'd say that the Bourne movies were much better than the current Bond films for the very reasons you describe! :)

sigh...arguements like this are so immature. its easy 4 us to sit at the keyboards and kill a franchise. its not like we could make better movies when we are handed the cameras. Daniel craig's bond is great and the best. its making money, and attracting a new fanbase so lets leave it at that.
its amazing how we will pay cash to go watch a movie u've decided to hate. love it or hate it, bond will return!

If they make another Bond film I hope Craig stops his emotional crap and brings class. I understand why Royale was the way it was but now that he's 007 he needs to start acting like it. Bring Q. I want a Fraking gadget!!
DDD
DDD - 1/6/2010, 6:05 AM
Yeah, Hannibal@ they need to bring Q in.
He doesn't have to be totally nebbish like
in the old Bonds, make him more realistic
and make the gadgets more realistic, like
that phone gizmo in Casino Royale!

As long as it's an improvement over Quantum of Solace. Sam Mendes is a great director, and if the screenwriters get the story right this time around, I know that bond 23 will be terrific.

Love your new avatar bro. Swing away, lunch box. ^_^

I think part of the appeal of a Bond movie is in it's reliable story points. It can also be perceived as a negative, but the fans of such work go to see Bond kick some ass, bang the hottie, and save the day. In much the same way men flocked to nearly every one of Arnold's action vehicles. Nobody went in there wondering if Arnie was going to make it this time. You knew damn well what you were getting... and you loved it. Not that it's gonna be everyone's bag, so Ror01 has every right to be pissed about this. Especially since it's at the expense of a project he (and many others) are quite passionate about.

In the end, this may be the best thing that could've happened.
