Sir Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR 2 Gets A Pre-Thanksgiving 2024 Release Date

The long-awaited Gladiator sequel is one step closer to becoming a reality as Paramount has dated the movie for a pre-Thanksgiving release in theaters. Find more details on that, and the story, here...

2000's Gladiator was a massive hit, grossing $460.5 million at the worldwide box office and earning five Academy Awards (among countless other accolades), including "Best Picture" and "Best Actor" for Russell Crowe.

Recently, Crowe confirmed that he won't be part of Sir Ridley Scott's sequel, though anyone who has actually watched the epic blockbuster shouldn't be too surprised by that news (even after rumours to the contrary). Instead, Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal is in talks to play the movie's lead character.

He won't be replacing Crowe as Maximus, though; instead, this is a true sequel, with Mescal eyed to play Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen's Lucilla. The nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), and son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius, who was murdered by his brother so he could seize the throne, the character is one we first met as a child.

Maximus eventually killed Commodus, earning his revenge for the death of his wife and son before joining them in the afterlife. He also rescued Lucilla and Lucius, so we're sure the fallen hero's presence will be felt in other ways even without Crowe making a physical appearance.

It's an exciting premise, and one we don't have too much longer until getting to see. Deadline (via ActioNewz.com) is reporting that Gladiator 2 is set to be released in theaters on November 22, 2024! Yes, that is indeed nearly a decade-and-a-half after the first instalment.

Scott produces with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher from a screenplay by David Scarpa.

November 22 is the weekend before Thanksgiving in 2024, and no other tentpoles are scheduled for that date at this time. There is an untitled Disney Animation movie coming on November 27, but the Gladiator sequel stands a good chance of dominating the box office over a few weekends.

While some might argue that it would make sense for Crowe to play a supporting role as Maximus Decimus Meridius for the marketing potential alone, focusing on a new set of characters and dealing with the legacy of Commodus and Maximus is bound to lead to a vastly more interesting story than if the latter was somehow resurrected.

Kinda wish they didn't say this was a sequel. Think it would work a lot better without any previously known connection.

I love gladiator. It was one of my favorite movies, but I really don’t think it warrants a sequel. Seems like they are just using the name for marketing purposes. It should just be a stand alone movie with a similar title but not a direct sequel. Still could be an interesting movie though. Heres hoping it’s good

@Shivermetimbers - thinking more about it, maybe they call it Legacy of the Gladiator or something like that. I guess it could work

@Shivermetimbers - or do like they did with Alien and call the sequel Gladiators.

They should set it 100 years after the first movie and call it something else.

I'm 100 percent POSITIVE that they will hjre "PROGESSIVE" writers and announce that this sequel fully represent and is made for LGBTQ people. Thereby alienating those of us who aren't

I loved the first movie, but I wish Hollywood would start using the phrase “loosely based on historical events.” It’s not as bad as Braveheart for historical accuracy (I know a history teacher in the UK who debunked the movie for a curriculum unit), but Gladiator is largely fiction. I’m certain that this sequel will be entirely fabricated, and I can play along if they cop to it.

My zeal for the original makes me highly skeptical. The plot, the dialogue, thecinematography, the choreography, the Per4mances, the MUSIC!
...Big act to follow.
Ridley Scott is a great world-builder, though. Still one of my very favourite directors

I will watch this. If it sucks, I'll just have to hunt down the people responsible and feed them to hungry weasels.

This man is 85 years-old and has been cranking out movie after movie for years. That's some work ethic. He and Eastwood deserve to sit back and put their feet up for a day.
