The Uprising Starring Andrew Garfield Has Been Unveiled As A Robin Hood Origin Movie

Focus Features has announced that The Uprising will actually serve as a Robin Hood origin story, with Andrew Garfield starring as the legendary bow-wielding outlaw...

Fans thought the first trailer for The Uprising looked a lot like a Robin Hood movie... because it is a Robin Hood movie!

Ahead of its September 10 release, Focus Features has announced that the Paul Greengrass-directed film is now titled The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood, with Andrew Garfield starring as the legendary British outlaw.

The movie was initially marketed as a retelling of the true events surrounding the 1381 English Peasants’ Revolt against King Richard II, which sprang from the oppressive taxes and feudal restrictions enforced during his reign. It seems the story will merge fact and fiction.

The updated synopsis reads: “Set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood. [Garfield’s character] forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.”

We assume the Robin Hood reveal was originally going to be saved as a surprise, and Focus Features figured giving the twist away might get more butts in seats. The decision could pay off, although the studio might be vastly overestimating Mr. Hood's drawing power.

Garfield spoke about the movie in a recent Esquire interview.

“The truth of that period of time was that there were brutal conditions for working-class people, brutal taxation post-plague, incompetence in government, abusive practices, with the underclass being seen as sub-human creatures from the perspective of those in power.”

“One of the things that’s cool about this film is that it’s a bit of a Rorschach Test,” he continued. “A lot of differently politically aligned people will go, ‘Oh, it’s me!’ We get into really dicey territory — and to not see the [British far-right activist] Tommy Robinson stuff as anything but despicable is just ignorant — but I’m sure a bunch of people will look at this film and go, ‘England first! What about us?’ It’ll be very interesting in that regard.”

The supporting cast features Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot; Snowpiercer), Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones; The Hour), Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean; The White Lotus), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit; Last Night in Soho), Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting; Elementary), Woody Norman (C'mon C'mon; The Last Voyage of the Demeter), Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Inherent Vice), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon; Halo), and Cosmo Jarvis (Shōgun; Lady Macbeth) as real-life rebel leader Wat Tyler.

A Robinhood movie that comes out in less than a month that we're only hearing about now? Not a good sign.

@alleverybody - It’s a really odd lack of marketing. It’s funny though because when I first saw this I thought it looked like a Robin Hood riff. Turns out it actually is a Robin Hood film. I’ll probably catch it on streaming eventually

@BruceWayng - such a waste it was, dark knight awesome, rises unfortunately fell very flat for me personally. And now Gunn wanting to jump straight to damien is lame also, can we just get a good Batman with normal natural progression smh

@BruceWayng - I always wondered if Nolan wrote a version of this scene where she says "I like that name... Dick." And realized the general audience would not even remotely understand lol

@cjspade - Agreed. Rises had its moments but it also had many missteps and the cracks stared to show. And if you’re going to do Robin have the stones to do Robin and not an older proto Robin with zero training from Batman.

@cjspade - my biggest complaint about Rises is when Bruce comes back to Gotham (just in time by the way) and he’s talking to Selina in his Batman voice. I was thinking the entire time, “she knows who you are. Use your normal voice”

Bale’s voice in those movies is atrocious

@BruceWayng - As much as I love TDK trilogy, I literally did the biggest physical involuntary eye roll I possibly could during that reveal LOL. I mean, I know what they were going for, but I feel like it came across a little bit too cheesy. I was half expecting him to turn to the camera and give the audience a wink.

They just can’t seem to get Robin Hood right these days. He’s supposed to be a fun action adventure hero, and the last 2 films seem pretty dark. Which is a shame because we know from his portrayal of Spider-Man that Garfield would be terrific as a more traditional interpretation of Robin Hood.

@Huskers - I loved The Death of Robin Hood, but it's best to view it as an "Elseworlds" type story since it strips every ounce of heroism and decency from the character.

@MarkCassidy - I also loved it. It was a totally different take on Robin Hood and Jackman was great as always.
The beginning was brutal, but i loved how he looked back at his brutal past once he came to rest and regretted it.

Did anybody see that Hugh Jackman Robin Hood movie? Is it any good? I haven’t heard a word about it since the trailer dropped.

@WruceBayne - It's a good film, but don't go in expecting a Robin Hood movie, for whatever it's worth. Detach your expectations and it's a fine character drama, about a dying man.

@UnderBelly - the original title of the film was “Hood.”

So…it appears you are completely wrong.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 8/26/2026, 12:26 PM
@Rpendo - You’re right about the title shift, but—it’s pure marketing desperation.

Slapping Rise of Robin Hood onto The Uprising (originally The Hood) right before release is a textbook studio play to boost cold tracking for a mid-budget historical drama.

The movie is set in the same period, sure, but is actually a grounded take on the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, which was led by historical figures like Wat Tyler—not a guy in green tights. And "Robin Hood" wasn't a real person or surname, but a generic legal alias medieval courts slapped on outlaws and fugitives around that 14th-century.

The plot is just framing the movie characters actions as the event that inspired the myth. We aren't getting a traditional archer movie; at most, we'll get a two-second nod at the end right before the credits roll. Anyone buying a ticket for a superhero-style Robin Hood flick is in for a reality check.
Rpendo
Rpendo - 8/26/2026, 12:37 PM
@UnderBelly - 100 percent in agreement about marketing desperation.

However…” He's not in the movie nor was he intended to be.”

He is in the movie, and was always intended to be so. The marketing is pretty clear that this is a gritty, earthbound flick about a peasant revolution. It just also happens to be an origin story for Robin Hood, too. I would have been plenty happy to see the film and be surprised at the end if that was when they started to call him “Robin Hood.” I hate when studios do this, as it generally indicates they don’t have faith in the film finding an audience based on its own merits.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 8/26/2026, 1:16 PM
@Rpendo - Maybe both can be true..until we've seen for ourselves. But until then, Gemini answered the question, as follows

"Is Robin Hood in the movie"

Yes and no—it depends on whether you mean the actual legendary character or the marketing pitch.
In the actual movie: No, there is no traditional Robin Hood character. Andrew Garfield plays an original figure named "Ploughman" leading the 1381 Peasants' Revolt alongside historical rebels like Wat Tyler (played by Cosmo Jarvis) and John Ball (Jamie Bell). The story is framed as the real-world historical rebellion that inspired the medieval folklore surrounding outlaws like Robin Hood.
In the studio marketing: Yes. Focus Features updated the title to The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood and pivoted the marketing to explicitly sell Garfield’s character as the origin story behind the legend.
So while the studio is slapping Robin Hood on the poster to drive box-office interest, the film itself is a grounded historical drama about the Peasants' Revolt rather than a traditional Robin Hood adventure.
