TOP GUN: MAVERICK Director Joseph Kosinski Is Optimistic A Sequel Could Happen...With The Right Story

Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski seems confident a third movie could happen, but explains that the only way he would return for that is if he and Tom Cruise can find a story that's worth telling.

Despite facing stiff competition from movies like The Batman and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Top Gun: Maverick looks set to remain the year's highest-grossing title.

With a massive $1.4 billion haul worldwide, the blockbuster also recently passed Avengers: Infinity War to cement its status as the sixth highest-earning movie of all time in North America. Of course, it helps that anticipation for the sequel was incredibly high prior to its release, no great surprise after fans were forced to wait 35 years for a follow-up to 1986's Top Gun

Reviews were also overwhelmingly positive, and there are rumblings online that it could receive a "Best Picture" nod at next year's Academy Awards (which is looking more likely after those Golden Globe nominations). In terms of box office, Avatar: The Way of Water might be able to top it, though much of its money will likely be earned in 2023.

In terms of whether another Top Gun movie could happen, there's currently no official word on a threequel. Talking to Deadline (via ActioNewz.com), however, director Joseph Kosinski made it clear that he would be down for it, provided he can find a story worth telling.

"Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back?" the filmmaker asked, adding: "It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank. He’s not settling down."

We're confident Tom Cruise would jump at the chance to return, especially as Top Gun: Maverick is easily the biggest movie of his career. The actor likes to break records (usually through daredevil stunts), and any sort of follow-up stands a good chance of being every bit as successful, if not more so, even if many moviegoers have already had their nostalgia fix.

We'll see what happens, but have to believe ideas are already being thrown around for a third instalment that picks up with Maverick and that newly introduced younger cast.

Top Gun: Maverick is now available to watch on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, and Digital platforms.

The only way they could pull it off again, would involve the greatest sacrifice from Maverick. I guess it'll come down to Tom Cruise wanting to pass the torch. Seems doubtful. Miles Teller needs more roles! Whiplash was top notch! And he was initially going to be in La La Land, but Ryan Gosling has to get in the way lol

I got the perfect story for you, Joe.

Tom Cruise is an air test pilot who moonlights as space cop with a green power ring. Go.

@ObserverIO - He may not look like it, but he's too old for a franchise like that.

@Urubrodi - Tell that to the star of Top Gun: Maverick and the continuing Mission Impossible series.

'sides it could be a one and done, passing the mantle to John Stewart.

@ObserverIO - cruise makes more sense than anyone for that role but i don't think he'd want to give up the creative control that him and mcq have at paramount rn

@ObserverIO - If it was a one done then yeah, it could work, but I feel like Hal is too important to get sidelined after one movie.

The last one was a flawless movie, my favourite of the year, I hope they don't tarnish the franchise by milking a great thing. I think the obvious direction is for Maverick to retire.

maverick was incredible, but a sequel is just too much of a highwire act to get right. another kosinski/mcq/cruise joint would rock though - pretty much all the cruise/mcq projects in development right now sound like heat

The movie was done just right: it ended just right.
Don’t screw it up with some ham fisted sequel money grab.

Could they make a movie around the younger pilots?
Yes, but they were pulled together to do this special mission one time.

Could they be pulled together for another mission?
Yes, but it could be like Creed II. Creed was a very nice film and a good story that found a way to revisit the universe while using Stallone realistically to carry it forward.
The most interesting part of Creed II was Drago’s storyline which would have made the better film. Besides that that movie was lackluster and was just made as a money grab.

The characters in Creed outside of Rocky and Drago weren’t interesting enough to lead their own movie. The only character from Maverick that would be of interest would be Rooster and maybe Hangman in some capacity.
But I just don’t see them as interesting enough to headline a movie alone.

Maverick was the heart of the story and had the arc that we wanted to follow.
Rocky Balboa was the heart of Creed and Stallone was nominated for and won a Golden Globe for his efforts.
Just because Maverick is nominated for awards…does no t mean we need to see more,

Sometimes Hollywood needs to leave perfect alone no matter how much money they could make,

Nah. This movie was a perfect farewell to Maverick. Don't taint it.
