Guess we won't be seeing you space cowboy, as it's being widely reported that Netflix has canceled the live-action Cowboy Bebop series after just one season - less than three weeks after its long-awaited November launch.

It's unclear why the high-profile show was so swiftly axed, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that while it made a strong debut by garnering over 74 million viewing hours since November 19, it failed to maintain any significant interest in subsequent weeks, dropping 59% in total viewership for the week of Nov. 29-Dec. 5, according to Netflix Top 10 statistics.

The show's less than favorable critical reception (46% on review aggregator RottenTomatoes) combined with a similarly underwhelming fan response (54% on RT) likely did its renewal odds no favors, either, as the show's many deviations from the source material proved to be extremely divisive amongst fans of the original anime series.

The series starred John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine; three bounty hunters who find themselves bound together as they each try to escape their own respective troubled pasts.

In his review, ComicBookMovie's Mark Cassidy said, "Like its ragtag protagonists, Cowboy Bebop is a little rough around the edges, but also eminently entertaining and an absolute blast to spend time with. Netflix's adaptation doesn't quite recapture the anime's effortless cool, but it comes pretty damn close."

All ten episodes from the first and only season are currently available to stream on Netflix.

Yeah it all had a very unauthentic feel to it. Even the writing and acting, I never bought any of it as believable.

Departures from the source material aside, and forget about the difficulties in adapting an anime into live action, this was just a badly made show.

Yeah figured this is what would end up happening unfortunately…Some of the series felt like it jumped right out of the anime, while other stuff made it seem like the writers had no idea what the anime was…

Was kind of hoping that they’d course correct for a second season…

Why am I not surprised, here's hoping One Piece will fare better, but only time will tell and its arguably what I'm most looking forward too anyway.

@PantherKing - Never watched that Jupiter show but I thought it was better than that horrible Death Note “movie” they released…

The OG anime still exists so go watch that instead, it's on Crunchyroll AND Netflix so there's options.
And after that look up the movie, it's legit an underrated early 2000's animated classic.

this is one show people will not miss
want live action cowboy bebop watch

Pretty sure added up, you get around the same amount of screen time for both firefly and cowboy bebop
MrDandy
MrDandy - 12/9/2021, 9:12 PM
@dracula - Firefly is basically a successful Americanized and love-action take on Cowboy Bebop with stronger western esthetic instead of jazz.

@BillCipher - lol! I would be more interested in the Avatar series if it was an original idea based on that world. Making it a remake of the animation masterpiece is a huge mistake and I think it’ll be massively disappointing
