The critically-acclaimed Zootopia is now at $908 million worldwide. What an accomplishment! It joins the ranks of Shrek 2, Finding Nemo, Despicable Me 2, and The Lion King. It is now the third-highest grossing Disney animated film, behind The Lion King ($987 million) and Frozen ($1.276 billion). Zootopia is currently the highest grossing film of 2016, beating the fellow "blockbuster" Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (a weak $851 million) by more than $50 million! Quality matters.
Domestically, Zootopia had made $316 million with a multiplier of 4.2, even with "competition" from a fellow March "blockbuster"! Very strong box office legs! Still going strong after all these weeks and is expected to hit $340 million by the end of its domestic run.
The film also opened in Japan this weekend with $4 million. Disney animated films tend to do great in Japan, with Big Hero 6 making $76 million there and Frozen making a whopping $250 million there. Where Zootopia ends up with in Japan remains to be seen, but it is guranteed to hit $1 billion worldwide soon. With Zootopia, The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Finding Dory, Pete's Dragon, Doctor Strange, Moana, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney is going to have an amazing year at the box office!
