BOX OFFICE: ZOOTOPIA Crosses $900 Million Worldwide; Set To Hit $1 Billion Soon

The critically-acclaimed Zootopia is now at $908 million worldwide. What an accomplishment! It joins the ranks of Shrek 2Finding NemoDespicable Me 2, and The Lion King. It is now the third-highest grossing Disney animated film, behind The Lion King ($987 million) and Frozen ($1.276 billion). Zootopia is currently the highest grossing film of 2016, beating the fellow "blockbuster" Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (a weak $851 million) by more than $50 million!  Quality matters.

Domestically, Zootopia had made $316 million with a multiplier of 4.2, even with "competition" from a fellow March "blockbuster"! Very strong box office legs! Still going strong after all these weeks and is expected to hit $340 million by the end of its domestic run.

The film also opened in Japan this weekend with $4 million. Disney animated films tend to do great in Japan, with Big Hero 6 making $76 million there and Frozen making a whopping $250 million there. Where Zootopia ends up with in Japan remains to be seen, but it is guranteed to hit $1 billion worldwide soon. With ZootopiaThe Jungle BookCaptain America: Civil WarAlice Through the Looking GlassFinding DoryPete's DragonDoctor StrangeMoana, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney is going to have an amazing year at the box office!

Sound off below! What did YOU think of Zootopia?

How did I know @FrozenJoy wrote this article just by reading the headline?

Haha, good work! It's surpassed Batman v. Superman already LOL!

I wonder if it is better to have a slow roll out internationally rather than having your films open in every territory all together. It would seem that if it fails in one place you can adjust your marketing for future openings.

It seems invoking "BvS" in virtually any cbm related (or entirely unrelated) article is the equivalent of politicians invoking "9/11" during an election year.

This movie was incredible and hilarious. The animation and everything about it was gorgeous, deserves every penny plus some.

Didn't expect it to make such a huge splash in the box office. I thought it was going to make 700 million at most, and yet here we are with it expecting to reach the 1 billion mark. Congrats to the cast and crew behind this awesome movie.
