Skydance and Paramount Global officially completed their merger on August 7, 2025, and just over a year later, that new creation has now essentially acquired Warner Bros.
However, as part of a federal and state antitrust settlement, Paramount Skydance will be required to operate Warner Bros. as a separate entity for five years.
Once those 5 years are up, no one can really say with 100% certainty what will happen to Warner Bros., let alone its sub-studios like DC Studios and New Line Cinema.
DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran recently sat down for a chat with IGN to address concerns about the future of DC Studios, but in that conversation, he let slip that the two main leads for the upcoming Mister Miracle animated TV series have already been cast.
Per Safran, Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games, Five Nights at Freddy's) is playing Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven, Blade Runner 2049) is portraying Big Barda.
Safran specifically revealed, "I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns and he adapted his book Mr. Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it's just dynamite. Josh Hutcherson as Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda. And I just think it's a book that I've always loved and I remember Tom telling us early on that, every convention he goes to, at least a couple people come up to him and say this book saved my life and I love that we got to tell that story over eight episodes. "
Nearly 15 years after losing the role of Spider-Man to Andrew Garfield, Josh Hutcherson finally gets to play a superhero.
James Gunn previously confirmed on social media that the new animated series is officially part of the core DCU canon. That means everything fans see, from Darkseid to Apokolips and New Genesis, will directly shape the bigger storyline moving forward.
Tom King, who wrote the Eisner-winning comic book series that the show will draw inspiration from, wrote all of the episodes (8 in total). He is also the showrunner.
Back in December, King revealed that he was animating the series, so it seems the animated show is the furthest along out of all the in-development DCU projects and might be the first thing to be released after Man of Tomorrow.
King was also heavily involved with Lanters, serving as co-creator, writer, and executive producer.
The official logline for the series reads, "No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself?"
"Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father Darkseid seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation — the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe."
