Much to the chagrin of theater chains, streaming platforms are nabbing an ever growing list of exclusives, and CBS All Access will be getting The Spongebob Movie: Sponge of the Run early next year. Before it surfaces there, Paramount Pictures will be making it available on premium VOD platforms, and it's following in the footsteps of Warner Bros.' Scoob!

The movie was originally set to be released on the big screen on August 7th, but this move to CBS All Access is meant to help with the expansion and rebranding of the CBS All Access service.

"We are thrilled to have The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, a premiere, first-run movie from one of ViacomCBS' biggest brands, join CBS All Access’ expanding slate of franchise content from across ViacomCBS," said Marc DeBevoise, CEO of ViacomCBS Digital.

"This launch will be perfectly timed with our continued expansion and planned rebranding of the service in early 2021, as we welcome SpongeBob and the gang from Bikini Bottom to the service in the biggest way possible," he concludes.

"I’m incredibly proud of this film, and the phenomenal cast and filmmaking team that made it happen," said Mireille Soria, President of Paramount Animation. "Bringing this movie to life was a true collaboration and labor of love, and I’m thrilled for audiences to enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it."

Spongebob Squarepants fans are definitely excited for the movie, and while having to wait until next year is a shame, there are many who will welcome the chance to be able to watch it at home.

Even growing up was never really a spongebob fan, mainly watched it because of my brother. Only episodes I really enjoyed were the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes.

Although got to say, pretty [frick]ed up they are doing a prequel spin off show and announced it right after the creator died when the creator has was against any type of spin off

@dracula - big spongebob fan here, I do agree about how scummy what Nickelodeon is doing with this movie. It feels allot like Scoob when they replaced the voice cast with celebrities instead.

@dracula - the artstyle is strange but if it as good as you say, I'll check it out. Haven't been watching much cartoons since Gravity Falls and Gumball ended.

@dracula - One of the persons working on the show and film stated that the creator was well aware about the spin off plans when he was still alive, so its just poor timing, as this was gonna happen even if he was still alive.

Yes we also have that tweet of the guy who did directed the 2nd film, which is the one that has been running around, but according to the guy who posted the tweet about Stephen actually being aware stated that the other guy had not worked on the show for a while, so he wasnt there to see Stephen reaction about the spin off, when he was still alive.

For me, spongebob has ended in 2004 with the first movie, I'll include the second the movie just to be generous.
The fact that SpongeBob and the Simbsons are still running is rediculous.

@JustALurker - I think Sponge Out of Water was the better movie overall. They even tapped into some of that dark old school Nickelodeon humor.

@MosquitoFarmer - yeah it was fun, but the tv series on the otherhand lost most of its redeaming qualities long ago.

@JustALurker - Haven't checked in a while, but I think it was somewhere around the middle of season 3 where it started losing its luster for me. And that's a shame cause they had hit an amazing stride there for a while.

@DutchCipher - The first felt too much like trying to be a movie of a show, if that makes any sense. Still good, and yeah it made me cry when Spongebob and Patrick momentarily died, but the second felt closer to Hillenburg's earlier iterations.comedy of the character and earlier Nickelodeon (see: Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, etc.).

They announce this the game day battle for bikini bottom rehydrated comes out. Hopefully that is a good game and I'm hopeful this would be a good movie, although it doesn't look good to me personally

I get that they want to put it on SVOD, Trolls 2 was a pretty big hit, but why delay it to 2021? Now seems pretty optimal for families looking for new content
