Crave has an extensive chat with Bruce Timm along with producers Giancarlo Volpe and Jim Krieg, to talk about their upcoming CGI animated series, Green Lantern: The Animated Series. They discuss origins, the Red Lanterns, the reasons for it being produced in CGI, the reason for the absence of Sinestro and alot more.

Here's a couple of excerpts from the interview.

Even though Hal Jordan will be the main character, the animated series’ producers are taking a different approach with how the show kicks off. Specifically, Green Lantern: The Animated Series will not feature an origin story.

“We’re going to steer clear [of an origin]. We did it in New Frontier, we did it in First Flight, so we felt we didn’t need to do it again. We hit the ground running,” said Timm.

They go on to say how much of the show will be set on Earth and who the antagonists will be during the first Arc.

"Don’t expect a lot of costumeless shenanigans on Earth from the show either. Timm revealed that roughly 98% of the show takes place in space. Krieg supplemented that ballpark estimate with, “There will be less of him [Hal Jordan] playing tennis with Carol with a sweater tied around his shoulders.”

“You’re going to meet the Red Lanterns in the first episode. They’re going to be an eye-opener for all the Corps Green Lanterns,” revealed Krieg.

Moving on to the production aspect of the show, Timm, Krieg and Volpe detailed how the decision came down to develop the show completely in CGI, and whether or not it was the studio’s choice or their own.

“It was both,” said Timm. “It was something we’ve talked about doing for a long time and when the idea for this show came up my boss, Sam Register, made the decision for me. And I didn’t even have to fight him on it. It totally made sense. This is the perfect kind of show to do in CG because it takes place in outer space, it’s got alien environments and crazy alien people and we’re not going to be overly concerned with making it look “realistic.”

With the Green Lantern feature film coming out next year, Timm, Krieg and Volpe did elaborate on what not to expect from their animated series.

“We’re steering clear of Sinestro for the time being, because that’s a big part of what they’re going to be doing in the movie,” Timm was quick to response with. “And, without saying too much, that’s a big part of the arc they’ve got going in the films. So we wanted to stay away from that and avoid stepping on anything they plan to do, or anything that would contradict what they have planned. At least for the first 26 [episode] we won’t be dealing with him. We may allude to him, but we’re not sure yet.”

DLM: Green Lantern: The Animated Series is sure shaping up to be a great looking show. Hopefully, this will do for GL what Batman: The Animated Series did for Bats and with Bruce Timm at the Helm, the odds are looking pretty good.

Also, i'm very happy that we'll be seeing other parts of the GL universe in motion, as opposed to it always being about GLs origin and Sinestro all the time. Bring on the Black Lantern Corps :)
