While it may be a while before we get any new releases on physical home video, a number of studios have been re-releasing classic titles on 4K Ultra HD and it looks like Ghost in the Shell will be the latest to get the upgraded treatment.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced plans to release Mamoru Oshii's animated classic, which is based on the beloved manga from Japanese writer and illustrator Shirow Masamune, on the premium format on September 8.

The release will be completely remastered in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, with stunning commemorative artwork from pop illustrator Martin Ansin gracing the cover as well as a bevy of all-new special features, including an exclusive audio commentary and two brand new behind-the-scenes featurettes.

It found a voice… now it needs a body.

@HulkisHorny - It was ok, a half-decent way to start a franchise, but it watered down the philosophical questions & discussions of the franchise too much, specially as it was pretty much a remake of this movie, the 1 adaptation that dives head first into those discussions. I think a decent movie franchise could have been salvaged out of it, with adventures more in the action-adventure-soldiers vein of Stand Alone Complex, rather than adapting Innocence or the manga stories.

@8thDoctor -

I agree. I think it’s easily the best live action adaptation of an anime but it was perfect.
Honestly, I think if it just had maybe 15 more minutes of philosophy in there, it would have been even better.

@HulkisHorny - I honestly would have preferred it if they had dropped Mokoto's origin mystery & had just rolled with ScarJo being a brain in a robot body & her name is Mokoto Kusanagi; drop Batou's cyber-eye origin too, those were 5 minutes unnecessarily wasted. Focus that run time into discussion heady philosophy, to add tashikomas or give the whole team actual scenes. I think it would be a stronger movie with those changes, which is why a sequel could have shined since it could have jumped off from a stronger base.

@HulkisHorny - it looked great but it made dropped the ball with Motoko. Firstly they call her Major because that's her rank, shes a vet. In the live action she is just a girl who has no memory but an expensive body. Makes no sense. In the anime she questions her humanity because shes been a cyborg so long, only retaining her brain which she cant see or feel. In this she has amnesia. It's just so dumbed down, like there is no faith in an audience to follow a film that hasn't been done else where better. If they just stuck to the original character back story and arc it would have been much more effective.

@Vision85 - It's Hollywood, they think everyone need to be spoon fed and we need plenty of mindless action. Then again the way most big box office films perform, they aren't wrong for thinking it.

That’s reasonable.

I would definitely watch a sequel.

The steel book looks glorious! A bit sad I found a blu-ray copy in the Wal-mart bargain bin (25th anniversary Ed), now I can't reasonably justify purchasing that glorious steel book copy.

Wait, the steel book is another 25th anniversary edition? How long has this movie been in it's 25th year of life?

Watched the live action movie in theaters and probably passed out a half hour into it...

I’ll give the anime a shot at some point.

@FlixMentallo21 - I have them on DVD and the updated movie versions on Blu-Ray.

I can also watch it on Netflix(UK) so I'll just put the subtitles on.

@marvel72 - I still have yet to see the Rebuild films.

Netflix's dub was my first experience with the show, but I do have four of the ADV DVD's, so I'll get a taste of the dub that started it all.

@FlixMentallo21 - If you are on about you are not alone set they are good, they do look nice on Blu-Ray, they are pretty much the originals.

The third movie is set about 5 years after the second movie and that was a little confusing.

But overall yeah f*cking good.

@marvel72 - Here’s hoping ‘Thrice Upon a Time’ delivers a satisfying conclusion—and, unlike the original series and movies, closure.
