HELLSING Live-Action Feature In The Works At Amazon Studios From JOHN WICK Writer Derek Kolstad

John Wick writer Derek Kolstad is set to sink his teeth into a live-action adaptation of Japanese manga/anime Hellsing for Amazon Studios.

Originally published by Shōnen Gahōsha, Kouta Hirano's take on the Dracula/Van Helsing mythology reimagines the iconic vampire as Alucard, "a special agent bound to The Hellsing Organization, under the leadership of Integra Hellsing, great-granddaughter of Abraham Van Hellsing, to aid them in their mission to protect England and the world from vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural threats. The manga also focuses on Hellsing’s newest recruit, a female ex-police officer named Seras Victoria."

“Ever since my brother introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime some years ago, I’ve been obsessed with adapting it,” Kolstad said (via Deadline). “And when Mike Callaghan and his team managed to secure the rights to then partner us up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon, I mean -damn, dude- this is a dream.”

Kolstad will also produce the feature along with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber of Ranger 7 Films, Jason Lust of Soluble Fish Productions.

“Derek is an exceptional writer and we are so excited to partner with him on what he does very best – building rich mythology filled with iconic characters,” said Kavanaugh-Jones.

No other details are available at this time, but there are already rumors doing the rounds that Keanu Reeves might be in line for a role. That's obviously pure speculation, but there's no denying he would be a great pick for Alucard!

What do you guys make of this news? Any Hellsing fans out there?

The original anime still slaps but I’d love a reboot.

The anime rocks cotton socks. I mean my God, even the Team Four Star Abridged version even managed to kick ass.
Not sure about its live-action potential though. Feels like forever since we got a vampire movie when the vampires actually act like vampires and not in some anti-hero sorta role

Hellsing is one of those popular manga/anime franchises that I never could get into, since it's supposed to be this badass horror/action series, but Alucard keeps pulling convenient new powers in every fight scene and curbstomping his way through the series. That just got boring for me.

@FinnishDude - I mean, he's one of the oldest vampires alive and is incredibly powerful. And for a good chunk of the series he was fighting gbouls and artificial vampires. And I wouldn't say he was pulling out nee convenient powers through the whole series. He knee what would kill him and what wouldn't. Its why he almost never tried to evade any kind of damage and just stood there and took it all the time. And he wasn't using his craziest powers often in the early parts because he didn't need to.

@CorndogBurglar - yeah never saw it as just conveniently having new powers. It always came across as he doesn't reveal his abilities until he needs to. He's just being strategic.

@Origame - Well that, and the fact that he obviously enjoyed using guns too. When Walter gives him the black gu. He gets all excited about it, and he's always laughing and smiling when shooting. Not to mention, to use his crazier powers he has to unlock those different security levels. Why would he go through all of that when most of his enemies are easy to kill for him?

@Origame - And I mean, the first time he has to use them he says he's unlocking control restrictions to level 1. So right off the bat you should know he's got several more abilities and it isn't just lazy writing by giving him convenient powers throughout the series.

@CorndogBurglar - You can give all the in-universe lore explanations to his OP powers, it doesn't change the fact that every single fight Alucard has basically boils down to him regenarating from a puddle of blood, after his opponent gave everything they got, going "LOL" and then one-shotting them. There are never any stakes of him losing and he doesn't even have any personal stakes on the conflict, since he does everything basically for the lolz.

@FinnishDude - Focus on Seras, she’s the proper lead to follow & has an arc to follow; It helped me get into it more. We get told up front that Dracula is the strongest there is, & he’s a static character so he can sometimes get boring, he’s there to look cool & wicked violent action.

Will Team Four Star do an abridged version?

@BlackConvoy - If they don't, some fans will probably edit their audio into the live-action footage.

As a Hellsing fan this does intrigue me but at the same time seeing how other anime have been treated when they got the live action treatment I don't hold up much hope for this being good and the fact that this is being developed as a live action instead of a live action series to me says that the story might be a bit rushed.

I doubt they can pull it off, but I wish them the best. Now give that b**ch a cannon!
