UPDATE: Gary Oldman Confirmed As WB's Choice For The Colonel In Akira

We had heard rumors of Warner Bros interest in Oldman for a role in their live action adap of the classic Manga/Anime and now Deadline confirm he is the man they want for the story's (kinda) villain; Colonel Shikishima..

I'm not sure whether to be happy or sad about this. But then he hasn't said yes yet. Twitch actually broke this story, but then we could only write it up as a rumor. Now it seems that WB are definitely pursuing the mighty Gary Oldman for a role in their live action Akira flick. They also reveal that he is being looked at for the role of the Wizard Merlin in a new take on the Arthurian legend..

The advance accolades for Gary Oldman’s work in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has put the actor in high demand. He’s Warner Bros’ choice not only to play the role of The Colonel in Akira (Garrett Hedlund will star in one of the two leads in the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed film), but also to play Merlin in Arthur & Lancelot, which David Dobkin will direct from his own script.

Oldman was "in high demand" long before his performance in Tinker Taylor but whatever. Deadline also seem fairly certain that Hedlund will play as either Tetsuo or Kaneda. If Oldman does sign on it will certainly lend this movie a lot of credibility. If however he does not it might be a good indication of the quality (or lack thereof) of the script. We can also assume from this that Twitch were spot on with the offer to Helena Bonham Carter to play Lady Miyako.

UPDATE: THR report that as well as Oldman and Bonham Carter Kiera Knightly has been approached for a role. No indication as to which part, but one would assume it would be that of Kaneda's love interest Kai.

They're actually going with Oldman. Right. I love Oldman, don' get me wrong. he's been the man since Sid and Nancy and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, but...
Can anyone imagine him walking through the barren wasteland of the last couple of Akira books, Mad max stylee? Can he pull off that kind of cool?

Well he is a fantastic actor, but the real problem is that they're making this...

People really need to get over the race thing. Did everyone go crazy at Martin Scorsese when he remade Infernal Affairs as The Departed? It happens all of the time. My problem isn't that the story is being Americanized, it's that they don't seem to be doing it justice. Well, maybe their newer script drafts do so I'm willing to give it a chance. Setting is only one element, they can still make a faithful version of the original Manga. Even the Anime took big liberties with that and it was directed by the creator of the damn thing.

I don't like Hedlund though, but if they get a great Tetsuo it could work.

Hedlund, Knightley, and Oldman alone is a great cast.

The original script did change the names I think..but so what? We will all know who they are based on and those that never read/watched the comics/cartoon won't give a [frick] anyway. There is a way they could keep the original names and pay homage to the Japanese origins too. Set it in a Japanese influenced American society like in Blade Runner.

LinkHall: You can rent the DVD, and buy or download the comics, to experience it for yourself.

But you won´t do it in one afternoon. the AKIRA completed manga is bigger than a phonebook.

I really hope Oldman takes the role of Merlin he would be awesome in that part. I dont wanna see him in a film which is going to be total abomination.

Boycott! not make this movie. another great story they will shit on! DBZ could have been great but it was shit. Wish they would have got Stephen Chow to direct DBZ. His sense of humor and directing style fits right into the DBZ universe. Kung Fu Hustle, CJ4 shoaling soccer. It would be nice to see what he could do with a big Hollywood Budget.
