Well I mean in all technicality, Earth Kingdom is mainland China (the biggest area of the Avatar Earth), while Fire Nation is Japan (Japan's imperialism in the late 1800's). The Air Nation is Tibet (oppressed people) and the Water tribe represents Inuit culture.

Korra, mirroring our universe, takes place during the 20's. If Earth Kingdom is still mirroring China - this reflects the event where the emperor-ship falls in China and is replaced by the socialist (cough communist) People's Republic of China.

@WinterSoldier33, It's probably the best one. My favorite one is the first, but I have to admit that the script of the third season is much more complex and interesting than any other season.
