We've been waiting what feels like forever for a live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop and it's finally happening! As you can see, Netflix has announced that a 10 episode series is in the works and Shinichiro Watanabe, who directed the original anime, will serve as a consultant on the series.

An official synopsis for this take on the property has also been revealed by the streaming giant:

Based on the worldwide phenomenon from Sunrise Inc., Cowboy Bebop is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed: a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world…for the right price.

Christopher Yost (Thor) is on board as executive producer and the writer of the first episode, while he'll be joined by fellow showrunners Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio; Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios; Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc.

Tetsu Fujimura and Matthew Weinberg will also executive produce so, as we said at the top of this post, there's a lot of great talent involved in the long overdue series.

The anime is a masterpiece. This is entirely unnecessary but I'll check it out. Not like this being not good will ruin the quality of the anime, so I'm indifferent about this. Who knows, this might be cool.

:looks at live action Death Note:

......never mind.

The shadow of Death Note hangs heavy over this, but Netflix has been producing frequently high quality stuff since then so I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

@RorMachine - the quality of Netflix content can definitely be disputed, they have some great stuff but also regularly release a fair amounts of polished turds (in the wind... sorry I had to, damn you Venom) but who knows. Let's pray this is more Stranger Things, Vultron, Castlevania and Oksha than it is Altered Carbon, Bright, Death Note and Mute.

This doesn't really sound all that appealing to me. At best it comes close to the anime, at worst...

@Kyos - yeah, I've never understood the appeal of remaking a Classic or Masterpiece. You're setting yourself up to fail.

@ArthurFleck - yea. The anime is literally flawless and not really in need of a remake.

@BlackBeltJones - as a person who watches all 26 twice a year , i'll say a no as well even tho i want it but only for selfish reasons.
that series broke the mold of conventional anime's and story wise is timeless ...

i always wanted a prequel but i like how so much is left ambiguous

@knocturnalzen10 - I would take a prequel series focuosing on every character with Watanabe at the helm.

But not this. I too rewatch the show a few times a year.

@BlackBeltJones - i figured when you had stair way to heaven for your avi for a few months ..... that fight was so epic !!!!!!!

and yes cause i found jet's past super interesting even if they covered the arm loss in the series

@knocturnalzen10 - Jet's past and even Faye's really interest me.

The Jet and Udai Taxim episode is onenof my favorites. Need to see more of his police past.

Of course, Spike's gangster past is intriguing too.

@BlackBeltJones - exactly ! the sliding of the weapons was so profound to me , especially after them trying to kill each the whole series .

layered relationship between spike and viscous .....

and seeing the situation with Julie .

damn you! now i'm going to re-watch it again and put GOT on hold for a few days lol

Altered Carbon reminded me of Cowboy Bebop a lot. Especially the bits with Will Yun Lee.

If they cast this right, preferably with Lee as Spike, or someone comparable with both martial arts expertise and acting chops, it could work.
