As we get closer to the release of Avengers: Doomsday this December, more merchandise for the movie has begun finding its way online and into stores. Recently, we shared a first look at Funko's Lord Doom figure, which generated a lot of discussion among fans.
Showing Doctor Doom in Latverian ceremonial dress—and with a different mask—it implied that the movie would include flashbacks to when Victor Von Doom represented his country on the world stage.
Over the weekend, those Lord Doom Pops have shown up in stores with a never-before-seen "Concept Series" label on them. Now, Hasbro has confirmed that this iteration of Avengers: Doomsday's big bad is based on concept art and won't appear in the movie.
This is something we've seen happen a lot with Marvel Studios over the years. This summer, for example, Spider-Man: Brand New Day promo art and toys flooded stores with a Scorpion who had a completely different tail design. Clearly, that version had been sent out to companies, only for the team working on the movie to change its mind fairly late into production.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is another example; there were a lot of Rintrah toys, but when the sequel finally came out, the talking bull-like creature had been left almost entirely on the cutting room floor.
The same seems to be the case with Lord Doom, meaning he was likely cut from the narrative during shooting or removed during reshoots. With it too late to cancel a line of toys that have already been made, Funko and Hasbro will release figures that are clearly labelled as being based on concept art. It's an unprecedented move, but one that keeps expectations in check and explains Lord Doom's absence from Avengers: Doomsday.
