At this stage, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man being in Avengers: Doomsday is perhaps the movie's worst-kept secret. Multiple plot leaks have revealed that it opens with an Incursion between his reality and Earth-10005, the home of the X-Men.
Peter Parker and Wolverine will be believed lost after Spidey's home is destroyed. However, both heroes are expected to return either in Avengers: Doomsday's final act or on Battleworld in next December's Avengers: Secret Wars.
Rumours have swirled that Maguire's Spider-Man will be decked out in a comic-accurate Iron Spider costume. Leaked photos have shown the actor wearing a motion-capture costume (lending some weight to those claims), but insider Daniel Richtman has now disputed those claims.
"You know how in No Way Home, Tobey had a suit that was similar to his Raimi films, but it wasn’t 100% the same since it had been rebuilt from scratch?" he wrote on X. "Same thing in Doomsday. It’s his Raimi suit - no Iron Spider colouring or anything like that."
So, Marvel Studios and the Russo Brothers are sticking to what works, giving Maguire's Spider-Man his classic costume for his clash with Deadpool and Wolverine (who will also be in their own comic-accurate suits).
While many fans have expressed disappointment that Maguire and Hugh Jackman's roles in the movie will be relatively minor, opening with an Incursion like this certainly helps establish the stakes. It also brings together two iconic interpretations of these characters for the first time on screen.
