Dark Matter Creator Explains Why Marvel's Multiverse Saga Is The "Antithesis" Of His Apple TV Series

Blake Crouch believes Dark Matter uses parallel worlds to explore its characters, and he's frustrated that the Apple TV series has been lumped in with Marvel's Multiverse Saga stories.

When Marvel Studios announced plans to explore alternate realities in the "Multiverse Saga," fans immediately started expressing their excitement. That started strong with Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home, but ultimately led to an era of storytelling with a lot of ups and downs.

Now, most fans are ready to move on from the Multiverse. The concept has grown a little stale—plenty of other major franchises and movies have explored the idea in recent years—and Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will finally wrap the Saga up.

One of those competing Multiverse stories is Apple TV's Dark Matter. Blake Crouch, the creator of the series and author of the 2016 novel it's based on, recently spoke to Slash Film (via SFFGazette.com) and made it clear he has no respect for the MCU's approach to parallel worlds.

"Marvel comes along, and they make [multiverses] the plot device of every single movie," he bemoaned. "I know why they do it, it's because it's easy, and it's because... I'm sorry, I don't have an extraordinary amount of respect for that kind of storytelling, just for what you said."

"This is literally the antithesis, what we're doing, of that," Crouch continued. "We're using it as a way to explore character, to explore what our characters are capable of."

While the writer acknowledges that he didn't create the idea of a Multiverse, he believes the Dark Matter novel "was one of the first times a story crossed mainstream with the multiverse." Now, he's unhappy that the series is being lumped in with the MCU.

"So, yeah, I mean, it's annoying because a lot of times when we started making the show, when it came out, a lot of people were like, 'Oh, just riding that multiverse trend, aren't you?'" Crouch added. "And I'm like, 'We were here before.'"

Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken. In Season 1, the series followed Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived.

Jennifer Connelly also stars, along with ensemble cast members Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel. Crouch serves as creator, executive producer, showrunner and writer alongside executive producers Matt Tolmach, Richard Lederer and Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, who co-wrote every episode of season two with Crouch.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to arrive in theaters on December 18. As for Dark Matter, the finale debuts on October 30.

Don't think every single movie in Marvel was about the multiverse. OG star trek did it and Sliders in the 90s. Not sure what he's complaining about. Marvel has their thing and he has his.

DC was doing Multiverse stories in 1961, Mr. Crouch. I’m sure they were not the first to do it either. Get over yourself.

@RolandD - The ancient Greeks were debating multiple realities thousands of years before that. 😝

Is Dark Matter any good? I saw Crouch at a hockey game last Friday. Sounds interesting at least.

@JustAWaffle -

The first season was pretty good. Season 2 is going in a ditch. There are infinite amounts of the main guy's multiverse doubles, and they are drowning under the weight of trying to keep up with all that. Season 2 is falling apart so much that I haven't kept up and will probably drop it.

@DocSpock - So weird that he gets all the copies but it never seems to happen to anyone else, or to him in the timeline beyond when he was trying to get home. There shoulds be millions of copies of his family in millions of worlds by now; they should keep on bumping into themselves, trying to hide from himself.

This guy draws parallels very badly. Season 2 of this show is falling apart. I doubt it will return for another season.

At least Marvel *tried* to come up with some rules. Dark Matter is... fine, but it makes zero sense even with just what is shown on the screen. E.g. if him going into the box and making various choices created hundreds of further copies of himself--that should also happen for every other character who has used the box. There should be countless versions of his wife and son knocking around; if it's happening, it's never been addressed. If you say "oh it's only because all those versions of him are trying to do the same single thing," the black dude is constantly going back and forth between the same places; there should be millions of him milling around.

Honestly, after everything else, spinning the plot out by having the wife go walkabout (making zero sense) followed by a painfully slow filler episode that was 60% slow camera moves and almost zero dialogue really killed my momentum for season 2.

I haven’t read the book or seen the “Dark Matter” tv show but it seems more like Mr Crouch is just upset that his work is being lumped in as to following a trend which is understandable given he wrote it before the Multiverse Saga started…

However these comments also reek of someone who is actually ignorant about the very thing he is complaining about because if you actually look at it , there haven’t been that many projects in this current era of the MCU that have centered on the multiverse and even then a couple of them at the least have used that conceit to explore characters such as Loki in his own show and Dr Strange in MoM (even NWH and DP & W to an extent imo).

Sure some can complain its all nostalgia bait or fan service which it has been to a degree but I vehemently disagree that there hasn’t been more to the MCU Multiverse then that!!.
