Dunesday's Winner Decided? Avengers: Doomsday Reportedly Outselling Dune: Part Three By Up To 4-To-1

A new presales report suggests Avengers: Doomsday is building a commanding lead over Dune: Part Three, with the MCU blockbuster heading for a dominant December opening weekend.

In news unlikely to surprise anyone, Avengers: Doomsday is on track for a dominant opening weekend this December, with early box office presales suggesting Marvel Studios' next blockbuster could leave Dune: Part Three in the dust as a distant second.

According to EmpireCity Box Office (via SFFGazette.com), Avengers: Doomsday is currently outselling the Denis Villeneuve-directed sci-fi sequel by a ratio of between 3.2-to-1 and 4-to-1 based on presales. While these early figures don't guarantee a specific box office outcome, "Dunesday" won't be a particularly close competition, even with the Dune threequel playing exclusively on IMAX screens.

Both movies are among the year's most highly anticipated releases, but Avengers: Doomsday has the advantage. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the movie will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, alongside returning Avengers and X-Men, and the long-awaited introduction of the Fantastic Four into the wider MCU.

It will also set the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars, making it a crucial chapter in Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga as this tumultuous era of storytelling nears its conclusion.

Meanwhile, Dune: Part Three will continue Villeneuve's acclaimed adaptation of Frank Herbert's science-fiction saga, with Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul Atreides. The movie has plenty of appeal in its own right, but is less mainstream than Earth's Mightiest Heroes and isn't a follow-up to the biggest blockbuster ever, 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

Of course, presales are only one early indicator of box office performance, and the numbers could change as both releases approach their theatrical debuts. However, if the reported gap holds, Avengers: Doomsday could set for a particularly dominant opening weekend.

Dune: Part Three is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Now a ruthless Emperor, Paul must face the consequences of his reign as old allies return, terrifying new threats emerge, and betrayal lurks in every shadow.

Haunted by visions of Imperial collapse and the reappearance of his long-lost love, Paul is drawn into a sweeping conspiracy, with Chani at the heart of its unfolding mystery. As rebellion brews and enemies close in, Paul must confront the true cost of power and the fate of those he loves the most.

In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

Both movies arrive in theaters on December 18.

It's too bad that Dune's ticket sales will suffer because the powers that be decided to compete with the Avengers.

If Warner was clever, they would move Dune 3 to November. No competition there, and it will make money.

@jasonvoorhees - Warner Bros lost all common sense a long time ago. Releasing Dune in November is a much better business move but they want competition from Disney so they got it. Bring it on lol.

@jasonvoorhees - i dont think anyone doubted that Avengers was going to win. Its more about if either film will break even or profit due to their enormous costs and the fact that they are both aimed at the same audience type.

Doomsday has a bigger price tag and has no imax screens for 3 weeks. its more interesting if that film will break even due to its rumored 500 mil budget before marketing, while dune 3 costs half of that. And what if doomsday sucks? Will the movie flop? BVS back in day was supposed to be a guranteed hit but due to its poor reception it didnt even make 1 billion despite having the 2 most popular cb characters in the genre.

Seeing both and absolutely can't wait.

Dune Part 3 - December 15th (just read Messiah in preparation).

Avengers: Doomsday - December 16th.

So far 8 bookings total. 5 for Doomsday, 3 for Dune. The week between December 15th and December 23rd will be going to the cinema nearly every single day, rotating between Doomsday and Dune lol.

@kylo0607 - Damn thats a lot of early bookings. We don't even know if the movies are going to be any good yet, you might be done with it after 1 viewing lol.

I got Avengers for Sat and Dune 3 for Sun, can't see it earlier as I gotta work extra to pay for holiday gifts.

@vectorsigma - Well Spider-Man Brand New Day made a ridiculous amount of money. More money than it needed to and that’s just Spider-Man. No Avengers. This is the first Avengers film in seven years. It’s going to smash records left, right and centre. There is no doubt, there is no debate. Pointless thinking otherwise. It is inevitable.

@vectorsigma - Just stating facts my guy. Nothing to do with whoever you referenced. Doomsday is clearing the box office in December. There is no competition. I’ll see you back here in December when Doomsday is smashing records everyday. Try not to get upset about it, stay mad bruh. 👋🏿

@UceOmega - lolz, i dont argue it will be big at the BO.

But context dude. It needs maybe 2B to break even

@jasonvoorhees - Already have lol. I didn’t bother reading his last comment. Yeah he’s weird. He has this weird obsession with box office and marvel movies. He spends too much time online and is in dire need of some fresh air and sunshine.

I’m so pissed that Dune secured the IMAX screenings and not Doomsday. Watching Infinity War & Endgame in IMAX were some of the best cinematic experiences I ever had. Now I have to settle for Superscreen or something smaller. So disappointed. Damn you Dune! I don’t like the franchise, I couldn’t finish the first instalment and I hope it fails miserably as the box office. I’m so angry about it lol.

It was pretty obvious Dune didn’t move to block Doomsday from using IMAX in an attempt to gain something, but as great as Dune movies are, there was no way they can compete. They should’ve moved

Was there ever any competition to begin with?
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/25/2026, 7:22 AM
@bkmeijer1 - i feel somewhat but not as much as some people thought.

The Dune movies have been well received and successful but they aren’t as mainstream as the MCU given they can be slow paced , philosophically complex and just dense which isn’t for everyone

Plus they aren’t also coming off the backs of the EG re-release and BND which did so well!!.

Based on presales so far, @Avengers Doomsday going to win Dec. 18th weekend by a 3.2x or 4x to 1 ratio. Not a knock on the sales of @dunemovie at all, but the winner of the weekend is set.

There is no real competition between the two, shows you what a juggernaut is incoming.

But did anyone in their right mind really think that Dune was any competition for Doomsday? For weeks I’ve heard so many people say that Doomsday should change its release date because of Dune and IMAX, but Doomsday doesn’t need IMAX at all (just like Brand New Day didn’t), the one that loses here is Dune. WB should have avoided at all costs releasing the movie on the same weekend as Doomsday.

As for me, I´ll watch both opening weekend.

Honestly , this isn’t too surprising but i did expect Dune to atleast do a bit better then it has though in pre-sales…

However the success of either film isn’t just determined by opening weekend since Doomsday could be front-loaded but then crash in the subsequent weeks so it & Dune both need legs which comes from rewatchability so they both need to deliver on that front which fingers crossed they do!!.

We are still a little under 2 months away so things can change as we get closer to December 18th but i think both films will do well due to lack of strong competition come January while movies like Jumanji might suffer because of them but we’ll see.
