Splitting Up Sam Wilson And Bucky Barnes Was Marvel’s Biggest Phase 5 Blunder

Splitting up Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes destroyed both character's post-Endgame momentum. Here is why breaking up one of the MCU's best duos was a huge mistake.

Marvel Studios' decision to split up Bucky and Sam Wilson after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a huge mistake.

For a long time, those two were practically inseparable in the eyes of fans, and their dynamic was one of the best things to come out of the post-Endgame era. But a lot of that magic is gone now as we head towards Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. It's a truck-load of potential, absolutely squandered.

Bucky and Sam's connection goes all the way back to 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, arguably one of the best movies in all of Marvel; it introduced Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson while transforming Sebastian Stan’s Bucky from a tragic WWII sidekick into a brainwashed, nigh-unstoppable assassin.

What started as serious tension turned into hilarious bickering in Civil War as the two competed for Steve's attention and eventually evolved into genuine, hard-earned trust by the time the duo teamed up on Disney+.

When Steve Rogers handed Sam the iconic shield at the end of Endgame, it felt like a no-brainer that these two needed to stick together for the long-haul as a package deal for the MCU’s next chapter, with Sam providing the moral compass while Bucky brought the grit, Super Soldier muscle, and deeper history with Steve.

So why did Kevin Feige and co. decide to break up one of their best duos for Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World?

Albeit with the benefit of hindsight, it's clear that they were split merely for the benefit of narrative reasons and not character development.

Marvel needed a recognizable, veteran hero to anchor the Thunderbolts* lineup, and Bucky was just simply the easiest narrative glue that was readily available. Meanwhile, the studio was in a bit of an experimentation mode and wanted to see if Sam could carry a tentpole film entirely on his own before potentially taking the reins of the next Avengers film.

These decisions completely backfired.

Thunderbolts* earned solid reviews from critics and fans alike, but it still floundered at the box office.

On the flipside, all of the promise Sam had at the end of Endgame, as he accepted the shield from Steve, has been completely squandered. Brave New World suffered through endless reshoots and script overhauls, resulting in a mess of a movie whose only real takeaway was setting up The Leader as Doctor Doom’s lackey.

Somewhere in the multiverse, there's a version of the MCU where the ideas and plotlines of Thunderbolts* and Brave New World are combined, where Sam and Bucky team up to investigate the actions of The Leader and have to deal with competing government factions from President Thaddeus Ross and CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to create their own versions of The Avengers.

The film concludes with the revelation that both Ross and De Fontaine want to create their own teams to wipeout evideince of their past misdeeds, which lead Bucky and Sam to decide to form their own version of the Avengers, separate from the government, and to continue Steve's legacy on their own terms.

Marvel's decision to split up Sam and Bucky trades a fan-favorite, battle-tested dynamic for two disjointed solo storylines that fail to stick the landing.

By trying to force Sam into a solitary spotlight and using Bucky as an ensemble fix-all, the studio managed to weaken both characters right when the Multiverse Saga desperately needed a grounded, reliable core.

Heading into Avengers: Doomsday, Sam Wilson is set to lead a brand-new Avengers team. The only problem? Fans have never actually seen them form, let alone go into battle together.

For the Thunderbolts* or New Avengers/Avengerz, it's not explicitly clear who leads that team- is it Bucky or is it Yelena?

Sam and Bucky were supposed to carry on Steve Rogers' legacy - his leadership, his core moral compass, and his uncanny ability to hold a team of diverse personalities together in order to overcome insurmountable odds. Marvel had the perfect setup, and somehow, they completely botched it for both of them.

Anthony Mackie seemingly alluded to this sentiment himself while making Brave New World.

Sebastian Stan was a little more humorous in his take on this topic but admitted that he was also missing his running mate while filming Thunderbolts, commenting, " Thunderbolts*, let me tell you, it was a much quieter year for me because I didn’t see Anthony Mackie. So, I’ll say that. Although I miss Anthony Mackie like daily, and it’s something I don’t like to admit."

Their real-life chemistry was obvious, and it came through crystal clear on screen.

Instead of building toward Doomsday and Secret Wars with a unified Captain America front, fans are left to ponder about what could've been.

No. No it wasn’t. Just get rid of Sam Wilson. Lame ass character and poor actor.

Agreed. I feel like Sam and Bucky were Caps legacy. Sam, because he inspired new generations of heroes and Bucky, because he showed that Cap will fight for anyone's shot at redemption. The biggest fumble was giving Sam the shield when narratively, it made sense for Bucky to have it in the end.

As a strong, masculine white guy, the Bucky/Winter Soldier character was going to be relegated in the neo-feminist Phase 4/5/6 writers' room to third-tier status. In all of his post-Endgame appearances, he was in the background and didn't have much to say. Tremendous waste of a character played perfectly by Sebastian Stan, who became well-liked and recognized by normies. Lost opportunity among many from 2021 to 2025 for Marvel Studios.

@GeneralZod - and the rumors point to him being even more mishandled in Doomsday

Sam’s a lame character. And Anthony Mackie is a horrendous actor.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but TFATWS is the only MCU series I watched more than once because I liked it that much.

I enjoyed Falcon and the Winter Soldier as a one-and-done series. The two have a fun buddy cop dynamic.

There’s a world where you can make Sam work as Cap. But you’ve gotta have Bucky. And you’ve gotta give him super soldier serum.

You could make it really interesting having Sam do it to save Bucky or something like that. Having a Cap choosing the serum out of necessity to save a life rather than having it be for his country, forced upon him, or for his ego. Would have gone a long way to give Sam the physical boost he needs while also giving him a really solid arc to becoming a leader.

I thought Falcon and the Winter Soldier started really strong, with Sam training with the shield and realizing his own limitations, and of course having Bucky doubt Steve’s decision. They just ruined it with making Sam a preachy social justice guy with no powers, which was never his character in the prior films. And yea, splitting him from Bucky ruined that dynamic.

@SheepishOne -

I think it makes sense why Sam didn’t take the serum and he’ll , I don’t think Steve would have even wanted him to and is certainly not the reason he chose him.

He also certainly doesn’t need it to become a solid leader imo but we’ll see if he has moments like that in Doomsday or not.

Also Sam was a counselor for vets when we met him this was always a social justice guy to some extent and I like that he first tries to listen to Karli in FaTWS and even talks to Ross which ultimately is how he beats Red Hulk which is talking him down.

Sam may not have powers (though as we see in BNW , he certainly has enough tech to put up a good fight) but his actual power is being empathetic and listening & talking to people as corny as it may seem.

@TheVisionary25 - Fair enough, and yea I think that’s maybe my issue is that Sam as Cap just feels so much cornier than Steve did lol. I like the idea of Sam as Cap, I just feel they haven’t made him compelling enough.

Bucky is an easy sell to fans and would have been a hard sell to other Avengers to see The Winter Soldier become Captain America, but it would have been interesting.

And I totally get why Sam doesn’t want to take the serum. Perfectly valid. But that’s why I think he should have been put into a position where he HAD to choose to take it to save the day. Leaders often have to make tough decisions for the greater good. And I think having Sam decide to use the Serum to save people rather than it be thrust upon him would make all the difference. And then you could have a whole movie dedicated to him figuring out how to be a super soldier and what that means for him.

My ideal Sam Cap trilogy would have been

Cap 4 - More or less a streamlined version of FatWS, with Sam training to become Cap. Spending the whole movie resisting the serum, but ultimately being put into a position where he has to make the tough choice and take it to win.

Cap 5 - Sam figuring out how to become a super soldier, but also him assembling the new iteration of the Avengers and having to prove himself as the leader

Cap 6 - Either Civil War 2 (Sam’s team versus the New Avengers), or if that’s too similar to Steve’s trilogy, an Illuminati movie would be cool, focused on the existing Illuminati recruiting Sam

Nah , i think splitting up Bucky & Sam was needed as much as i enjoy their dynamic & chemistry…

I say that because it not only helps to set up Sam as the sole lead of BNW & establish him really as Captain America (which while that movie isn’t great , i do think it does that well) while also showing how far Bucky has come seperate from Sam & Steve by being this elder statesmen to others like John , Yelena ,Alexei & Ava in need of redemption like he was so i get the intent behind it even if it may not have been successful financially though Thunderbolts was solid imo.

It was still nice to get a Bucky cameo in BNW though…

Also people can complain about us not having seen Sam’s Avengers in battle before Doomsday but i think again whether it’s the intent or not , it adds an underdog layer to the heroes even more against Doom because while the FF are in their prime it seems , we have 2 new and relatively untested Avengers teams and a version of the X-Men that are at their lowest point which helps raise the stakes of the film imo…

If we had seen Sam’s Avengers in action beforehand , that element would be gone and might feel like a retread of Phases 1-3 which they don’t want since there’s already complaints coming about how Doomsday might end too similar to IW with the villain victorious!!.

P.S: i do like your proposed idea for Cap 4 which could have been solid but oh well , it is what it is now!!.

Sam as Cap without being a Super Solider is [frick]ing dumb - especially against a HULK.

The dynamic in Civil War was fantastic.

The show was total [frick]ing retard level woke ass garbage and the Captain African American movie was even shittier.

They have almost a 100% [frick] up record since ENDGAME and the only thing they know now is to rehash what was already successful.
