Mark Ruffalo On Reuniting With Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans In The MCU: "Anything Could Happen"

Mark Ruffalo (She-Hulk, Avengers: Endgame) has weighed-in on the possibility of reuniting with former Earth's Mightiest Heroes team-mates Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in the MCU...

Robert Downey Jr. bid farewell to the MCU when Iron Man sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame, and while Steve Rogers is still kicking (as far as we know), the Infinity Saga finale also marked Chris Evans' final appearance as Captain America.

There have been persistent rumors that both actors will reprise their respective roles for Avengers: Secret Wars, which is certainly something that could be in the cards given the nature of the Multiverse.

Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk) appeared on stage at Emerald City Comic-Con over the weekend, and was asked how he feels about remaining on in the MCU without his original Avengers co-stars.

"Sad, but there is a time machine. And there are alternate universes and realities, so anything could happen,” he replied.

Ruffalo has been told off for revealing a little too much during interviews in the past, so he was quick to clarify that this wasn't actually giving away a spoiler.

"[Laughs, looks at the ceiling] Are one of these boards going to fall on me? Man, are you trying to get me in trouble again? I'm not going to say it's not possible, but I'm not going to say it is."

Many feel that Evans and Downey Jr. - particularly the latter - stepping back into the MCU would tarnish their characters' exits even if they were playing Variants, but Kevin Feige and co. will likely pull out all the stops to ensure the Multiverse Saga goes out with a bang, so we'd say their returns are a definite possibility.

Every Marvel character ever put on screen needs to appear in the epic battle scene in Avengers: Secret Wars. Period.

As much as I philosophically disagree with bringing RDJ and Chris Evans back, considering how well I think their characters' arcs were concluded...I gotta say, I'm much less enthusiastic about the "new" Avengers roster. Unless they can inject some excitement into the new blood, bringing back the OGs might be the only thing to get me interested again.

Sadly, I don't think we'll ever hit Infinity War and Endgame levels of enthusiasm again. We followed most of those characters for around a decade and watched the MCU get built around them. It's nearly impossible to recreate that at this point.

They do still have some great characters at their disposal, like Strange, Vision, Wanda, Ant-Man, and Spidey (and the Guardians, assuming they don't all get killed in vol. 3). But I worry too much focus will be on some of the more recent (and less interesting) additions to the MCU. I guess we'll see.

@SheepishOne - but we could hit No Way Home levels of enthusiasm. And that’s exactly what’s going to happen. Downey and Evans will make one last appearance in Secret Wars as variants from another universe/dimension and that’ll be the last we see of them before F4 and X-Men become the new mainstays.

@Frshcoupe - I don't think you're wrong about that. I just hope that all that's left isn't nostalgia-focused enthusiasm (i.e. bringing old characters out of retirement).

I'd love to get hyped to see a Shang-Chi vs Kang fight in the same way we got Iron Man vs Thanos. That's what was so great about Infinity War and Endgame vs No Way Home...while I really enjoyed both, and both relied heavily on fan service...No Way Home at a meta level was about fan service by way of nostalgia, while Endgame was about paying off all of the setups, like Cap lifting Mjolnir, or giving the "Avengers assemble" line.

I don't want to argue that one holds more or "better" entertainment value than another. But one of those two films was a delivery of a conclusion to the present, while the other (while insanely cool) is just cherry picking from other movies and playing off of the feelings you had for those films. One I think is lazier than the other, narratively speaking.

That's also my problem with this multiverse stuff. You don't have to be particularly creative to write "and then an alternate reality Tony Stark shows up".

Granted, I don't know how they'd do it, and it could be a lot more thoughtful than that, but a lot of these fan pitches/theories for Secret Wars sound like they want a portals-esque scene with these guys all showing up. It just feels a bit like backpedaling and being less confident with the new characters.

@SheepishOne - yeah, we didn't really spent a lot of time with the characters at all.

Not only because the Avengers finale already starts in the fifth instead of the tenth year of its saga, but also because we just saw many more different characters get movies or tv shows.

Both sagas have 20 projects or so before Avengers, but this saga none of the characters showed up nore than twice.

@SheepishOne - I just don't think we have spent enough time with them to care. We may like some more than others on an individual level. But we have yet to see them team up you know?
I hold my reservation about the new team until after cap4, armor wars, and whichever hidden team up movie we have coming between now and Kang and secret wars

@SheepishOne - I think if they had an Avengers movie in phase 4 bringing together the new characters, it would feel more like before. As of right now, everything feels disjointed.

@philinterrupted - I agree. Would've been better to wrap up Phase 5 with an Avengers movie instead of a Thunderbolts movie

philinterrupted - 3/6/2023, 8:33 AM
@bkmeijer1 - it’s been may biggest complaint about phases 4 and 5.
Phase 1,2,3 all had everyone come together at sone point. It made things feel connected.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/6/2023, 8:36 AM
@philinterrupted - yeah. Think they should've wrapped 4 with Young Avengers, and 5 and 6 with an Avengers movie respectively.

A Thunderbolts movie as a wrap-up just doesn't feel right. Makes more sense to me to use that open a phase with like Civil War did.

I don't like bringing those guys back, but......

I am not jazzed by littering the screen with the Avengers minor league team either.
