Robert Downey Jr. bid farewell to the MCU when Iron Man sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame, and while Steve Rogers is still kicking (as far as we know), the Infinity Saga finale also marked Chris Evans' final appearance as Captain America.
There have been persistent rumors that both actors will reprise their respective roles for Avengers: Secret Wars, which is certainly something that could be in the cards given the nature of the Multiverse.
Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk) appeared on stage at Emerald City Comic-Con over the weekend, and was asked how he feels about remaining on in the MCU without his original Avengers co-stars.
"Sad, but there is a time machine. And there are alternate universes and realities, so anything could happen,” he replied.
Ruffalo has been told off for revealing a little too much during interviews in the past, so he was quick to clarify that this wasn't actually giving away a spoiler.
"[Laughs, looks at the ceiling] Are one of these boards going to fall on me? Man, are you trying to get me in trouble again? I'm not going to say it's not possible, but I'm not going to say it is."
Many feel that Evans and Downey Jr. - particularly the latter - stepping back into the MCU would tarnish their characters' exits even if they were playing Variants, but Kevin Feige and co. will likely pull out all the stops to ensure the Multiverse Saga goes out with a bang, so we'd say their returns are a definite possibility.
