AVENGERS 5: Colman Domingo Speaks On Rumors That Have Him Replacing Jonathan Majors As Kang The Conqueror

Will Marvel Studios hire a new actor to replace Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror or will the MCU move away from the character altogether?

If you're one to believe rumors then actor Colman Domingo is stated to be one of several actors that Marvel Studios is eyeing to replace Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror.

Majors was fired by Marvel Studios on December 18, 2023, after being found guilty of guilty of reckless assault and harassment in his high-profile domestic violence trial. Majors had previously played Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantomania and in Loki season 1 and 2.

As of this date, (though Majors will not be portraying him) it's thought that Kang the Conqueror is still a prominent component of Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will close out the MCU's Multiversal Saga.

Domingo's name surfaced as a potential replacement for Majors right as the actor started his promotional tour for The Color Purple, which has allowed the If Beale Street Could Talk and  Rustin actor to weigh in on the rumors.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Domingo had this to share about the current talks surrounding Kang and Marvel.

"I don't know, I'm always looking at what I have to do right now... I know there's talk and conversations around, and I don't know how much is true. I don't even get that from my team, I can't tell if it's true or not."

"The fans are passionate. Somehow my name is out there in the world [and] I like the idea of just having your name called and someone speaking lovingly and kindly about something is a beautiful thing."

That's not a particularly informative answer by any stretch of the imagination but it certainly isn't a no. That might even be considered a win for Marvel as it seems lately, more and more A-list actors are emphatically stating that the MCU and superhero movies, in general, are not something they're looking to explore.

Case in point, when Majors was first fired, fans on social media immediately pointed to John Boyega as a potential replacement but it promptly let it be known that he had no interest.

Additionally, Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton abdicated directorial duties on Avengers 5 and it was revealed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron had been hired to rewrite the screenplay for Avengers 5, which had previously been penned by  Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’s Jeff Loveness.

It's clear that Avengers 5 is currently being reworked and it's even thought that it might no longer be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

While we await confirmation on whether that's the case, let us know if you're in favor of Domingo replacing Majors or if you think there's a better candidate.

It's a cautious statement for now and a smart one. I do hope he's really in Marvel Studios' vicinity of contenders to step up for the role.

And I wouldn't say it's mostly "A-list actors" that have been saying that about, it's only been Jacob Elordi when he revealed he thought that auditioning for Superman was "too dark for him". It's the usual group of veteran directors that like to belittle the genre during their films' press tours to gather more buzz around them and be revelant in the conversation.

@dracula - Ive only seen him in the first season of Fear the Walking Dead that he starred in (might have been season 2, cant remember). He played a guy who was purposefully ambiguous about whether he was good or bad. I thought he was a little hokey and over the top with his delivery, but people seem to like him. I think he could be okay in a pure villain role.

I have a feeling I'm going to get tired of reading this guy's name really fast, because I'm sure every other article is going to be about him potentially being Kang

I don't think it really matters honestly. We won't get any potential recast until late 2025 because they'd want to see if the MCU is still financially succesful enough to warrant development of at least two movies costing around $500m each and even then Avengers 5 won't release until 2027... :L

@Scarilian - theyre not canceling the Avengers brand which is what your suggestion is tantamount to. The wait-and-datamine approach only works when you are seriously entertaining all possibilities

@Scarilian - that's some scary shit you just said.

@SauronthePower -

There's zero chance of Avengers 5 releasing in 2026, 2027 is the most likely.

As for how the slate could look:

• Fantastic Four: May 2025
• Captain America 4: July 2025 (More time/reshoots, Independence Day Holiday, Marketing 'Cap 4 on July 4th)
• Thunderbolts: Nov 2025

• Blade: February 2026 (Lower budget film so benefits from empty February release slot)
• Spider-man 4: May 2026 (Most likely to take Kang Dynasty's spot)
• Armour Wars: July 2026 (Needs to happen prior to Kang Dynasty)
• World War Hulk: Nov 2026 (Combining plans for Thor 5 in a cross between 'Siege' and 'World War Hulk')

• Avengers Kang Dynasty: May 2027
• Doctor Strange 3: July 2027 (Explains his lack of inclusion in Avengers 5)
• Shang Chi 2: Nov 2027 (Stated as being planned for between Avengers 5 & 6)

• Avengers Secret Wars: May 2028
• Silver Surfer: July 2028 (Prequel ensuring the audience is familiar with Galactus and the direction the MCU will take post-Avengers Forever)
• Avengers Forever: Nov 2028

2028 is the 20th anniversary of the MCU. It makes sense to try and capitalize on that in some form, especially as Disney are relying on nostalgia. I don't see a bigger way to celebrate than two Avengers films in the same year.

Avengers 5 and Avengers 6 were originally announced, as occurring May and November of the same year showing that Disney are willing to do so and they need a massive anniversary year celebration to try and shake people out of apathy. I feel as such they'll split Secret Wars into two films becoming the 6th and 7th Avengers films (Secret Wars and Avengers Forever)

As for where they go beyond 2028, most likely they'd do Nova, X-Men, Young Avengers, Midnight Suns, that sort of thing.

"theyre not canceling the Avengers brand"

I don't think they'd cancel it, but they'd push it back until they can readjust. 2, or likely 3, $500m Avengers films ending up being box office bombs would destroy the brand. At the moment the Marvel brand is damaged but the Avengers brand may have some separate life to it like with the Spider-man brand.

@ObserverIO -
Perhaps, but feel it's the most realistic. Maybe we'll also get a good slate of films out of it thanks to the delays also.

I can’t wait to read article after article on this guy the next few months…

Or at least until we get all of the Echo reviews/articles gushing over how great the show is and how it’s a major achievement for the MCU….

I mean we still haven’t even gotten the obligatory “Top Ten Characters Coleman Domingo Could Play in the MCU Besides King”

No matter who they re-cast as Kang, they already made a huge mistake waiting so long in between Avengers movies. There should have been a new one in 23. But there is a lot I don’t agree with. I think Black Widow should have taken place during the Blip. Or any content to fill in that gap. But making Kang seem like an actual threat would have been a nice start. Hopefully they course correct.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 1/6/2024, 2:28 PM
@TiberiousOmega - Yep, I agree. They should have had 1 off movies and built towards something larger. There should be a team up movie every 3 years or so. The Captain America movies were like Avengers 1.5 and 2.5 so there was plenty to keep the different plots moving.
BlackStar25
BlackStar25 - 1/7/2024, 6:26 PM
@TiberiousOmega - I too agree. Their structures for Phase 4 and beyond have been terrible. We should have always gotten an Avengers movie every Phase as well.

I don't know, I still think this is going to be hard to recast. Actors are like a fraternity. Also, who wants to be associated with this role? Like it or not, Majors made this role his. I hate the idea of the Kang/Beyonder too. If they dont want to do the actual Beyonder, use some kind of MacGuffin (Molecule man?) and Doom.

He is a very good actor. If it happens, I think he'd do a great job.

The real question is can the MCU turn out some more excellent movies to end their downward spiral.

Hopefully the terrible Marvels was a massive wake up call for them.

One more bad honker like that could make this downward spiral irrecoverable.
