Marvel Studios finds itself in a major (no pun intended) predicament. After Jonathan Majors was found guilty on one count of intentional assault in the third degree and aggravated harassment in the second degree by a New York jury, his time as Kang the Conqueror swiftly ended.
The studio built an entire saga of storytelling around the actor, introducing him as He Who Remains in Loki before putting a Kang Variant front and centre in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. He returned as Victor Timely in Loki season 2 and, from there, we expected to see a lot more of him heading into the next Avengers movies.
Last year, a rumour found its way online suggesting Fear the Walking Dead star Colman Domingo is the frontrunner to replace Majors as Kang in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Domingo has commented on the rumours but spoke in greater detail during a newly published Vanity Fair profile.
"I know what you’re going to ask. You’re going to talk about the MCU," he initially responded. "It’s funny how people are online talking about this. And the moment it started happening, literally, I think I was on my couch. And I was like, 'What rumor? Who? Where’s this coming from?' I just didn’t think about it. The next day I woke up, it’s everywhere."
The site then asked if there's any truth to the claims he'll become the Multiverse Saga's new Kang. Domingo confirmed there have been talks with Marvel Studios "for years," only to stop short of confirming or denying whether he'll take over the role from Majors.
"You know, listen. My team has had conversations with Marvel about some aspect of the MCU for years. Do I know this to be true or not? I actually don’t know," the actor said. "I feel like my team doesn’t bring me something unless it’s real. So I don’t know. I could be in conversation, but I’m not sure. I would welcome a conversation around it."
"Whatever they’re working out with Jonathan [Majors] and his legacy in the MCU, I feel like I just have to be in my own lane, whatever that is. There’s hearsay, there’s conversations, but I’m not even sure because I feel like nothing comes to me until something’s real. But I’d be down with it."
If Domingo does play Kang, it sounds like he'll want to put his own spin on the villain. That's understandable and probably for the best as Marvel Studios looks to move on from the controversy surrounding Majors.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars to follow on May 7, 2027.
