AVENGERS: Colman Domingo Addresses Kang Rumors; "My Team Has Had Conversations With Marvel For Years"

Fear The Walking Dead star Colman Domingo has talked more about the rumours he'll take over the role of Kang from Jonathan Majors, admitting his team has been in contact with Marvel Studios for years.

Marvel Studios finds itself in a major (no pun intended) predicament. After Jonathan Majors was found guilty on one count of intentional assault in the third degree and aggravated harassment in the second degree by a New York jury, his time as Kang the Conqueror swiftly ended.

The studio built an entire saga of storytelling around the actor, introducing him as He Who Remains in Loki before putting a Kang Variant front and centre in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. He returned as Victor Timely in Loki season 2 and, from there, we expected to see a lot more of him heading into the next Avengers movies.

Last year, a rumour found its way online suggesting Fear the Walking Dead star Colman Domingo is the frontrunner to replace Majors as Kang in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Domingo has commented on the rumours but spoke in greater detail during a newly published Vanity Fair profile.

"I know what you’re going to ask. You’re going to talk about the MCU," he initially responded. "It’s funny how people are online talking about this. And the moment it started happening, literally, I think I was on my couch. And I was like, 'What rumor? Who? Where’s this coming from?' I just didn’t think about it. The next day I woke up, it’s everywhere."

The site then asked if there's any truth to the claims he'll become the Multiverse Saga's new Kang. Domingo confirmed there have been talks with Marvel Studios "for years," only to stop short of confirming or denying whether he'll take over the role from Majors.

"You know, listen. My team has had conversations with Marvel about some aspect of the MCU for years. Do I know this to be true or not? I actually don’t know," the actor said. "I feel like my team doesn’t bring me something unless it’s real. So I don’t know. I could be in conversation, but I’m not sure. I would welcome a conversation around it."

"Whatever they’re working out with Jonathan [Majors] and his legacy in the MCU, I feel like I just have to be in my own lane, whatever that is. There’s hearsay, there’s conversations, but I’m not even sure because I feel like nothing comes to me until something’s real. But I’d be down with it."

If Domingo does play Kang, it sounds like he'll want to put his own spin on the villain. That's understandable and probably for the best as Marvel Studios looks to move on from the controversy surrounding Majors.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars to follow on May 7, 2027.

Am a DC guy, but I love and have mad respect for MCU from the very start (I think I've been through 7 girlfriends and one failed marriage since :D ). However, I am not looking forward to anymore films or shows after the sudden shift after End Game. Makes me sad.

@bobevanz - So Marvel Studios is being restructured. Could be good or worse.

@lazlodaytona - similar track record. One divorce, three girlfriends and one wife and child! Where has the time gone?

Still engaged on the MCU but my interest has waned. I would be at most films opening night. Since endgame, it’s been every third movie

@EskimoJ - well it is. Just because we also explain it with the drive for DEI doesn't suddenly make us not liking it toxic. Ffs, if these shows and movies were good, there might actually be an argument for DEI to be good business.

Have the Kang sh1t die offscreen by some other villain and just move on as Ant man did. You don't even have to address it in the films. The character has had enough chances to wow us and none has worked.

I know this conversation will inevitably turn into "why does he have to be black" but as I've said a million times here, for better or worse, the easiest, lowest common denominator appeasing solution is to keep the character close in looks to what has been established on the screen so far.

As I said somewhere else, we're talking about people who can't wrap their mind around the fact that "The Batman" and "Joker" are their own things.

Want to be mad that they are probably going to keep Kang black? Be mad at how truly dumb the lowest common denominator of the general audience truly is.

@SATW42 - literally nobody gives af about that

@SATW42 - I think the reason is because it was an intentional race swap and proves that Majors wasn’t chosen simply because “he was the best actor for the job”. People are sick of “teh message”

@SATW42 - I don't think it's that they're dumb. It's just that they don't care. And you can't really blame them.

@JustAWaffle - I'm kinda hoping he mentions something about the case. I know it can be kinda tasteless, but it's an r rated movie about a meta superhero. It makes sense.

I know I'm probably 20 articles too late in saying this, but IMO Majors as Kang was way overrated. He LOOKED cool in Quantummania with the comic-accurate suit, but his acting just didn't sell me on his major villain stature, and his Victor Timely character was f***ing annoying lol. I watched Coleman Domingo in Fear The Walking Dead and think he's a great actor but don't really see him as Kang either. I liked the idea of replacing Kang with John David Washington though, he was cool in The Creator.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/21/2024, 9:56 AM
Hopefully it does happen because I feel he has the necessary gravitas to play the “prime” version of Kang in the MCU and the overarching villain of the current saga…

However given the rumors of them looking also at other actors around the same age as Majors such as John David Washington for the role aswell , I wouldn’t be surprised if they are having a bunch of conversations with agents to see if their clients would be interested or not.

Granted , these could all be B.S also which with scoopers is also a possibility.

I still think Kang would be done well by Denzel Washington. You can explain the age up by saying he’s been stuck in the bottom of the Quantum Realm and after century’s he’s escaped, or after being stuck in a timeline where he’s already killed the Avengers to steal Starks time travel device and now he’s come for the 616 because that’s where the Ant family who trapped him on another dimension is located.
Point being, Denzel would make a great Conquerer.

Maybe don't join the collapsing franchise in a decline of interest in superheroes playing a role the audience are not connected to that was formerly played by an abuser of women?

Honestly, a lot of the films that have been announced in general sound like they are going to be disasters and this year is really lacking.

This year? Probably Sonic 3 as the most hyped and a slight interest in Horizon: An American Saga.

Long-term? Mission Impossible 8, Kingsman: The Blue Blood, Fast XI, Top Gun 3, The Wandering Earth 3, The Backrooms
